Actually, much of the things I'd recommend to get ready to pregnancy I'd recommend to almost anyone on this site! Some of the most important things are eating healthfully and exercising at an appropriate level.

- I would highly recommend eating more organic foods.
- Think more about balancing the vitamins and nutrients you need - and try to get a lot of those from food in addition to prenatal vitamins or multivitamins
- Having an exercise regimen that you keep well into your pregnancy will help your body be in better shape to go through delivery, but will also help you recover more quickly. However, you shouldn't really try lots of new things once you already are pregnant, so setting up patterns now is great! Walking, yoga, recumbent bikes, or lots of other things...
- Watch out for pesticides and herbicides around the house, office, etc.
- Maybe check in with your doctor for his/her recommendations.

You may already be aware of these, but I wanted to list a few things that came to mind. Good luck!

I have had 2 children and I was really careful on how much weight I gained. With my first pregnancy it was 26 lbs and the second was 28. It was SO easy to lose the weight (especially if you breastfeed, then it just melted off!) I let myself have the cravings I wanted ( deviled eggs) but tried to be careful. I also made sure I got plenty of rest and did a lot of walking.
There is a pretrainer group right now for moms to be, if you are interested, I will send you the link.

Cut out all refined sugars. Don't go too crazy on the diary, especially in the 3rd trimester. Supliment, supliment supliment. Stay well away from cleaning product chemicals and smokers, Don't over do the eggs as well, actually dont have too much of anything as it may cause reation ( before and during pregnancy) Don't eat any pork 3 months before getting pregnant if possible. I suggest getting Pregnancy for Dummies, great book, tons of pics!

cut out bad fish (mercury)

Just read this scary and depressing article about mercury in fish (see link). If this is true it's a scandal. The half-life of mercury in your body is several months, so it takes a year to really undo the exposure from a contaminated fish. Apparently canned tuna is often quite bad, and many women eat a lot of tuna. The most useful part is the list of safe fish:
Summer Flounder
Wild Pacific Salmon
Croaker
Sardines
Haddock
Tilapia
If anyone knows what these are like or how to cook them, I'd like to hear. (salmon I can do -- just pull off skin, and fry in a pan with green onions and tomatos. Yum! I put a pot lid over the fish for a few minutes to act like a little oven and cook it through)
So -- a year before you want to get pregnant, start avoiding big ocean fish for sure. Yet you also want the omega3s. I bought myself some fish oil capsules -- isn't it sad that's what the world is coming to though? It's only safe for our babies to eat fish in PILL form???

folic acid

Also, take folic acid to prevent birth defects. But don't go crazy and don't overdose on vitamins -- too much Vit A (for instance) can actually cause birth defects. Aim for the RDA.

once you get pregnant....

I highly recommend this book, "Positive Pregnancy Fitness" by Sylvia Klein Olkin. I sailed through
w/o discomfort and was able to deliver naturally, in large part to what I learned and practiced from this author. Check your library or amazon.com

highly recommend focusing on getting a very broad array of nutrients and eat a lot of different fruits and vegetables. Many diseases are nutrient deficiencies. You also want to also make sure you take a DHA supplement, especially when you are nursing. This should be a time when you begin to get the toxins out of your body. Stop cleaning your house if you can and get someone else to do it, or switch to Method products.

I know everyone will give you health advice- but make sure to get in shape prior and stay in shape. You'll be less depressed when you are thinner after giving birth. You'll be a little nuts in any case, but being thinner and healthier will help you feel better about yourself, I guarantee you.
