Pre/Post Workout Snacks

Ok so normally if I don't head to the gym right after work (lately that has been about 5pm) I don't workout.

So I've been trying to go right after work. Heres the problem if I don't eat before I workout (normally I have an apple around 2 or 3) I am so hungry afterwards that when I get home I can't wait for dinner and I'm stuffing my face. There have been times where I've eaten before working out (about 45 minutes) and I get a really bad sick feeling and can't get a good workout in.
So I figure eat something healthy right after my workout that will tide me over til dinner.

But what is best pre/post workout?

I also tried a whey protein shake (about 110 calories) before my workout once and that killed me stomach and made me vomit soon after I finished working out. (Even though I thought it was pretty good).

MAN I totally hear you!
try every day bringing a 1/4 cup of inst. oatmeal in a baggie with some raisins in it (douse it with that hot water in a coffee cup) and eat that 30 mins before the workout before you leave work
good energy - no pukin' - and cheap!

after the workout have that protein shake (or a few pieces of beef jerky) to aid in muscle repair

AND YOU are SET

i have never heard of soy making people sick - is this common? Dairy makes me sick so soy is my alternative.

Soy makes some people sick - like me (a guy) - maybe the estrogen component

I like Cliff Bloks. Just suck on one as you start to crash and it usually does the job. I never get sick from them. They are pure carb but they keep you from bonking.

I am a woman, and soy makes me sick. i actually found a article on line that talks about how it causes stomach pain because our bodies have a hard time digesting the proteins in them.

Your whey shake needs adjustment to it if it made you sick....how did you drink it?
I also go to the gym right after work.
Pre work out, I have my shake which has frozen strawberries, and 1 small banana, along with 4 ounces of fat free soy milk, 4 ounces of water and a tbsp flax meal ground. I blend all this in the blender so its like a smoothie. Even try peanut butter! The fruit gives you a burst of energy, and I start drinking it 1 and a half hours before i am at the gym, this way its not sitting in my stomach so I can run. Another good pre snack is cliff bars. Awesome energy, and lots of protein. The oatmeal works too.
After the gym in the car, I'll have a protein cookie or an apple, and of course make dinner when I get home.
Protien Cookies:
1/2c quick oats
3 egg whites
1 whole egg
1 scoop protein powder
cinnamon
walnuts
1 mashed banana (the more ripe, the easier to mash)
Mix all ingredients, spray pam on pan, put a cookie sized amount on pan, cook both sides until cooked, (medium heat, about 2-3 mins each side)
Dont like bananas? Dice an apple up, dont like walnuts? Use chopped almonds. These are awesome for you. But please, dont work out starving, you will have no energy. Pack your gym bag with 5 cliff bars, you'll always have them within reach while at the gym!

those protein cookies sound awesome! I know it is hard since they are homemade but before I started researching and adding do you happen to know what their cal content is/serving (and what u consider a serving)?

Thankfully soy is not an allergen for me. I love Luna bars.

Personally, I have to workout on an empty stomach. I drink too much or eat before a workout and my stomach rolls all throughout the workout.

If you're stuffing your face before your dinner/can't wait for dinner, then have that shake immediately after your workout, then it should help tide you over til you get home and make dinner. I'd just make sure I have something in my gym bag to munch on after the workout.

I use EAS shakes - Myoplex and Advantedge. They aren't too high on calories, and give me the energy I need to have a good workout since I go after working 9 hours but before dinner.
