We named our puppy "Sammi" (she's a girl) b/c my husband wanted a dog the size of a sandwich! He'd hold up what he would pretend would be a puppy, and then take a bite out of it because "it'll be so scrumptious!" So, she became Sammi, actually long before we had even picked her out.
There's no right answer, but just think of how you refer to the puppy now, and how you imagine him. It doesn't have to be serious or even a "real" name.
Good luck! Pups are great! But, tiring!!

My ex always liked the name BJ, well .... for obvious reasons ....

Pup Dawg
You can name him after my childhood dog who was a mutt but was very much like a JRT. Pup Dawg (I am southern) would take on any dog in the neighborhood even though he was pretty small. He had lots of attitiude.

I can't have a dog right now but we're moving later this year and I'm getting 2 dachshunds. I'll name them for my favorite characters:
Mr. Darcy
Captain Jack
Even if I get female dogs, that'll be their names. =)

8:07pm-
Funny you should ask. "Bridget Jones' Diary" was loosely based on P & P. Helen Fielding somewhat based Mark Darcy on Colin Firth's representation of Mr. Darcy in A & E's version of P & P. And wouldn't you know it, Colin gets cast to play Mark Darcy, 2 different representations of the same character. Liked Bridget Jones, loved P & P. So my pup gets named after the original Fitzwilliam Darcy. (yes, JA nerd here)
