spinning butt

I just took my first ever spinning class and my ass is killing me. I know there are special biking pants but nobody in the class wears them so I think I may just be doing it wrong. The instructor knew I was new and adjusted my bike but didn't say anything about form except to keep the ribcage open.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe the muscles that are sore are the ones you haven't used before? if it's in the "saddle" region, you might consider getting padded biking pants...

I used to do a lot of spinning and I actually don't think it is is an out of shape thing so much as a bruising thing from the bike. My experience is as follows - when you haven't been spinning before or for a while, the first few days are really painful, and then it just goes as away as that part of your body gets used to the spinning bike. I've never seen anyone wear padded biking shorts to class, but some people do bring padded slip covers for the bike seats - some gyms cell them otherwise you'd need to get them from a biking stroe.

thanks so much :)

i did notice that one girl in the class had a seat cover but she appeared to be bouncing a lot. Do you think that could be from the cover or did she just not have the tension high enough?

The bouncing girl didn't have enough resistance - very bad, it can totally mess up your knees.

Give spinning a few more tries, it soreness in your butt will go away. I would feel free to wear padded bike shorts. You don't have to invest in the super expensive pair for spinning, but if you bike, it's worth it. A LOT of women at my gym wear padded bike shorts, but a lot of the spinners at my gym use the class as part of their training for biking/triathlon season. I bike a lot, but rarely wear padded bike shorts in class.

Long story short: do what feels right for you. Spinning is a GREAT workout - awesome calorie burn and it will do wonders for your thighs and backside.

I got a padded (gel) seat cover and it has worked miracles! They are only about $10 at target.

awesome! thanks :)

It's not nearly as bad now as it was this morning. My favorite part of the class..watching the sweat drip off my chin. I'll be back.

i ride outdoors a lot and i notice that after a long ride (if i haven't ridden in a while) then my butt gets quite sore, especially if i try to ride two days in a row. you may get used to the sore feeling and it may not be so bad next time!

If bicycling in the real world is the same, I get sore near my tailbone and in my crotch (I am female) My friend who teaches a spinning class says she wears her biking shorts to class. I recommend buying some, then wear some baggier shorts over them so it's not obvious you are wearing bike shorts. They do look really funny when you aren't used to them.

OP update... I did the class again yesterday with a gel seat cover and it wasn't nearly as bad. I stayed up when they were doing all the "ups & downs" though, just to be on the safe side. I'm going to get some cycling shoes so I'll check out the shorts while I'm there. Thanks!

Cant find a gel seat cover.

I just took my firt spin class and loved it! I was very very sore during the first half hour until someone threw me a gel cushion.A-h-h-..the cool gel and the padding made all the difference. I appreciate hearing about all your experiences...heres mine. moving back on the seat so the rear is over the back edge and keeping your pelvic bones "wide" helps alot. I'm having trouble finding a store that sells gel seat covers and i dont know enough to be able to judge a good thick one by online pictures. Does anyone know a company that sells good ones online or knows of a store in Manhattan. Thanks.
