Does tea have less caffeine than coffee?

And how bad is caffeine for you? Does it help your body to cut down?

tea has less caffiene, but some kinds more than others. Caffiene increases water retention, and some argue it prevents fat cellls from being burnt. Definitely a great idea to cut back on it.

Yes, tea has less caffeine, but it contains another stimulant called theobromine.

Herbal infusions, popularly called "teas," can be caffeine-free, and even theobromine-free.

Yerba mate, a popular South American infusion, can have more caffeine than coffee and is packed with other stimulants as well.

As for how bad caffeine is for you, it depends on how much you have! If you're drinking 2 gallons of coffee a day, and grinding your teeth at your desk, it's not good for you. :-) This has been discussed in other threads, but caffeine in moderation is not as bad for you as is often supposed. One thing that turns out to be a total myth, for example, is the link of coffee to lumps in women's breasts.

3:46 poster -- I think you mean that caffeine is a diuretic. It certainly doesn't increase water retention! It's a gut stimulant, as well, BTW -- you know that joke -- Q:what's the diff between a cup of coffee and a bm? A: about 10 minutes.

yerba mate producers argue it has mattiene, which is not the same as caffiene. And it's incredibly high in antioxidants and polyphenols.

That mateine thing is total bs, though. Here's some good info on the active chemicals in yerba mate (scroll down) with references.

go for green...

I had it explained to me once by someone in the know that coffee caffeine is different from tea caffeine- coffee gives you a quick "high" that drops off (that's why coffee drinkers often need a second cup mid-morning) but tea gives you a gentle "high" that plateaus before slowly dropping off.

I am a huge tea drinker. I love coffee, but it makes me sick (an allergy maybe...) Anyway, after visiting Japan a few years ago, I started drinking green tea (loose, not in a teabag.) I found that it suppressed my appetitie, but I could drink a lot of it without feeling jittery. Here's a link with some science backing it up.

A side note: the area I visited in Japan is known for green tea production. The people of that area bragged that they had less heart problems and cancer than other parts of Japan.

The yerba mate link also has a comparison of coffee and tea caffeine, although only black tea! Interesting that tea has more caffeine in the plant, but less makes it into the drink. There's some speculation that caffeine may chemically connect to some other compounds, so maybe that is how tea caffeine is different?

Tea, both green and black, is full of antioxidants and may have many other beneficial properties. Green is probably even better for you, but I love a cup of Earl Grey in the morning. Tea is a good for helping balance our PH levels, as many of us are too acid. As it is typicall brewed, tea has less caffiene than coffee.

Love herbal tea too but I love my black tea in the morning.

Coffee has more antioxidant activity

Believe it or not, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate have all been tested for the effects of their antioxidants on the body, and coffee is the "winner." This is independent of caffeine: decaf does just as well.

Tea has much more caffiene than coffee per dry pound but you use much less tea per cup than coffee, so a cup of coffee has much more caffene than a cup of tea.

The "myth" of coffee leading to lumps in breasts...

This is somewhat true. Coffee itself doesn't lead to lumps in womens breasts, but caffeine definitely can. I personally know several women that if they over indulge in pop, coffee, chocolate, etc that they end up w/cysts in their breasts. I do not suffer from this, but caffeine does effect me. If I over indulge in caffeine then I have a lot of breast pain. My OB-GYN told me to cut back on caffeine and the pain would stop...it did.

The tea caffeine is different

So what we can say about tea caffeine is that it is quite different and it doesn't have the same effects as caffeine that we got used too. That is why Chinese weight loss tea is a extremely useful solution that we offer to all those who want to get rid of their expectations and finally achieve some great results. And it doesn't have any caffeine by the way!

Caffeine

It all depends on what kind of coffee and tea your drinking. The nutritional facts should be on the packages. There are some teas that are caffeine free. But if you are looking for caffeine that's a different story. Just do some internet research about it.
