OT?-new clothes-unimpressed?

Hi!
In losing weight and having a few birthday/Christmas checks, I was going to get some clothes. But all I have seen so far is strappy dress like shirts with prints I just don't like. Is anyone else less than impressed with the selection of clothes this season? I am in my early 30's- if that helps anyone. One store I was in- there was an older woman in her 60-70's and she really appeared like she was not "into" the current trend. Am I just an ol' "fogey " now?
I would not mind the dress/shirt look, if they were a solid or prettier print- though I am not liking the ragged -uneven hemlines.
thanks.

Just as an example, I like the style of this dress and the prints are nice- it just won't fit me yet. grrrr.

My best advice is to try on a LOT of things, even if you think you won't like them. You will be surprised what looks good! Try skirts, pants, dresses, tank tops, whatever... celebrate the parts of your body that you love now that you are losing weight.

try J Crew - their thing is they sell timeless classic chics so they don't go crazy over latest trends. I think you can find larger sizes online.

Shop at discount places like TJ Maxx and Marshalls - they usually discount because they sell past seasons models - maybe you'd find them better than today's trends.

My daughter is going on 26 and she loves Old Navy, Gap and American Eagle. I agree with above poster. Try it on you might be surprised how it looks on your. Keep looking I'm sure you will find something you like.

Thanks for the links, gave us a sense of your style. Try abercrombie and fitch, they fit curvy body types really well. Jcrew also has great summer dresses.

I completely agree!

I went shopping recently and was just appalled at women's current fashion. I am 33. I was looking for a work-appropriate cardigan for a friend, and something nice for me. Everything seemed to be gauzy, rhinestoney, tank tops or pointlessly-short crocheted sweaters with beads and tassles and crap. It struck me as all really tacky. I'm sure that stuff looks cute on teenagers, but where are the clothes for adult women who want to be taken seriously? I finally found some very cute stuff at Ann Taylor, which is more traditional. (they have adorable dresses on clearance now) I hate to be uptight, but how are women ever going to seize the reins of power if we dress and act like little girls? And should we be spending that much mental energy on clothing anyway? From now on I think I'll go with nice simple stuff from LLBean, Eddie Bauer, or Lands End and just be a boring old preppy... Plus, the mall nightmare is no longer fun. Maybe I am an old fogey.

I LOVE Ann Taylor Loft. It's always classic, not too uber-trendy, and cut so some pieces are fun and some are conservative. I know their pants don't fit a lot of people - if you have a narrow waist but wider hips/thighs, they're great; if you have a wider waist, the legs will be so wide that they will make you look fatter... But the tops are pretty universal, I think. They're generally solids and some basic patterns.

My other favorite is Anne Klein, but only at the outlets; it's a bit pricey otherwise.

Oh, I'm 23. My peers are all still shopping at H&M and Express, but I've had too "womanly" a body for that to look anything other than skanky for quite awhile! (big boobs) The skimpy strappy tops never look good on me, even now that I'm at my goal weight - under 120 lbs! Conservative flatters everyone!

What about Lerner New York? They have some solid colors/work style clothes. It would be cheaper than some of the other ones mentioned. I'm pregnant, so I don't buy clothes there right now, but have found some nice stuff. Good luck to you and good for you for having a healthy body but not flaunting it.

boho is really in this year, and I personally can't stand it. Those long flowy skirts are so shapeless to me, and the ones that hit mid calf do nothing for me...

However, as to the grabbing the reins of power, I'm a woman, and damn proud of it, so all my clothes will have a very feminine side- either a great accessory or a bright color. I refuse to dress plain boring or preppy. What's the point of taking power if you have to act like a man to get it? Defeats the whole purpose in my mind...

hi!
Thanks for the comments. ... Well I went out into the pouring rain, even found a friend to look after my ds- and when I got to the store that I had called and researched online I could not find anything- well one dress- that I even wanted to try on. It was a plus sized store 1x plus... and everything was so shapeless like wearing a huge long t-shirt or mumu... since I have been working on myself I don't quite feel like hiding, though the dress I tried on was a purple batik- a pretty print, and the top part was all scrunched up "smocked?" and there was a tie in the back...(though never a shape that was really flattering. I then realized I would have to get a different bra -one because I looked so "low" and freaking flat.. and because the dress did not cover the bra under the arm... bra shopping is on the agenda but I can only do so much in one afternoon. I am kinda ticked because this morning I asked the saleslady if she had a specific dress that I had seen online and she seemed to be looking and then came back and said she had lots of red dresses... and it there were none nowhere near that shape or style or color...
All that gas and effort-poof.

I also love Ann Taylor and Ann Taylor Loft (generally less expensive). You can always find classic business dress, casual business and casual clothes. Also, try Talbots if you can find one. I'm in my 40's and find some of the new fashions cute but not, as my mother used to say, for women of a certain age. The more upscale fashion magazines (Vogue, Elle, Harper's) often have articles on how to dress at any age. I have found those to be very helpful as I transition from younger womean to, dare I say, a woman of a certain age.

Another idea is to find a seamstress (through word of mouth) and buy the pattern and fabric you like. I know a couple of ladies, both retired teachers who now work out of their homes. I am short, short-waisted and a D-cup with a muscular build. It is very difficult to shop off the rack. For special occaions I find a pattern (or even a picture in a magazine) that I like, pick out my own material and voila...an original just for me that actually fits. The cost is about what I would have paid at the mall.

I do know how to sew- though whenever I have tried to make something for myself to wear I usually don't finish it. So I am hesitant to start on something for me.

Are you looking for a dress or other clothing? I just bought a really great beige skort at Lane Bryant -- they have it in white and also denim (I think I'm going to break down and buy them this week). They have a lot of solid t-shirts also that have a longer length to them. What are you looking for?

I have to agree with the 12:18 poster -- that dress does look matronly for someone in their 30's (I'm 37, by the way). Can you take a friend shopping with you to give you their input?

The link really does not show the dress off well. I had a dress of similar style in a 20w and loved wearing it... this one was in an 18w and shows off my figure without being too revealing. I am picking out a dress for church- and I do have a 2 year old tagging about. So if matronly is the word that means distinguished or mature woman, I guess that is what I am.
When the dress is worn and has movement, the front parts (or "jacket") flare out and reveal the dress underneath which is a different pattern or solid like my other dress was.
I don't have a friend that could come... maybe in a few weeks as one is changing her job to weekends but that would mean 3 under 4yrs in a clothing store...(rotfl) It was enough coordination going out that one afternoon getting the other friend to watch my son.. and the day I found that dress I actually had my son with me... he was laying on the floor trying to scoot his way out under the door so I had to pull his leg the other way, so he could not escape, which made him giggle, and then it bacame a game for him to scoot head first toward the door and for me to pull him back while trying the dress on... I kept my pants and shoes on around my ankles... I really would have been in a tight spot if he had wiggled away.

I like the style of the dress, very simple. I find it hard to adjust to the new styles, I don't like the way the look on, and some just reveal to much. Call me old fashioned, or whatever, but I really don't want to know what you look like without clothes on and some of things, people are wearing, well... they might as well not have put anything on.

I'm 23, and I think the OP's "matronly" dress looks like the perfect church outfit!

I'm not saying I'd wear it, but, hey, I'm Jewish. And the only time I go to synagogue is for the High Holidays, on which everyone wears suits (women and men), so that dress wouldn't really come into play. Same with work.

The dress looks pretty and comfortable, what more could anyone ask for?!
