Baked Bean Lover Here

I've loved baked beans all my life. Now that I'm getting more health aware, I'm always suprised by the fat and calorie content in cans of baked beans, even the vegetarian varities (good bye pork fat).
What is it in baked beans that drives the caloric and fat content? Is it the sauce or are beans themselves naturally high in calories and fat? I've tried google-ing it, but found a bit of contradictory information.

Are there any baked bean lovers out there who might know of a brand or home preperation technique that helps on the calories and fat content?

Gotta love the protein at least!!!!!

I would try going to cooking light.com for a recipe. They convert just about any recipe to reduce fat and calories

I love a version of baked beans from the UK called "Heinz 57" (I guess this is also a sauce in the US). They have much less sugar and calories than the american version.

Trader Joe's Organic Baked Beans are only 140 cal per 1/2 cup and is apparently fat free.
