no, i'm actually NOT pregnant

i was shopping at a baby's-r-us, with a registry list in my hand, when some stranger came up and asked me when was i due? to her shock and horror, and to my embarassment, i explained that i am actually NOT pregnant, but thanks for asking...

now i am very depressed about my body image-even more than i was before! i am a large woman, but now i feel like a blimp...

She was just probably excited about you having the list and that you were in a baby store.

I was in a store once with my bone rail thin friend and she had the same thing happen to her.

Don't feel like a "blimp" in certain situations people assume a lot, this kind of thing happens all the time.

People just get excited about the thought of a new life in this world.

I have had this happen too! It is how I carry my weight and what clothing I am wearing...It actualy hapened to me when I was much thinner (about 130 lbs) but I was wearing a dress with no waist that was not very flattering. Now I weigh about 160 and it is even worse. I asked to borrow some ski clothes one time and a " friend" told me she might have some maternity ski clothes I could borrow??!

That's happened to me twice!

Once when I was 16 in the supermarket and once in college. The one as a 16 year old hurt because it was an older woman who gave me a very disparaging look and all I want to do was scream- Hey I'm fat, not pregnant!. The time in college I can attribute to one of those t-shirt dresses. I really liked mine and wore it often, until this guy in a stair well congratulated me on my pregnancy. Needless to say, the dress was never worn again!

You don't even need to be heavier for this to happen! I had an experience similar to the 2nd poster. I had a friend that had a very nice figure and someoen asked her if she was pregnant just because she was in the baby section of a store! People need to stop commenting on people. I couldn't imagine going up to some random person and saying something.

I actually had my MOM ask me last year if I was sure I wasn't pregnant! When I mentioned it to other people, they seemed to understand why. I laughed it off at the time, but actually started worrying & took a pregnancy test just to make sure(I wasn't pregnant). It seemed the weight I had gained was most noticeably in my tummy. I've since lost some weight...

I had it happen to me in a HOSPITAL! I was wearing a sweatshirt and pajama pants (b/c I was sick), and I was kind of waddling, b/c the infection was, well, down there, and it hurt. And when I walked in, the person at check-in asked if I was in labor!!! At that time, I probably weighed 125 lbs and had, underneath my clothes, an entirely flat stomach!

me too!

This happened to me in high school. I was wearing huge pants for my size, as well as a lager company shirt- b/c i hadent done any laundry and needed blac pants at work. (they were smooshy pants, they make a "swoosh- swoosh" when you walk ;)
I was helping her and she looked at me and asked when i was due.
I looked at her and said "Im not".
Now i didnt even remotely work in a store that sells baby stuff- i was selling FISH at a PETSTORE! LOL

This happened to me before and not even in a baby-related context. I was at a fancy piazza cafe in Rome on a date with a rather hot fellow. The waiter came over and was like, "Congratulations! Wonderful!" and made a big deal out of my expected bambino. I was so mortified because I did have quite a gut from all the pizza, gelato and Peroni I had been having. Aaaanyway, my date was so funny - started rubbing my tummy and saying how thrilled we were. It was a running gag for a long time.

What I'm trying to say is, don't let it get you down. People can be pretty dense sometimes.

No I am actually not pregnant

I too have had this happen on a bus one time. I was so embarrassed that I actually made up a date. I was crushed and went home and cried. You would think that would have been enough to get me to lose the weight.

Why haven't people learned to keep their mouths shut if they are not 100% positive that someone is pregnant. Everyone has heard a million stories about this. I would never ask someone when they are due unless they already told me they were pregnant.
So this acutally happended to me too. I was at work and one of my clients asked if I was pregnant. I just gave her a dirty look and told her no, do I look pregnant?! She tried to cover by saying that I was walking like I was. Whatever. People just don't think before they speak sometimes.....

I worry all the time that I look pregnant (I carry a lot of weight in my stomach). It is emarrassing, but I have to face the fact that I do look it and not chastise people for asking.

It obvious bothers most the people on this thread- that is why we are here, to lose this weight once and for all.

count me in too. I generally suck my tummy in during the day. I just caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror today and I know I looked pregnant. I work in an OB/GYN office and I see pregnant women everyday. I know better then to say anything. It doesn't help I have little to no boobs. I always felt alot more confident about my body image when I actually was pregnant because I felt I could let it all hang out since I had a dam good reason:)

op here...

while i can appreciate your words of concern, i am quite sure that it is simply the shape i am in right now...i was hospitalized for a short time this past winter for some digestive troubles and they put me through every test available to diagnose the cause-including x-rays, ultra-sound, cat scan, mri. thanks for posting your cautionary story.

Why do people think cause you are in a baby store that you are buying for yourself. Dah! I've worked in the grocery business for years and never ever would insult anyone that way. People need to think more before they speak.

I think we all need to wear a T-shirt that says: I'm fat not pregnant next time we go into a baby store lol.

just the opposite now...

I was recently at my dh reunion, a picnic, a smart idea at that- not some stuffy formal dance...bring family and actually meet them... anyhow...
I have a 2 yr old son and he likes to wander and there were 2 other moms in the same general area following younger toddlers... I made some comment about how hard it is to enjoy a party or function (adult talk) when all you get to do is follow the toddler- and they both made a beeline for each other and started talking-ignoring me... they were both pregnant and somehow knew I wasn't. Yippppeeeee! I am still 35lbs over goal... but still...
