Starbucks Ice Coffee - Not So Healthy

Has anyone noticed that the calorie count listed for Starbucks ice brewed coffee is 90 calories! I later read an article that stated that they Sweeten the coffee with simple sugar... Do they realize that people get ice coffee assume its 5 calories? Do they realize people are diabetic? I am sooo mad, I think I am making a healthy choice, I never add sugar or milk! I was told that I have to ask for my ice coffee UNSWEETENED... Here's the link on the Starbucks website for the nutrition facts

While I can totally relate to learning that what you once thought was a low calorie indulgence isn't so much (and I've had lots of those moments and they stink!)...Starbucks does make all their info available. And people with special dietary needs should probably take the initiative and do research on all their favorites and make sure it fits their needs!

I still remember seeing a sign in one of their stores about a great *snack*: a skinny latte and one of their baked goods. Do a little research and you learn you just had yourself a 700 calorie snack!

Moral of the story: we can't rely on chains and businesses to look out for us - we've got to do that for ourselves!

So I get a Grande Iced Skinny Vanilla Latte. I've always believed it's 110 calories and 0 fat. (Tall = 90 cal and Venti = 130 cal). Am I right?

Frustration with Restaurants

Ice coffee is one of those that people assume is no calories or 5 calories. It's so frustrating when I try to order lite and healthy and find out that the grilled salmon with veggies is cooked in butter or oil. Even when I order steam veggies I always add "no butter or oil, dry! please!!" The same goes for my egg whites. I understand the chef wants his food to taste delicious... but at the same time if I am substituting lettuce and tomato for the french fries and toast that comes with my eggs and ordering egg whites instead of yolked... COME ON!

I sooo badly want to be able to enjoy my Sunday brunch and lose those 10 stubborn pounds!

I continue to be shocked by the calorie amounts in foods, even typically healthful, low cal choices, but that's what we get when we eat out - lots of calories, fat, salt. That's what makes the food taste good -as the pp said!

I recently got the nutritional information from one of my favorite restaurants, which is not a chain and they serve sandwiches and salads, a few fresh fish dishes...nothing is fried and portions are not huge. There wasn't a single item on the menu that was reasonable (for me) in terms of calories or sodium (2000+ mg!). Everything was 700-1200 calories - and that didn't count the sides. And to look at their menu, you'd think you were in pretty good shape.

UGH. I think you can have your sunday brunch and lose those ten pounds, you just have to load up on fresh fruit...and you can do that at home, so there's a part of me who says, 'Why bother?!?!' lol. Reality bites, as they say.

is this true?

Does starbucks really sweeten iced coffee? I always assumed it was straight ice coffee.

I just ask for iced coffee - black, and I've never had any sugar added to it. I hate sugar in my coffee, so I would taste it. can't you taste it?

According to the News Article in a LI paper, they add a simple sugar so the black ice coffee taste better... aka sweeter. I think I will just say unsweetened ice coffee now just how my friend always asks for her tea unsweetened.
I just feel that had I known about the extra calories, I would have allotted for it. I rather treat myself to a glass of pinot grigio every night then my morning venti ice coffee hehehe

The Starbucks I frequent always asks me if I want it sweetened. I find it very strange that any Starbucks would not ask someone this question.

Well where I live there's a Starbucks on every corner and it's a total crapshoot whether they ask you or not. However if you watch your drink being made, you'll note that they put a pump or two of syrup in there and that's the simple syrup that the OP is talking about. Some baristas ask - others just make it as per the standard process and pressume you know what you're ordering.

Moral of the story - no one is going to look out for you as well as you, so be vigilant, educate yourself and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Ask for an iced americano - just shots of espresso and ice and water - nothing else. You can ask for room and add a little milk or cream if you want, but you control it. They NEVER add sugar to these, at least in the northwest.

I make a batch of coffee, stick it in a pitcher in the fridge, and fill up a travel mug in the morning with some ice. So easy, and SO much cheaper!

Starbucks forgot to ask me once if I wanted it sweetened or not and I could totally taste the simple syrup they put in...regular coffee doesn't taste like that! Didn't you notice?

You can still enjoy your iced coffee, just ask for it unsweetened or ask for a sugar free syrup to be added...simple as that.

I consume way too much sugar that I probably wouldn't realize the taste present... I think I am addicted to sugar substitutes and sugar free products. Oh dear

Got to second the 1:59 AM poster's iced americano suggestion. It is so delicious, you may never go back to plain iced coffee. Or ask for your iced coffee with a shot, no sugar added. The espresso gives it such a great flavor.

iced coffee recipe

yeah ask for sugar free,or make it yourself buy "torani" flavored syrup in sugar free versions i add 1 cup cooled coffee to 1 shot of caramel flavored torani and 1/2 cup ice and 1/2 cup either soymilk or nonfatmilk, i dont blend this but i sure you can my syrup cost me 5.99 bottle and i get a bout 32 oz iced coffees, if you like add some nonfat whip topping, i posted a modified clean eating thread "apparently people are afraid of the clean eating tag" lol and this recipe with a pic is in one of my past food logs. you don't have to give up the things you love just modify them!

Duh! All the sugar and milk they put in it has a bunch of calories. That's why I ask for skim milk and sugar-free vanilla on mine all the time!

Mind boggling...

I don't see this so much as a 'duh' issue when you're talking about black, iced coffee, which according to their website - is a sweetened drink + whatever you ask for. It's not unreasonable to assume that they AREN'T adding a sweetener to it. That one surprised me. And it is annoying. Almost anything else on their menu I pretty much assume is a calorie nightmare!

You can shake the starbucks addiction 4:49p!! After more skinny lattes than I care to admit - I kicked the habit in 2009. I haven't bought a drink from there yet this year!! I'm probably hundreds of dollars richer ;)
