ok, here ya go:

My husband and I have a combined income of $120,000 per year. I make more money than him for the simple fact that I drive 35 miles one way to work. We live in a small town and jobs in my field are limited or pays dick. My husband drives 7 miles to work and makes good money considering he doesn't have to drive to the cities for work.

Doubt that makes you happy..

Why is the question offensive? We're all anonymous on this site, aren't we?

I don't work. My husband makes $138,000 plus bonuses, which have been as much as $50,000 or as little as $12,000. It's great money for where we live. Cost of living is low in our area.

It's all anonymous, it's not like asking your group or team members how much they make.

I live in an relatively expensive area on the east coast (as compared to the midwest.) I think our salary would be considered good no matter where we lived - although owning a home in somewhere like NYC or San Francisco (maintaining our current standard of living and savings goals) would change our perspective on that, I think.

My hubby makes 36k, I work from home and add about 12k. Cost of living is low (so I have been told) Our house cost us 88k. Median sales for our area are about 90k. The major industry in the county is agriculture. If the taxes in NYS weren't so high it would be a perfect place to live.

It is hard to off set the cost of groceries these days. Gas prices go up, we just don't "go" as much, but how do you not eat as much?

We never have a lot of extra resources, but we always seem to manage. We still find ways to take family vacations, but we drive new "used" vehicles and try to avoid debt all together.

Our total family deb t(INCLUDING CREDIT CARDS) is 94k.

It is interesting to consider how much/little other people earn with respect to their geographic area.

ALSO...the cost of a home varies so much. That really drives how much you must earn in an area. Y'all should sell up and move to cow country. Imagine what kind of house you could buy! Only problem is you'd have to start driving tractors for a living!!!!!! !LOL

Some singers would say a tractor makes you look sexy!

I live just outside of Albany and I teach high school English- this is my 9th year and I make 53,000. My husband works for the highway department and he makes about 65,000 a year. I can't complain because I have summers off plus all the other vacations- I only work 180 days a year and I'm home by 3:00.
My husband is also home by 3:00 which is nice because we have lots of family time with our kids. We go on a few vacations a year, own a timeshare, two fairly new SUVs and our own home. We don't have credit cards- if we can't pay cash we don't get it. We save for what we want and don't live above our means.

I make 60k and I have no idea what my husband makes! I should ask him. He does all our finances, so I don't even think about it. For the area we live in, we don't make that much, but for our ages (mid-late 20's), we do. We live in the North East in a very wealthy community. We live in a one-bedroom apartment, one car, no kids.

Well - I initially opened this to add MYOB, but had to admit it was fascinating.

location: PacNW
me: engineer w/3.5 yrs exp, $65K
husband: programmer w/6 years exp, $110K

We're comfortable, but not getting rich by any means. We've mostly paid off student debt by now and just bought the cheapest fixer-upper in the neighborhood for $425K, but 50% of the houses within a 10 mile radius cost more than 800K (and house prices ain't dropping much here), so it doesn't take long to go through the ole' paycheck. And don't even get me started on gas, groceries and taxes. Cracks me up that all of our midwest relatives think we're out here on the coast living like kings.

LIve in upstate NY. Both teachers. combined income about 100K. Avg. home price about 250K. Ours is valued at about 350K. Three teenage kids. One going to college soon.

We own a rental property, and it's operating in the black, barely.

Debt is about 250K on both houses.

We are feeling the squeeze. Bushe's tax 'rebate' is going right into the gas tank and from there into the pockets of the oil companies. Some help. I wince at school field trips we have to shell out for, etc. But again, we're not poverty stricken. No trips etc. My consolation is that I'm taking a journey myself toward better health and well--being by losing weight. That's why I'm here.

So, i'll plug a team I've started, and of which I'm still the only member, called "Diet Write". Check it out. At least leave a message, huh?

Be strong tomorrow.

Husband: G-man, mgr level, about 60K
Me: Substitute teacher, about $700-800/mo during school year, but until 18 months ago I was a SAHM (back to work when youngest went to 1st, out of need for productivity more than need for income)
Total debt excluding house: less than 5K and dropping rapidly; will be long gone by end of year
Income ratio: Probably on the low end for professional college-educated people, but better than a lot of the service-oriented jobs here.
Houses mostly cost in excess of $200K, and many are well over the half-million mark (we live in a resort area). Ours cost $140K seven years ago and has doubled through appreciation since our purchase.
Vacations--camping. Our kids don't go to camps other than Scout Camp and aren't in private lessons, classes, or clubs. Eating out as a family is a rarity, mayby once a year. Movies as a family, less than that. Thankfully, after nearly two decades I can cook from scratch almost on autopilot, so my going back to work didn't result in an increase in our food budget due to more convenience foods. I bake bread. We grow a garden. We drive used cars. I bike when I can and pull groceries in a trailer. We have a few toys but they are all old, used, cheap things except for my kayak, which was an amazing bit of generosity on my husband's part. We upgraded our TV three years ago--to a 26-inch (the old one was a 13-inch). Most of our furniture is used (slowly changing). I bottle food; Brett has done all the remodeling to our house himself, teaching himself masonry and various other skills along the way.

We're frugal in most areas, but we do have a few leaks. :^ ) Also 4 kids aged 19 to 8. And a subculture that encourages and teaches self-reliance, debt-freedom, careful management of resources, etc. We tithe. We save for retirement.

We are currently trying to pass on some management skills to our eldest son. He knows it all in his head, but he can't seem to practice it.

Annual income - so far for the year will be $115K (I'm in sales so I still have 5 months to make more in commission)
The majority of houses in my area are approaching the Million dollar mark, and that salary is going to have to seriously go up if I'm going to get my dream closet.

Upper Midwest

Been disabled since 2002 -- applied for social security disability & denied, appeal denied, currently appealing the determination of the appeal.

Living most frugally on $290.00 a month from a retirement annuity (thankfully I had the sense to participate when I was employed, but because I'm nowhere near retirement age there's not enough accumulation to make a really livable monthly amount).

No phone, no tv, no stereo, no a/c, very little heat in the winter (which can run over $400.00 a month if thermostat is set to anything above 62).

Rent is subsidized at 30% of income, with an energy allowance deducted & I have general assistance medical coverage. I also get a lot of fresh organic produce for free from the weekend farmer's market (on Sunday evening they give away whatever didn't sell). I also get free high speed internet because I live a block from the library and can access it's bandwidth by using the computer near the window (laptop computer with wifi given to me by a freecycle member).

These are my expenses:

45.00 rent
28.00 electric (lights, fridge, cooking, hot water, computer)
130.00 food, household necessities & hygiene items
8.00 quarters for laundry
6.00 prescription co-pays (2 scrips, $3.00 each)
15.00 vitamins & OTC meds
20.00 gas for the car (dr. appts, physical therapy, grocery shopping, library)
30.00 auto insurance (minimal coverage)
8.00 miscellaneous pocket money

My boyfriend and I live in San Francisco--median house price seems around $800k. I make $15k a year while attending graduate school and he makes about $175k a year so we have a lovely little apartment. It may be tight, but I guess we choose the city living over the large house. We talk about moving to a cheaper area and buying a house but at our age and minus any children this just seems right.

My two cents: I don't think it matters what you actually make, as long as you are happy and content with what you can afford.

My boyfriend and I teach English in South Korea, each of us making around $34,000 a year after taxes (many people make double that by teaching under the table). Like most 1year contracts for SK they pay airfare there and back; and cover housing:small apartment by North American standards - but good enough for us; pay 50% health care (which is ridiculously cheap by our standards anyways); and 50% pension plan (which you can get 100% back when you leave).
Cost of living is pretty low depending on what you like to do (some people drink, shop and party away all their money)- food and transportation are relatively cheap.
It's been a great way to save a lot of money. My bf came home with $26,000 and I paid off almost all of my University debt - and this is after we took a vacation in North Korea, the Philippines, and Seattle on our way home.

$98k - husband, Last year for me was NEGATIVE $20k after daycare expenses (Real Esate was my job). Now I am a SAHM temporarily and we have moved to a new city - Des Moines. Housing is average here and the standards that people live to (clothing, cars, extra activities, etc.) is lower than our last city. A very nice, relaxed atmosphere.

I will be switching careers when my 3 year old is back in kindergarten to software engineering. I do have an engineering degree and that was much more lucrative for me than real estate was after expenses!

Home is only $120,000, which is slightly above the median around here. While it doesn't sound like much, it is an absolutely gorgeous 1920's updated house in the trendiest neighborhood in town. I'm amazed when I watch HGTV and see houses in California that are comparable to ours (3 bed 2 bath 2,000sq ft) that are $400,000 plus. It's crazy how much the prices differ around the country.

If you're sick of being strapped for cash, move to the Midwest. It isn't so bad here, and your money will go a lot further.

I think it's less about money or lifestyle, 7:41... I think it's more about mindset and where one finds happiness! I know people who make a lot of money but are never satisfied b/c they're caught up in those who have more, and they actually live paycheck to paycheck b/c they're STILL living beyond their means trying to keep up! And I know people who make a respectable living and live simply and they are so much more satisfied and 'rich' than those caught up in things and money (and they have a buttload of savings to boot!)

Money is a funny subject. Lots of interest in how much other people make, not a lot of interest in how people make money. If someone made more money than me, I'd want to know how they did it.

It does make the world go round. It also makes you feel wasteful or smug about yourself, depending on how well you do against others.

Re

My husband and I make a combined income of 120K.
We live in Toronto, Canada, which is a pretty expensive city

I wanted to say about Canada. Yes, Toronto is quite an expensive city, but you have to consider that it is a capital and a metropolis. There are also many more career opportunities here. Sometimes it really doesn't make sense to plan on buying a home. I have friends who just rent comfortable apartments near work. You can contact them. There are quality improvements in terms of rental policy now. Companies often make concessions and lower the rental price while the mortgage price remains the same.
