Winter Blues?

Anyone else in a rut right now? It is so cold, I feel like I am in a holding pattern until it warms up a bit.

Amen!

Not only that, it seems everyone in my group is in a rut too. Any suggestions on getting out of it?
I just read an "Ultimate Goal" thread that was very inspiring!

I have been pushing through the cold, walking to dog morning and evening, and I actually see a few other people out there! My inspiration is when I strip all the layers off and look great underneath.

I'm getting there...

in FEB, its finally a real winter here in Boston and its tiresome already. My bf each year say its our last winter and then the glorious summer and fall make us forget. There there we are depressed cold and pale in another winter.

We have been doing more outside as well to battle it... but there is no light at the end of the tunnel yet, last year it wasn't until May that it lifted.

Me too

I'm in Boston too! And I'm ready for the chill to lift. I still go to my aerobics class but I miss being able to walk there rather than drive. (Driving in/around Boston is a major pain in the butt because drivers are so rude compared to other places I've lived: northern CA, DC.)

Amen to the cold weather and bad drivers and horrible roadways in Boston. I'm from Chicago, and I grew up with that fabulous grid system, controlled intersections and something called "right of way" when driving.

Let's look for the brightside: the Minuteman Bikepath (11 miles, Somerville - Lexington), the Common in the nice weather, and the ocean not too far away. I can't wait to head back to Rockport and swim in the summer. I even hit the town resevoir in Arlington for a few swims.

Seasonal Affective Depression and SUNLIGHT!

I was actually thinking of starting a thread concerning this. I was diagnosed wtih seasonal affective depression last fall and winter is REALLY hard for me. One symptom is weight gain with craving carbs. I bought a medlight (sun lamp) which I use faithfully everyday. I found it on ebay. My insurance helped pay for it. It just gives me the Vitamin D and sunlight that I do not get during the winter and desperately NEED. So, even if you are not diagnosed, getting more sunlight can REALLY HELP get you through this hard time.

i've just pulled myself out of a winter rut-i found myself making up excuses not to go workout-just cause i felt blah. i finally told myself to just go to the gym ans workout for 15 minutes. if i felt bad still i could leave immediately. well, duh! obviously once i got moving i felt better and stayed for 45 minutes. i've been playing the same game with myself for two weeks and feeling much better! i hope you can pull out of your rut! :)

That's tough one - I live in Seattle and the short days combined with the perpetually overcast skies in the winter can really do a number on your mood. I try to work 7-4 so that I can at least drive home in the daylight. This really helps me feel like I'm not living life in a vast underground, post-apocolyptic world ;-) Fortunately my employer is quite flexible with the work hours so this is possible. Getting out and going for a walk every day at lunch also helps a great deal - even just a short one.

When I was working out today I was glad to have a couple more months to really get in shape and feel strong come summer. Take this opportunity fo work hard now and feel proud of yourself when you slip on the shorts.

I agree with all of you. I could never get out of bed during the winter months unless the sun was shining. Living in Ontario Canada where we have long winters and very short summers. I even hate opening the blinds cause all you see is snow. Doctor told me I need to move south, and I told him pay me and I'll go. So I dress warm and take the dog for a walk in the daylight (if there is any) and feel so much better afterwards. He gets out for a walk and so do I. Plus I love to curl up with a good book beside the woodstove and get lost in it. It's the 1st of March and we still have 4 feet of snow when is it ever going to stop. I probably have another 2 months of this ugh. I've seen it snow the middle of May here. Cheer up ladies and gentlemen the end is near. Bring on Spring!!
