Do nuts give you energy?

I'm eating a huge bag of pistachios leftover from the holidays. Is this a good idea before a workout?

Well...I wouldn't recommend eating a huge bag of any kind of nut and I'm not sure how effective they are at giving energy before a workout but my doctor advised me to eat 7-8 almonds in the afternoon if I ever hit a slump. I usually only need about 5 to perk me up.

Nuts DO give you energy but even though they have some good nutritional value you have to watch out because they are fatty little suckers too! :o)

A serving of nuts is generally somewhere between 12 and 20 nuts, and is usually just under 200 calories. Just keep this in mind. They're great for nutrition and energy, but stick to a serving or a half serving and make sure to count them in your calorie total for the day!

for the record. I'm back from my workout and they did not seem to give me the boost I needed.

Not sure if you did this or not, but right after you eat, you need to give your body time to digest before you work out. In addition to avoiding feeling kind of sick if you work too hard on a full stomach, while your body is digesting it's actually using a lot of energy, and doesn't really have reserves left over to push you through a workout (think of how tired you are after a big meal, just scale it back). For an energy boost, you need to eat probably a half an hour or more before you work out, to give your body time to digest and get you energy.

Nuts for the most part are very low in carbohydrates, but high in fats (good fats) and protein. If you want "energy" quickly you need something with carbohydrates in it, but the protein and fats will help sustain you over a longer period of time. This is why combining bread and peanut butter is such a popular combination, you get short and long term energy.
