Not to be gruesome in the first post, but my mother in law died of it. She had a history of heart disease in her family, and was a smoker for many years. I'd be glad to share our experience with it, but don't want to TMI unnecessarily.

a complex ailment

As an RN in the ER, I would suggest a browsing the internet for articles that summarize the illness. Damaged lung tissue and lack of elasticity will promote frequent bouts with pneumonia, and decrease oxygenation to the lungs. This in turn results in frequent use of antibiotics and steroids. Those both have less than pleasant side effects. SMOKING MUST BE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY.

This is a chronic disease, so I would think of it like I would diabetes. Not a death sentence but a huge change in lifestyle requiring patience, diligence and special attention to strengthening the body as much as possible so that frequent health setbacks will be better tolerated. Fevers need to be addressed immediately since pneumonia overall has an 85% mortality rate in senior citizens. Of course I have no idea the age of the person involved.
Sorry for this complication in this persons life:(
