new measles outbreak

Apparently because visitors of the UK, other parts of europe and israel are passing on the vaccinations, there is a measles outbreak in the US, unprecedented since 1998. I've seen the pictures of the kids, it is awful. Get the MMR shot if you haven't. This has been a PSA.

Can you provide an article or something about this? I find this interesting because I am going in for a refresher MMR shot in prep for grad school. Is this a new strain of measles? Thanks, OP!

I wouldn't blame it on people from other countries -- the NYT ran an article about people refusing vaccinations recently, and the worst offenders were from California. One woman quoted was adamantly stupid, too, along the lines of "I don't have to vaccinate MY child because you all are vaccinating yours and I love my child more than you love yours."

The only people to blame are people choosing not to get vaccinated. Thats why there are vaccines, a lot of people believe they are not worth the risk but if you think about it they are. An outbreak of something that can be prevented could spread and be deadly. Imagine if people started choosing not to be vaccinated for polio? I am 39 and the only thing I never get vaccinated for is with the flu shot. I never have and I've never had the flu. I know tons of people who get the shot every year and every year they get the flu, usually within a few weeks of getting the shot, go figure, I have a whole conspiracy theory about that. The vaccines they even give for the flu shot is last years flu, it doesn't really protect you from what is going around now, it might soften the duration of time you are sick and how sick you get but it doesn't prevent it. Although with my daughter starting preschool this fall I am actually thinking about it.
