Put your Texas heels in a totebag and hoof it in sneakers! You'll burn 100 calories more per mile than you would have sitting behind the wheel. Save on gas, save on a gym membership...you'll just need to buy new sneaks every 3 months :)

And for fun, look around and see if anyone is already doing this. You might be surprised (or you might not...Texas is so truck-crazy!)

OP here..its annoying..my husband started riding his bike to work, but he doesnt live far from work, I have to cross a major street, I really dont care though. I cannot afford the gas...I havent gone to the gym, bc of gas, I have been running outdoors bc of gas so there is no reason why I cannot walk to work bc of gas!!

a comment from another texas gal ... i would LOVE to walk to work. i live about 2 miles from a train station and could walk to that and take the train to work. except here in texas, it gets to be 10,000 degrees so what's a girl to do when she's a sweaty, stinking mess by the time she gets there?

Thats my dilemma also...grrrr!!!! This is so hard...why does it have to be this hard!! I wish that stupid oil guys with all of their billions of dollars would just give it up...before they get killed by us angry americans (and Texans) who cannot afford their stinky gas!!! And scene...

I am altering my hours starting in June to 4 days a week so I can save money. I drive 32 miles one way to work.

I also started hypermiling.

To the girl who was wondering what to do about getting all sweaty: any chance you could join a gym by your office? I ride my bike to work, shower at the gym, and I'm sparkly clean by the time I get to my desk.

I just invested in a bike and it was probably one of the best decisions I've made this year. I suggest you all do the same!

Lucky to Live Close

I'm one of the lucky ones who live within 15 - 20 minutes from my office (don't know how many miles it is). Because my car needed some work, and it's been in the shop for a week, I've had to walk to work. I was amazed that it takes the same amount of time for me to walk my granddaughter to her daycare, and then on to work, as to drive to the daycare, get out of the car, get back in, drive to work, park and walk into the office. Maybe walking takes 5 minutes longer, but not much if any. But, now that my car is out of the shop I have to decide if I will keep up the habit, or fall back into the convenience of having my car handy for errands, etc. But, as I've read, with the price of gas, it should be a no-brainer decision!

Theoretically that sounds wonderful. Alas I would have to walk through some really dicey areas and make it through some nasty (busiest in the city) pedestrian-unfriendly intersections. Since my car gets ~40 mpg I'll keep driving the 2 miles.

There is a new route opening next year that goes through a better area and will have sidewalks, so I may revisit this topic then. I'm thinking about getting a Xooter though for little trips to the store -they look so fun!

I live too far from work to walk (about 25 miles) but sometimes I do take the train. Then, I wear sneakers because I have a 10 minute walk (at a very fast pace) from the train station in the city to my office. I keep a nice pair of black shoes by my desk and I change into them as soon as I get in. This way I save on gas, get some exercise, and feel great.

Bike!

I think it'd be really cool to bike to work. I work about two miles from my house, so biking is going to be perfect for me! They have some really cute bike's on the market right now, too!

Sweaty Before Work

Hi Texas, I live in Indiana but start walking to the train station in the Spring when it warms up. I carry a plastic bag with a two small hand towels, deodorant and baby powder and a clean bra to change into, and freshen up in my office's bathroom. It sounds funky but it really does work, and in the summer it can get as hot here as it does down there. I've lost weight walking those extra 4 miles a day and it really makes you feel good at the end of the day. It's a nice way to get your exercise and save on gas money. At 4 bucks a gal. and climbing, walking and biking are good ways to save money.

Wish I didn't have some seriously scary neighborhoods to go through to get to work. I would totally think about riding my bike on a nice day! Gas is about to hit $4 here in Baltimore. But, I have been carpooling to work for the past year, which has saved a bit on gas.

I've been walking to work off and on for the last year. I work in a place where appearances aren't such a big deal so the heat and all isn't such a big deal.
Anyway, it's been fun going through the seasons and seeing it all as it changes. Also, it's a nice piece of alone time before the day begins.
