Tips For Emotional Eating

we are starting to tie a lot of information and discussion together in different areas. This is a link to a page we have developed on emotional eating. It has some tips we have developed, links to other articles we have written, as well as links back to several important community discussions on the issue. The community discussions are great.

Feel free to add anything to the discussion. From our research and observation, we think that the single most important aspect of controlling emotional eating specifically is to find a way of creating space between stimulus and response. What the research shows is that people go directly to eating from the emotional stimulus. Any space that you place between stimulus and response helps to improve your odds of combating this.

We are even thinking about putting a games section on PT, so you have a diversion at night. We'd love to hear your thoughts and feedback about any of this!

Yes, diversions please!

Sure we can play online games at lots of different places, but it would be nice to log my food, check my groups logs, check the community threads, then click on a game without searching further afield.

Hmmmm.... Maybe "Space, the final frontier" is referring to inner space rather than outer space :) Funny I never made that connection before.

Thanks for your efforts at improving the site! It's making a difference in my life.

hmm.. personally I hate the idea of a games forum, it means that the time that I should be out there getting some exercise I will instead be on the computer playing games!
I do however LOVE Lynetta's idea of a chat room so that if we have a burning question or weak moment we can get on there to support each other.

emotional eating

When I get the urge or desire to eat when I am not hungry, but rather bored, stressed, tired, sad, etc., I clean something in my house! That way at the end of the afternoon (usually when it occurs), not only have I not given into my urges, but I have gotten something acclomplished as well! I usually set a timer for anywhere from 15 mins to a half an hour and I usually go way past that time once I get started.

I hope it helps.

emotional eating

What is emotional eating? I come home from work. I can literally pour the refrigerator in my mouth. Is it bored a like of fulfillment at work, or a hidden agenda to sabotage my efforts? I hear emotional eating but sometimes I don't stressed when I am eating the wrong things.

I think a game is a great idea. I often find myself logging in out of boredom when I need a diversion to look in the lounge and other things. I also think a chat room is an awesome idea. I have tried chatting in yahoo chat rooms dedicated for weight loss and the topic is never weight loss. Thank you!

game area? I'm happy with PT, though it would be great to have more people in the lounge. I say do what you do well and don't spread yourself too thin.

No games, yes chatroom

A chatroom would be fabulous because then any questions or concerns will be discussed immediately. A game site would promote a more sedentary lifestyle- just one more factor drawing people to sit in their desk chairs!

meditate

I find that deep breathing and meditation or yoga will stop the emotional eating. It is hard for me because once a month with hormone fluctuations I want SALT and SUGAR. Grrr it's hard. Take supplements and drink lots of water.

I'd love the idea of a live chatroom - let's get that started!

Ever since this thread came out it makes me laugh b/c I read it as if they're looking for tips to *facilitate* emotional eating. So, I think, well #1) have your favorite, go to comfort foods available 24/7. Not healthful stuff; stock the stuff that is high fat, salt and/or sugar! #2) Don't attempt to deal with emotions, go straight for the food...

:)

My tip is to take a bath! It gives me time for the emotional craving to pass, I can't eat in the tub (at least I haven't done it yet), and I come out feeling relaxed and better about myself since I didn't turn to food to cope!

Is it because I am not eating enough?

I was wondering if my binge eating at night is because I am on a diet and my body is trying to maintain a weight level? I am not hungry a little emotional but usually tiered and board. At night I feel a huge lonely need to nurture myself. Like I relate food to loving myself. All I want is a hug and love honestly. Anyone find that emotional eating is the bodies way to stay at a weight?

Emotional eating

When I notice I have an urge to eat and I am not really hungry, or it isn't time to eat, I know there is the danger of a binge.

I have found this to be very helpful: When I have figured out what I want to eat, I say to myself: you can't eat this right now. But when you still want it in 15, 20 minutes, you can eat it.

By not telling myself that I can NOT eat it, I take away some stress. And in 99 of the 100 instances I forget that I wanted to eat something I shouldn't have. Problem solved.
