OT: Very Difficult Co-Worker

I am dealing with an extremely difficult co-worker. Not only is she unpleasant to be around in general, but she is also rude to our clients. She calls HR every single time something doesn't go her way. She insists on having several days off around every holiday. She pits our boss against the rest of the office by lying about what we're doing and making it seem that she is the only one doing any work --- when in reality it is quite the opposite! She often comes in late and leaves early, then complains about not getting enough hours.

No one will do anything about it because she has made a seemingly frivolous lawsuit against our company in the past... AND WON. Whenever she doesn't like something that is going on, she threatens to sue again. It is absolutely insane.

Has anyone dealt with anything like this before? I love my job, and she makes me not want to go to work. My supervisor is already looking for another job because she can't deal with the stress this woman has created.

What can I do? Can I call HR and report her for making a hostile work environment? Any advice would be appreciated.

Are you in a right to work state?

I would explore the hostile environment issue with HR. You have nothing to lose and she sounds like she's poison in the dept.

There are a couple of things you can do, though. The issue of her callling HR, taking days off, coming in late and leaving early, and complaining about hours...unless these things directly affect your job - let it go. Let those who deal with those things deal with it. And do this for no other reason than deciding that you will NOT allow someone else's drama drive you from a job you love. Refuse to give her that kind of power.

Be able to articulate and document what you do so that there is no question about your work and you can refute any claims she has to the contrary.

Finally, keep your head down and focus on you and your job and steer clear of her as much as you can. Don't listen to her complaints. Calmly counter misinformation about you that she gives your boss.

We can't control other people, but we can control our reactions to them. She sounds like a real pain in the butt and poison to the department, but you can still decide how you react to her. If it helps, view her as a miserable, pathetic person and take pity on her b/c people who are happy, well adjusted, and reasonable don't behave this way!

Sorry it sucks to go to work!

Great advice 9:43!

you can take it in another direction too. Get your coworkers to start looking around for another job FOR HER. Call the headhunters and get that girl out of there!

I believe that unfortunately there's not much you, personally, can do to take care of the situation yourself. This is a management issue, the company will have to make a business decision between keeping their other hard working employees versus keeping one that "might" sue them for something. I'm sure HR has en extremely thick file on this woman and probably documents EVERYTHING just in case they have to go to court again. Most companies have "exit" interviews and most people will say things in those that they won't say otherwise, if enough people leave due to this one woman, Management will have to to take notice. There's a business to run above all else.
