Has anyone tried this program? is there a support group here with memeber who are on it? The dr suggested it to me yesterday, and with all my food allergies, I do have a couple questions I need answered!

So your doctor prescribed South Beach to you, but did not discuss your food allergies.....???

South Beach

I have done South Beach in the past, and may be able to help. (I went off the program when I found out I was pregnant with my son in late 2003 and am on WW now but enjoyed SB!)

South Beach

I did the South Beach diet for a several months last year after thoroughly reading the book. Being that this "diet" was coming created by a cardiologist, I was a bit skeptical. However, Dr. Agatston does a simply wonderful job of explaining exactly what happens to your body when you intake sugars and refined carbohydrates. And for me, being a huge sweet-tooth, I have to say it was one book that REALLY made me stop and rethink my eating sugar.

I think the South Beach "diet" (or "way of life") is very sound in the sense that it basically tells you that yes you can eat carbs, just choose the right kind of carbs. Yes you can eat fruit, but realize that it has sugar in it too. I felt very "cleansed" inside when I was following the SB diet and I did lose weight.

Be advised though that the SB diet needs committment, because it goes in 3 phases and you have to be the type of person who is able to follow a strict "plan" and be very systematic, in my opinion. That was my only complaint, as I had a hard time keeping my eating within those phases and found that something more long term (as in "here is what the right way to eat, general guideline, use it for the rest of your life) kind of thing works better for me instead of "Ok so for 2 weeks I'm eating this, and then 2 weeks after that I have to eat that, and then...".

But don't get me wrong, I think that the South Beach way of eating is very healthy and if you choose to try it, then you will feel great. ;o)

with sb diet i experienced great energy throughout the day and was rarely hungry between meals. does take some time, pre-planning for lunches, etc. but i do believe it is a reasonable, realistic way to eating for life. the hardest part is phase 1, but the benefits are astounding. my mother's blood levels were positively effected by the changes in her eating (she is a huge sweets and breads gal), but her cholesterol, bloop pressure, triglycerides, and sugar levels reached normal range after just a week or two of following the sb diet!

South Beach

I did the SB diet over a year ago, and I definitley lost weight. The book makes a lot of sense, and I found it pretty easy to follow. BUT after about 3 months I got so sick of not eating carbs and the limited menu, that I began eating them again. I missed cereal, fruit, and was sick of eating omelettes every morning and salads for lunch with balsamic vinegrette and oil. My stomach actually hurt from skipping the carbs. I found that as soon as I started eating more carbs, the weight came back on. I know Dr. Agatson has come out with more books in addition to the first one with more menu options, but I just feel like, as with any diet, the minute you begin eating what your body really wants again, you put the weight back on. I truly believe it's a good diet for very overweight people who need to get their blood sugar levels down, etc., but for someone who just wants to lost about 15 lbs, the best method is everything in moderation. Weight watchers has worked for almost everyone I know that has done it, and their philosophy is eating lots of fruit and veggies, and sticking to a points system, which seems smarter than cutting out carbs.
