need serious help, please

I am a 16 year old girl 5'1ish and 132 pounds! Just 6 months ago i was 105 pounds. I was on a raw diet which is only eating fruits, veggies and nuts. When my mom forced me to eat real food again I gained over 30 pounds. I lost a few pounds lately but it is SO hard now. What do you guys think I should do to lose some weight? And im talking about 30 pounds. I hate myself constantly now and I'm just not happy with what happened to me. Should I go back on this diet? Or what??

It sounds as if you and your Mom should both visit a nutritionist and let a professional establish a healthful diet that you both can live with.

Personally, I don't think a raw diet as you describe is very good for you. However, if "real food" is chips and cheese dip, that's not any better!

16 and going raw, and hating yourself sounds like you need to see a counsellor more than you need to lose weight.

Remember (you and Mom) that a serving of red meat is 3 oz.! Not much. Try for brown rice. And maybe chicken and fish? There's a lot of room for healthy eating between red meat and raw.

focus of nutrient dense foods. Some raw food is great, but you'll be much better off if you focus on these foods:

Also- you might want to meet your mom halfway- say you'll eat grass fed beef if she buys that. You shouldn't be forced to eat food, but you also want to not get too crazy about it either in terms of philosophy.

If you focus on the overall quality of your food, that is no different than anything else in your life- quality of clothes, car etc. Makes it much easier to get a handle on.

It's possible that while you were on the raw diet you weren't getting enough nutrients and your metabolism slowed down, so when you started eating normally again your weight shot up. I don't think raw diets are a good idea for youngsters who are still growing. It's very hard to eat a balance diet when you eat raw, especially if you aren't taking supplements and spending time planning your meals.

Your BMI is in the healthy range right now, and losing 30 pounds might be too much of a loss. At your age it's probably better to shed a few extra pounds through exercise rather than dieting. It'll keep your metabolism up, encourage muscle tone, etc.

Careful With The Pesticides

Here's the thing. While most raw diets are "OK" if you don't know much about it and attempt it, it could be actually very harmful for you. Some vegetables are sprayed with pesticides that are only deactivated with heat. I've heard of many cases where people's thyroid function were reduced substantially due to taking in pesticides. Please be very careful of what you eat.

To follow up on Ryan's point, pesticides can really mess up your system. If you live near a whole foods- they sell frozen organic veggies that are fairly affordable.

Toxins can effect more than just your thyroid- they can mess up your whole system, which helps create weight loss resistance.

Here is something we wrote that introduces a pretty scary concept called "Combinational Toxicology"- basically as you load up on toxins, your odds of various things going haywire increases:

How Toxins Mess You Up

I'd also add that organic green vegetables are highly detoxifying. They literally clean your cells out. Things like broccoli and kale are ridiculously good for you. Onions and mushrooms are also particularly helpful in cleaning out your cells.

Here is something that you might want to read that talks about a simple formula for staying healthy. If you focus on the basics of this, and just add some of this stuff in, you'll feel pretty good:

Your doctor can do a simple test to find out if you have a thyroid problem, but it's incredibly rare at your age. If you have a family history it would be worth getting tested though.

The weight gain you described doesn't sound that unusual for someone your age. Your body is probably still changing, and you could be growing upwards, growing breasts/hips, etc.
