Beef jerky, in small quanties is probably ok, but it is so high in sodium. I used to carry around some for my emergency food in my car, still a good strategy. Good for hiking, but I don't think it is a good idea to make this part of the daily diet because of the sodium.

There are lots of different beef jerky out there, you could do better then beef jerky though, say turkey jerky. Most are pretty high in sodium but if you don't have any issues with salt nothing wrong with chewing on it.

I think like most things it's fine in moderation but don't overdo it. I like it for long car rides and hiking because it takes a long time to chew and gets the salivary glands working. I don't think I would make it a regular snack though - there are so many better alternatives with more nutients and less salt.
