Sleep

I have some trouble falling asleep at times. I was wondering if anyone has any 'tricks' to fall asleep, clear your minds. I always have thoughts wizzing though my head.

Thanks!

Keep a pen and paper by your bedside and jot down all the things that you're thinking about. This helped me a lot.

Try buying a book on tape, I tend to used Harry Potter, and listen to it as you fall asleep. The conflicts in the book distract you from your own and are easier to ignore.
Good Luck!

I just make up a pretend fantasy. I'm rich, I'm dating Justin Timberlake... whatever. It's like telling yourself a story in your head.

Melatonin tablets (the body's sleep hormone) - take 15 minutes before you want to fall asleep. Works for most people.

If you sleep alone, get ANY self-hypnosis recording (weight loss, self-esteem, etc). They start with about 5 minutes of calming breath exercises and knock me out before they get to the good stuff.

Herbal tea...something like camille or a floral mixture. Make sure to turn off your TV and computer about a half hour before you go to bed....this will help your mind relax and you will fall asleep easier.

'Thought Beetles' is what a friend used to call them and I get them too. I concentrate on clearing my mind (this takes some practice and discipline to to when you're trying to let your mind drift off to sleep) and I do the breathing that we do at the beginning of pilates class when you are learning how to feel and engage your deep core muscles. I can drop off in 10 minutes now and it used to take me at least an hour.

Also, no caffine after breakfast, regular exercise, less sugar, don't eat later at night (for me the cut-off is 8:00).

I make sure I'm really relaxed, that my hands are open instead of clenched and that my jaw is relaxed. I also sleep with ear plugs and a mask to block noise and light. Try to go to bed the same time every night, even on the weekends.

BLACK

Learned this one in Karate...
practice controlling your thoughts

Begin by finding a relaxing place and sitting comfortably
relax and think about your slow breathing for a few minutes.
Then try to focus your thoughts on nothing. It is possible but very hard to start. Just begin by only thinking aobut the color black - do that for like 5 seconds, then 10 seconds - very tough at first but over time you can develop the ability to sit quietly and think about absolutely nothing at all for a few minutes. This is extremely helpful in a situation like yours. Try it, but be patient
