Is a college class ring worth the money?

I'm *finally* graduating with my B.S. Family members have offered to by my class ring, which is appreciated - they know how much I have wanted one. It's just that we're talking $500-900! A hell of a lot of money. I don't want to regret it later, and it would be such a symbol of hard work - 10 years and 2 kids later - that I really do want it. Just wondering if others out there have opinions of this. Thanks for all feedback!

You can always think it over and order later. If you go to any college ring website, they will let you choose years to go on the ring that are several years before and several years after what would be considered "current."
I can tell you that I chose not to have one. However, I must congratulate you on finishing after facing so many challenges. Good for you!
You should think about it, and the previous poster is right- most places tend to be overpriced. What I plan on doing when I finish my other degree is to get a "right-hand" diamond, so I'm starting to save now. :)
You can also get a pretty locket or pendant inscribed with something to commermorate your accomplishment. Or spend a couple hundred getting your diploma super beautifully framed and spend another couple hundred pampering yourself at a spa.
Good luck, and congrats again!

It sounds like you really want it, so let your family members have the honor of getting it for you. Will you regret it? Who knows. My guess is you'll love it for awhile, but it's not something you'll wear into adulthood. Doesn't mean you won't still love having it tucked away somewhere and enjoy for sentimental reasons.

I say let them get it for you. You would like it and they want to do it for you to congradulate your accomplishment. Yeah, maybe in a few years you won't wear it anymore, but it can be passed on to a child later on when they are in high school and getting ready for college. Kind of a motivator and sign of hope to help keep them going. I have mine, and I plan on giving it to my kids due to me being the first to graduate college in my family. I don't wear it anymore because I am married and have a more important ring to wear, but I do cherish my class ring.

Forget the ring!
Tell your family you will put that money aside to help your kids go to college.

I have 3 degrees..only got one ring which I never wore. Everyone is different but for me, after the other graduations, I took a trip instead. You'll always have Paris:)

Have a docorate and never got a ring.....and I have to say I don't miss it. Many of my friends have advanced degrees and none of them wear rings either.

Yeah, I agree with PP...put the money in a college fund for your kids. Or make a contirbution toward something else you really care about. A ring is just a form of advertisement for the school you went to.

I personally think you should do a makeover & shopping spree to start you out into the working world. Not sure of where you will be working, but you will need a nice suit for interviews, maybe a laptop,briefcase...that is a lot of money for a ring that you are not even comfortable accepting.

I went through the same thing, 2 back surgeries, 1 wedding, 1 child & finally I received my degree. Seeing my family at my graduation, going out to dinner afterwards & then having a party a month later was enough for me. I will never forget walking out & looking up to see my son, hubby, parents & best friends there for me. Being there was more than I could have ever asked for.

Get it if you want it and pick one you like.

My parents wanted to buy me my college class ring when I graduated.... I got a ring that was petite and wore it non stop the year after I graduated. I don't wear any rings now but it's so darn cute then when I go out and am wearing gold, it's the first ring that goes on my finger. When people compliment on it's cuteness they don't even realize its a class ring until I point it out.
Pick a ring you like and that you'll want to wear. Even if you don't wear it, its a nice reminder of how hard you worked to get the degree.

I'm in the minority here, but I graduated 6 years ago and have worn mine every day since then. I hated my high school ring and wanted to get a college ring that was timeless and simple. I actually got the most inexpensive "model" available (about $150) - silver, small and feminine, no stone, simple engraving - and wear it on my right hand.

I agree with previous posters that it IS a lot of $$ and if you're not going to get good use out of it, the $$ is better spent on something else.

No, no, no!!!! You'll never wear it after a year or so. Unless you're into momentos and staring out it when you pull open your jewelry box, don't do it!

Didn't you learn in college that $900 compounded over time is a lot of dough? Invest it.
Then ten years down the road if you still want it get it.

OP here -

Thank you all for the comments! I did decide to get the ring, but went against the 'traditional' model and got a simple but BEAUTIFUL ring with a the engraving on the inside. This way, I can wear it every day w/o advertising for the school! Thanks again, much appreciated!

OP again -

Just wanted to add that the family was against giving money (otherwise I would've taken that route), so it was ring or nothing!

I'd say no. I have 2 degree's and I got a ring for the first one....yeah, I have no clue where it is...it was such a waste of money.
