IS IT THE GYM OR A MEAT MARKET

Ever notice some of the women who go to work out have spent time fixing their hair, have put on all their makeup, and wear outfits that can't possibly support themselves for cardio?

Their butts are squeezed so tight into their spandex that you are sure they must be going comando!

Now on the man side, I don't see the same flaunt. Sure some choose to wear T-shirts as oposed to muscle shirts, but I don't see their outfits as revealing. Men seem to show off with how much they can lift, or how many chinups and push ups they can do at once.

Who are these spandex bound women trying to catch? Do the men really notice them while they work out?

Do these women think the gym is the MEAT MARKET?

Soooo it used to really bother me but then I realized that maybe these women feel better about THEMSELVES that way, so then they are more motivated. And in that case, go them, wear whatever.

I agree though, I do secretly make fun of some of the outfits (and dangly earrings?!) that women sometimes choose. However, as for makeup, I dont bother to wash mine off before a workout so (eek!) I might be one of "those" too. :)

What you see and what they see about their bodies is probably different. I agree with the PP that it's motivating to "go for the burn" if you are on the elliptical or treadmill in front of the mirror and looking with horror at your own saddlebags in spandex!

Well, I figure they're raising an eyebrow at me in my soccer shorts, loose t-shirt and messy ponytail and wondering why I don't take more pride in my appearance. If it makes them happy and gives them the self-confidence to work out then that's what works for them. It's all good and I don't need to judge anyone on appearances - I'm just there to work out.

Reminds me of the horrible tiny girl in my college gym who used to work out sans bra (I know she was was pretty small up top, but still!), and wearing a pearl necklace. Pearls? When working out? Gross.

But I wonder if some workout pants aren't meant to be worn commando? Mine all have little cotton triangles in the crotch, and it makes me curious. Anyone else have this and skip underwear? I hate going through two pair of underwear every day when I change after the gym, but I'm hesitant to go this route ...

I wear my soccer shorts and soccer jersey to work out it. I don't wear makeup, and put my hear up in a messy ponytail too. I'm not there to look good, I'm not there to impress anyone but myself.

I have many guy friends at the gym and they usually have a good chuckle at the expense of the women that wear makeup, jewellry etc... (obviously not in front of them)

But I agree that these woman may feel that in order to have self confidence, you must wear makeup and skimpy or tight outfits....or they just want to wear them...so ignore them and take the attention that you'd be paying to them and put it back into your workout where it belongs!

I saw a woman jogging on the treadmill in front of me wearing the cutoff sweat shorts - she was in good shape only problem was .... she had a hole right in the seam of the butt, and well, it was apparent that she was wearing a thong. How can you not stare at something like that ???

Just be glad she wasn't going comando!

OP here -
Interesting thoughts. Most of the time I can stay focused on my own workout. They (the peacocks) tend to not want to sweat like I do...they have their own section of the gym.

BUT I CAN SMELL THEIR PERFUME NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE!

There is one girl who use to have a similar esercise schedule as me. She didn't dress like a peacock, but she smelled like he perfume bottle. I had to change machines or my asthma would start.

Then there is the smelly guy issue. I am not talking smelly pits, I am talking smelly guy who needed a shower YESTERDAY! If the fans are pointed the wrong way I want to gag!

I also find that some, not all, of those who do the whole makeup/hair/cutesy outfit thing tend to be the same ones who merely walk on the treadmill, then wander aimlessly around the weights. Usually naturally skinny and don't necessarily need to work out, and I'm sure are the same ones who go "Oh, I'm so fat!" so that everyone will tell them they're crazy to think that way! I don't mind someone wearing a sporty, possibly body revealing outfit if they've got the goods to back it up. I wish I could wear a sports bra only in the light of day! But there is definitely a crew that wears that stuff simply to be seen, and nary a drop of perspiration leaves their bodies while they're there. Save it for Saturday night!!!!

Male here.

Ever consider that the perfume and makeup is a result of the fact they just left the office?

I find nothing wrong with eye candy when I am working out. I would rather meet a woman at the gym than at a bar any day. Says something for what they stand for.

Don't get jealous, get even.

I used to wear the baggy shorts and oversized T to workout in - as I started to lose a few lbs. I would wear more tanks, and now that i have some muscle I wear less baggy shorts.
When i go with boyfriend i do try to look slightly "cuter", when I am flying solo I will throw on the pit-stained baggy T.
Something I have noticed though - the baggy clothes are now more cumbersome and hotter/stickier than a tank w/ regular shorts.

PP I agree with you. Baggy clothes are just uncomfortable and hot to work out in. I tend to wear cotton capris/pants/shorts with a pretty tight T or tank top. I do have make up on because I'm coming straight from work. Why go home first to take it off??

I do see the difference though of people that get dolled up to go to the gym, I don't do that!

I have to say the "peacocks" are hilarious. I just can't figure out how they can be on the elliptical for 45 minutes and never break a sweat. Or how about the girls on the tread mill that don't go faster than a crawl, how are they that skinny?

"Do the men really notice them while they work out?"

another male,

ha ha this is a funny thread!
The gym is mainly for working out but really it is a chance for many people to be seen in their physique awesomeness which is why it is so funny to talk about the makup, perfume, spandex set. Yuck, that isn't hot. Ponytail , basic workout clothes and good effort, that will make the guys lift bigger weights b/c you are there (if you are pretty). I am sure there is some university study where guys work out 20% harder when there is a cute girl there. (lookism huh?) Yes we are watching, but those ones OP is talking about are repellant. ha ha.

;)

yuck! why do you guys have to watch? and do you really get on the elliptical behind the girl with the nice bum so that you'll do more cardio? i've always wondered if that is true

I HAVE to share this story - perfect for this post.
At my last gym, which was a total meat market, there was a small group of guys who were ALWAYS there - one of them worked there as a personal trainer so I get that, but the rest of them seriously could not have worked because no matter what time of day/day of the week I went, there they were, grunting, checking out their muscles in the mirror, etc..
Anyways, one day one of them walked up to the girl (peacock) on the eliptical next to me and they were apparently going on a dinner date in a day or two Here is their conversation:
Meathead: "So, what do you like?"
Peacock: "I dont know, I like vegetables"
MH: "Yeah, I like vegetable too. Do you like protein"
PC: "yea, I like protein"

I almost fell off my machine laughing. I am all for a healthy lifestyle, but that was seriously overboard.

Geez, I didn't mean like "watch". I meant more like notice, that is all, like hmmm there seems to be cute girl in here... and then you just workout harder just because that is how guys work and maybe discreetly glance over to check her out a little once in a while.
As to your question, no, I have never heard any guy say that he does that and I don't do that, that is just creepy.

That is funny 5:26, I guess those two have their top criteria all straightened out huh?

I never would have imagined that others could be offended by my workout "attire"! I always come from work, and don't bother to wash of my makeup. If I am in a hurry, then I might not take off my earrings.

I also prefer to wear fitted clothes and usually go commando. For me its not me flaunting what I have (because obviously I am at the gym to improve it), its about comfort. I find that if I wear baggy clothes it irritates my skin when I am running on the treadmill. And most workout tanks have additional build in support, which I like on top of my sports bra.

So please don't be so quick to judge others. Wear what makes you feel your best at the gym.

Women and men always perceive such things differently. It is important for me to look beautiful even in the gym. But make-up is, of course, superfluous, since I work up to active sweat on simulators. My husband treats his appearance much easier, but he has a fad. It is important for him that his underwear is comfortable. He usually buys stylish things here, go to this site He says the classic bamboo boxers are made for athletic training. But otherwise he can wear an old T-shirt and shorts from the garage)
