Pilates Figure...

Does pilates really work like i've heard? i'm thinking about taking a class and want to know if there are really big benefits.

Pilates is great! Like anything, consistency is key. So you have to do it 3-4 times a week. But the results are worth it! I owe my increasingly flat stomach to Pilates. There are also some standing Pilates routines that I do for my lower body and they work great! So take a class or 2, focus on your form and breathing, and then keep at it. The results will come!

After taking a few lessons can you do it on your own without an instructor/too many dvds etc?

Yup! I even bought a book that provides several different routines. It's called Your Ultimate Pilates Body Challenge by Brooke Siler. She owns one of the most famous Pilates studios in NYC...I like the book and have had it for about 2 years. I mix up the routines, add in some push-ups, some other ab moves. Before I know it, 45 minutes have passed and I have worked up a sweat!

How do you know if you are doing it the right way? I've tried pilates and it didn't seem like anything was happening. Just felt like stretching. Am I doing something wrong? I didn't even sweat.

Pilates is not aerobic, so the number of calories you burn in an hour isn't much more than you use sitting at your computer and logging on Peertrainer. So no, you won't sweat - it's just not that kind of workout.
