Poll: when it comes to coffee, am I addicted to the sugar or the caffeine?

Having an insane time quitting coffee. Anyone know which one it is that I'm having the problem with?

Probably either the caffeine or the mental thought of it waking you up in the morning. Are you an AM drinker? I know when I quit awhile back I had really bad headaches from the caffeine deprivaion. Now I'm back on it on the weekdays while at work, but because I feel like it wakes me up in the morning.

Thoughts: Maybe try half-caff for a week, then decaf for a week, then quit. If it is the caffeine, that will get you off it a bit gentler. If it's a "wake up" kinda thing, find an activity to replace your AM cup with, like a 10-20 minute walk.

My guess is the caffiene, too. Do you have problems with eating too mcuh sugar in other areas of your diet?

I think cutting back like the above poster said is a good idea. Also, maybe try tea? It has less caffiene (especially green) and more antioxidents. Try following all the good sleep habbits, too - going to bed at the same time every night, keeping your bedroom dark, getting exposure to morning light whenever possible, etc.

There have been some interesting articles lately about caffiene, sleep, and how being chronically overtired can lead to obesity. Many of them point to a viscious cycle of drinking caffiene to stay awake because you're tired from not getting enough sleep because you drank too much caffiene the day before.

Here's one article linking chronic lack of sleep to obesity:

i QUIT coffee, and joined the "tea" club :

Hey Elle,
I actualy quit coffee. I used to drink about 3-4 cups a day, at least! I would drink it for the laste, the wake - up factor and purley habit.By accident, I didnt grab my morning cup one day and had a HUGE headache, so i took some asprin to alleviate it. That particular day was REALLY busy so i didnt go out for my afternoon cup. By the end of the day, i didnt want any. The next day it bacame a game for me...how long could i go before i went back?? I now drink tea whenever i want to, like in the am.......and drink coffee sparingly. I def. hve a sweet tooth, so i had to give up coffee first then about a week and a half ago , i gave up sweets. I stopped coffee long before i gave up sweets, giving up one thing at a time, allows me to have more control of that particualr food group, it wond have that mentel control over me anymore :)
Hope your withdrawral process goes well! I like that the other poster suggested trying 1/2 caf, then decaf - GREAT IDEA :)
Best,

caffeine in tea

I don't know how the quantities compare to coffee, but there IS caffeine in many kinds of tea. You might want to check out the amounts if you're worried about your caffeine intake.

To the above poster: you are right, there is caffeine in EVERY kind of tea made from the tea plant (black, green, oolong, white). Herbal tea is made from herbs, not the tea plant, so it does not have caffeine. And contrary to popular belief, green tea does not necessarily have less caffeine than black tea. The caffeine content depends on a number of factors, including where the tea was grown, how it was processed, and how long it is brewed for.

Here is a link to a webpage that sites the US Pharmacopeial Convention and lists the quantities of caffeine found invarious beverages and foods:

(I found most interesting the fact that 8 oz of cocoa has the same amount of caffeine as a cup of DEcaffeinated coffee...I'd always been told that chocolate has a lot of caffeine.)
