Heart Rate

Can anyone give me some insight on heart rate? Trainers always talk about keeping your HR at a certain rate. I always thought that the faster you go or more resistance you would burn more calories. How does keeping your HR around the same number help? Thanks!

keeping your heart rate in the target zone means your body is working effieciently. You may not be working yourself as hard as you need to, or you may be working too hard, which can mean you're not burning fat , but rather muscle. (Though the rate at which this happens can vary from person to person). I mean really, how many calories you burn is assumed by the intensity of the workout- that is best measured by your heart rate. For some, walking at 4 mph would be an intense workout. For others it would be a casual stroll. That's why I personally prefer the kravonen method for determing target heart rate. It takes into account your resting heart rate which is better indicator than just your age. Your body gets better at things, and you have to challenge it- your heart rate will let you know how much your challenging it.
