If your knees are causing you trouble then:

1. STOP EXERCISING for a week
2. Ice (20 minutes - lots of ice) twice daily and REALLY rest those knees
3. take some anti- inflammatories
4. try to strengthen the leg muscles around the knees to prevent any more damage.
5. then ease back into it.

try swimming or just even walking through a pool
also eliptical can be low impact on the knees

I have had two knee scopes and than a total knee replacement on one knee.

I would highly recommend this book. Total Knee Replacement and Rehabilitation: Knee Owner's Manual. By Danel J. Brugioni and Jeff Falkel 2004
$19.95 www.hunter house.com

Based on my experience, do as much as you can before your knee operation so when you have physical therapy, you are just that much stronger.

I know you said you need to lose weight before you can have the surgery. In the meanwhile, work on your knee and make it stronger.

This is my experience that works for me. Perhaps some can be added to your routine.
I have a hard time getting all the way to the floor for exercises, so I got the bean, which helps me.

On the bed, I do leg lifts, work with resistence (spelling) bands.
I also work with a ball that I squeeze with my knees.
I have a bosu ball which I work my knees and also helps me on my balance.

I do suggest swimming or water exercises. Stay away from the frog kick, that is not good.

Biking helps. For me, I had to raise the seat so my knee did not bend to much and it works well for me.

If you cannot get on the exercise bike or regular bike, for a while I had to sit on a chair behind my exercise bike and reach for the pedals while holding on to the seat of the bike.

I have done lots of research on knees, and the above mentioned book I found a year after my knee surgery. I however highly recommend it, because it talks about exercises and what to expect for your knee, before, doing and up to a year after your knee replacement.

Maybe your library has it. But I also put a link to the site where you can purchase the book and the media mail was free. Therefore only $19.95 total.

Icing helps.

Best to you as you lose the weight so you can have that knee operation and be even healthier, stronger and a more active lifestyle.
