i love ice cream

i know . . this is very bad of me . . .but

i love ice cream!!!!!

ahh!!! i LOVE it!! my boyfriend buys it all the time (we live together) and if i know it is in there, i end up having some every day till the thing is gone!

the worst part, is that the more i eat it, the more i want to eat it the next day, and when it's all gone, i'm rummaging around the kitchen trying to find something that will fill my ice cream void!! anyone else do this???

Try Edy's line of ice cream that has the label "half the fat." I don't even notice the fact that it's half the fat anymore.

Tell your boyfriend to stop buying it. Once you give up icecream for a week or so you'll no longer have the cravings.

When I have an icecream craving, I buy a reduced fat icecream in the small container and measure out a serving each night. Compared to the amount I used to eat it seems like too little at first, but take the time to savor the taste and it's actually more satisfying than mindlessly gobbling a huge bowl full.

I agree with the above, savor what you love! If you don't, you'll eventually end up rebelling against your own rules and bingeing on something. Ask yourself if you really want ice cream, and if it really tastes good and have a bit every day. What's really wrong with having one serving of ice cream every day?

One serving of ice cream a day is probably what causes you to remain fat/unsatisfied with your weight. I can see having ice cream on say, your own birthday, if it is your favorite food. That said, I don't think ice cream is a food that should be kept in the house.

If I want ice cream I get the reduced fat Breyers (their carb smart is wonderful BTW!) and measure out 1 serving and enjoy it!

I also really like the skinny cow ice cream sandwiches.

I have no problem regularly fitting a small treat into my day. However I definitely plan for it! I measure my portion, I know how many calories it is and I adjust the rest of my meals/snacks accordingly.

You know what,
I LOVE ice cream and the only 1 I ever met that I didn't like was Lobster Ice cream (because of the lobster being too icey, but the ice cream part was good!)

Anyways, when it comes to ice cream, I DON'T stock it in my fridge.

Instead, if I want to get some, I will go and get the best quality possible, but only in a small container. (or go to an ice cream shop and get 1 scoop in a cup, no cone.)

This keeps me from indulging all of the time!

Also, I've found Chocolate covered bananas at Trader Joes' (easy to make your own, too-- just stick a banana on a popsicle stick, dip the banana in melted chocolate chips and freeze.) It tastes cold & creamy like an ice cream bar, but is far better for you! (again, in small doses, of course!)

i say talk to your bf about it. tell him to only buy small containers of ice cream- like a pint of something delicious. that way, he can get his fix but there's not a huge tub sitting in the freezer, calling your name each night.
i also agree with the previous poster- every once in a while, go out and treat yourself to a single-scoup ice cream cone. if you're serious about losing weight & being healthy you should keep that stuff out of the house!

to the 11.01pm Tuesday poster - I agree with the poster who suggested ice cream only on special occasions. The reason Americans are so obese is that they forgot that cakes and ice creams used to be a special treat, and now most people have a cake, ice cream or candy bar everyday...

We feed each others habit

My boyfriend and I have the same problem...we are a terrible influence on each other in that respect because we are both weak. We can not stock it in the house and measuring out a portion is impossible...we have to eat the whole thing to "get rid of it". Our solution is to not get it at all and to say we can have it if we are at our goal weight by the time his birthday comes around or something. Making it something special that we do together once in a while (not every night) will make it taste better. If your boyfriend insists on getting it and you don't want it, tell him to get a flavor that you don't like so you won't be tempted. I am with you on this one though...I LOVE the ice cream! :)

I would argue that people are obese because they eat too much of all the foods they eat, and they mostly eat unhealthy foods. No one sticks to one portion, they eat four or five. That's where a problem occurs.

I would also argue that if you continue to restrict yourself, especially from a food you really like, you will end up binging later, and then feeling guilty for "going off" your diet.

Find a way to make ice cream part of a healthy lifestyle. If it works for you to have it in the house, and you can eat one serving (under 200 calories) at a time, do it. Even the government leaves 200 calories in their diet plan for treats. If it works better for you to treat yourself once in a while, do that.

My strategy for ice cream

I keep a big bag of frozen strawberries on hand, and I will take a cup of them and put the in microwave for 60 sec on defrost setting-they will still be slightly icey. I then cut the into bite-sized pieces and pour over 1/4 c.-1/2 c. ice cream. It takes a long time to eat, is so delicious and leaves me fuller than if I had eaten 3-4 times more ice cream.

To 11:31AM Moderation poster - ha, no one eats just 200 cal of treats per day. In ideal world, yes, I'd just have a small piece of cake and will stop. Unless you're French - it's very hard to master (and skinny French eating all buttery stuff is a myth - women do restrict themselves there). And 200 cal ice cream to be any sufficient enough portion will have to be low-fat - ick! I'd say treat yourself to fruits and small choc every day, and save a big caloric splurge for special ocasions or weekends (when you're active). This way it will taste special. you can't eat fillet mignon everyday, like Jackie Mason said...

OP here . . thanks for all your suggestions!

i think gettingthe ice cream out of the house is my best bet! for now! Poor boyfriend doesn't get it-he's like "why can't you either just not have it or have a little?" haha. Well, because I have no control! I too have the "finish it" instinct!

There is a great ice cream place down the street, perhap i will suggest to him that we make a date of it and head there for a small treat once in a while!

Un-favorite flavor

Here's something my hubby and I worked out: If there is a flavor that he likes that isn't my fav, he can have it in the house. That translates out to cookies- He likes crunchy, I like soft/chewy: Soda- He likes Dr Pepper, I can't stand it; and chocolate- He likes milk, I've switched to dark totally. So try to figure out something he likes that you won't touch unless absolutely desperate. Might help you keep your domestic bliss!

12:18 Poster

Your post reminds me about the book, "French women don't get fat" by Mireille Guiliano It's not the idea of you can eat anything you want in any portion you want, it's you can eat what you with tradeoffs. Americans (and I'm one too) are often too focused on the "bigger is better" and "I can have it all now, now, now " attitude.

More isn't better because you wont enjoy it as much as you would something scarce and therefore more appreciated, and we can have it all, but we'll pay for it in our waist lines.

re: 12:18

yeah, I read that book too. I must say, I have tried to what she preached for a while, but it's very hard not to overindulge. Was it something like half inch thick baguette in her book? It's tiny, especially when baguette is really skinny and airy! It takes years of habit and cultural norm to learn to eat like french - all that butter and duck fat - yum! (even French are battling their bulge now - they had an article in NYTimes couple months ago on a big govt campaign against obeisity). I'm also big fan of Tony Bourdain show - the one he does in Paris - almost every Parisian that appeared there was overweight! Food is also very cheap here in the US - compared to Europe, so it's easy to overeat, and overdo when cooking. If a pint of ice cream was say 20 bucks (which is what you'd probably pay if you got the same pint by scoop price in an ice cream shop), you'd probably think twice before stocking on it every day.

Few things:
First, I sometimes buy light cool whip and mix it with frozen berries...sometimes satisfies the craving. Otherwise, Im down with the diet ice creams like skinny cow that everyone else recommends...

Second, to the poster near the top that said only have the ice cream on your bday this is why youre fat (totally paraphrasing!) are you kidding??? If it were me and you told me not to have it, Id substitute something else that's worse AND i'd be bitchy and depressed. (Honestly, try prying chocolate from me when I have my period and you will regret the post!!) :) Yes, we should all eat better, but I honestly would be happier with my one treat a day and working out more. Ice cream never killed anyone (I dont think) just use common sense.

It's not impossible to eat like they say in "French Women don't get Fat." I used to eat huge quantities of junk when I ate it, go on binges and eat a pint of ice cream or a box of cookies. But I don't do that anymore. I've been on PeerTrainer for a little over a year, and I'd say I've changed my habits completely. I can't believe the poster who said "no one eats only 200 calories of treats a day!" At one point, I thought like that too. But now, I can't imagine eating that many treats in a day! I'd be so hungry, b/c they'd have to take the place of the nutritional food that I eat now. I wouldn't eat them in addition to the nutritional foods. Okay, maybe some days. I'm certainly not perfect. There are days that I may eat 500 calories in treats, or more. But, on average, I'd say my treat intake stays under 50 calories a day, and I'm happy to get the treats that I do get! And I'm happy with what my body is starting to look like!

But, in response to the ice cream thread... This may not work for all people, but maybe it'll work for some. I love ice cream as well, and chocolate, etc. I recently (probably 3-4 weeks ago) bought a container of the new Dips ice cream - bite-sized pieces of ice cream covered in chocolate. A container has 2 servings; each serving is over 300 calories, and is about 25 of these bite-sized pieces of ice cream! So each one is around 15 calories. When I'm craving ice cream or a sweet bite of something, I go to my freezer, grab one, close my freezer, and eat it. I never take the container out of the freezer, and never have more than one at a time, or occasionally, 2. The container has lasted my fiance and I close to a month!

I like it b/c I get my ice cream when I want it, and really even a serving of low fat ice cream, for 200 calories, makes me feel deprived and also guilty for spending that many calories. For me, it works great! I also keep frozen mini charleston chews in the freezer (about 15 calories each too), but I think I like the Dips better now!

Thanks so much, above poster! Two weeks ago, I thought I needed to eat tons of food to feel satisfied, too, and I thought I could never trust myself to have forbidden or bad foods in the house.

I started reading the book Intuitive Eating, and it has totally changed the way I think about food. I am at my goal weight, but I count calories like crazy, plan meals, don't buy junk, etc. Then on weekends sometimes, I'll just binge on treats and not know why. It's actually because I was being so restrictive by counting calories all the time. I've started slowly buying things I previously considered off limits, and if I pay attention and eat what I want when I am hungry and stop when I am full, I am way more satisfied. It is possible. I am learning to trust myself and my instincts with food. And when I add it all up later, my body knew the right amount of calories to feed me with.

another icecream substitute

one fellow group member suggested I get yogurt (just stir up fruit on the bottom kind beforehand) and put it in the freezer... works just the same as regualr frozen yogurt... it is shopping day and I am going to try it.

Real frozen yogurt

You could make one in an ice cream maker w/ plain wholemilk yogurt, fruits and maybe some little sweetener. Commercial fruit yogurts have too much sugar in them.

If you live in or visiting NYC - try frozen yogurt in a basement of Bloomingdales - oh so delicious - tastes just like yogurt not that watery tasteless crap you get elsewhere.
