How much weight gain during PMS?

I just recently started with PeerTrainer in the last 3 weeks. I have been working out consistently and watching what I am eating more than ever. I am sad to report there has been no change in my weight at all since I started logging. It is that time of the month and I feel bloated. I was hoping maybe that was the reason I haven't seen any change. How much extra weight can one carry during that time of the month?

2-3 lbs

The time of the month adds 2-3 lbs for a day or two for me. It's less if I do some intensive aerobic workouts to get the water weight down. It's hard to ignore the extra pounds, but that's what I try to do.

I can gain up to 5 lbs but its b/c i am a little slack with my diet at this time- having maybe 2 serving of chips in 1 sitting and not doing cardio like i should.
However, if i decrease my salt, increase my water and walk more, i see 2-3 lbs max!
Good luck- and remember, its only temporary ;)

I'm not really sure, but, my boobs get like a cup size bigger almost! (And for those who think that'd be a bonus - the skin doesn't stretch or anything, so realy, it's just super-painful!) I hate the bloat!!

If I'm not careful with my salt intake - I can put on up to 5 pounds. When I was on the pill, it was worse.

OP Here

I am big on using lots of salt and pepper with my breakfast and dinner. Guess that is somethign I should really learn to cut down on. Thanks for all of your help. I feel like I put on between 2-5lbs each month. My breast get really sore and bloated too. Maybe I'd be better off not weighing myself that week.

I just want to add in - from when I started PEERtrainer to when I started losing weight was 3 months!! It was VERY frusterating! But now I'm down 2-3 sizes, and I look better than I thought I could, so, stick with it and keep making small improvements, and the weight will come off!

If you have more to lose, and you've been eating badly and/or not exercising at all, you can jump-start the weight loss, but, if you've generally eaten well and exercised somewhat, and have less to lose, it'll take some very fine tuning to get there.

Bloat

I gain 5 pounds every time I have PMS. Water + huge huge huge appetite hahaha. I think I'm lucky it stops at 5 pounds.

I seriously want to remedy it though. I mean, water retention might be alright, but huge appetite? Strange.

Its kind of wierd but I like to weigh myself during that time and then the week after because although I know why I have the gain it gives me a sense of accomplishment when I see the loss the next week....even if it is false

I lose weight during PMS. It is very strange. I plateau in the middle of my cycle and then it all starts coming off in the 10 days before my period. But my boobs go up a cup size. Really.. my body is crazy.

I used to get really upset around my period because I would gain 3-5 lbs and think I'd gained weight permanently. With support, I've come to realize it's temporary and after a few days , I'm back down to where I was.

I put on 8 pounds of water weight some months, which my doctor says is the upper limit of "normal." i can't tolerate salt in my food at all the rest of the month, but right before my period I crave it, so there's no mystery about how I manage to retain that water.

My question is, why fight it? Clearly, my body needs the salt and/or water at this time of month. I know it will go away in a few days, so I just roll with it.

I can put on anywhere from 3-6 lbs. from about 4 days before my period until about 2 days after my period... so for about 9-10 days my weight is not accurate, but I've learned to keep track of when it's coming and not let it upset me. I continue to eat normally and workout so I know that it's not normal weight gain, just period weight. That's what keeps me sane. I don't eat extra food, or "bad" food, I just go on about my daily routine.

period weight gain

I'm really glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem...I also gain about 4lbs during my period. I guess I just have to accept it but it's so hard, I mean I don't want to accept being bloated and uncomfortable 25% of the time, you know? I still exercise and eat extremely healthy, but nothing seems to work for me...

I am in agreement

I have the exact same problem. I even eat healthy and exercise, i.e., run 5 times a week and still have the 5 pound weight gain. What makes it worse is that when I run I feel like that something within me is restricting my speed and I am carry extra weight. I hate it but I love to run, so despite this I continue my routine.

Why do we want/need to eat more before our periods? Why do we need to inflate with several lbs. of water? Anyone know the science around this?

PMS Weight Gain

I was SO thankful to read the responses to PMS weight gain. A bunch of my boyfriend and my friends are doing a "biggest loser" competition. I'm 5'8" and started at 151 back in the beginning of January. Two weeks ago I weighed in at 139 and was feeling great! But then last night I was 146!!! I was a mess! I cried for hours. It's about 3 days before my period but I had no idea water weight gain could be that significant. My pants are still fitting better than ever so I'm hoping it is just the water weight! Thank you!

Day 2 TOM and I am up 3 lbs compared to this time last week - I think most of it is just PMS bloat but also the days before I always crave salty foods and have an insatiable appetite so I might have actually gained some of it.
I heard the endless hunger is due to low levels of seratonin which makes you unhappy/grumpy (and eating naturally increases saratonin/makes you feel good).

I feel terrible this month - have not slept enough, have eaten too much, been mostly dehydrated and now with PMS have gained about 7lbs which hopefully will mostly disappear when my period is over in a few days. It's a difficult downward spiral isn't it sometimes. I think it's the body's way of telling you to keep an eye on yourself or you'll suffer after! xx

up to 5 lbs for me too but I have to admit that I am guilty of giving in to the cravings too so that definitely contributes. Like other's said, I CRAVE salty things that time of the month so I'm sure I add more water weight gain than is really necessary.

I can gain up to 8-10 lbs during that time. It use to freak me out when I got on the scale, but after seeing it routinely during the 2nd or 3rd week of every month, then back to normal after period ends, I just count it as part of my "norm". That's why I weight myself only once a month now, around the 1st.

Every Wednesday I record my measurements (thighs, waist, hips, and calves) and my weight. I put these numbers in a % body fat software I have on my computer to keep track of my progress. Well, for three weeks, I have steadily been losing fat and gaining muscle. Until.....this Wednesday! I'm about to start my period and I gained 3 pounds. I was so disappointed and bummed out. I came home from the gym mad at my husband because he's a man and its easy for them to keep weight off. So I guess I said all that to say this...I appreciate all the postings. They really encouraged me. My weight gain is only temporary. Comes with the territory of being a woman.

I still haven't budged from my 140 pound frame but have dropped dress sizes
and inches. Hence I have decreased my body fat percentage. I would say that along with getting up on the scale also keep a notebook with your measurements it helps :).

Weight gain during period - miserable

I also lose weight around 10 days before my period is due - which is great - but then when I am 2 days away from my period I start to gain and keep the weight for the duration of my menstrual cycle (3-4 days). I think I must gain around 3-4llbs each month during my cycle and my clothes fit badly :( It sucks to be a woman when we have to put up with this. My energy levels flunk completely and every morning I wake up I literally feel like I have had 10 rounds in the ring! I cannot even talk because it is too much effort to move my lips to make nay sounds..I mean...seriously that is something! I suffer for 3 days like that. I cannot even be bothered to cook, clean or even leave the house some months! I hate this and have tried different remedies and diets - all without luck. I have 3 days off work some months because I just cannot motivate myself to get myself there and function while I am there - I am a nurse so it is really hard to keep up. I also gorge myself with chocolate and Burger Kings etc...I never normally eat Burger King! I am very emotional during my period too and at times I feel like I could just kill someone (of course I wouldn't). I work out at the gym 4-5 times a week but when I have my period I cannot manage 1 day a week! I am considering a hysterectomy but I don't know whether that is the answer?

I also have been working out at the gym 4 -5 times a week for over an hour a time and have toned dramatically but I cannot seem to shift all the weight from my tummy! I am not fat but do have a tummy! I hate this and I do 100 sit ups on the ball and 50 side crunches every time at the gym, so I am a little peed off that the weight isn't coming off there so quickly! I do still have my chocolate and crisps and we eat out at the Spanish tapas every now and then...but these eating patterns i had before and i was slimmer then! I cannot understand that, when I am exercising more today than I ever have I am not losing the weight! I was skinnier when I was eating everything I wanted and just swimming! I always have this battle with my weight. People, say I am petite and slim and I suppose I am compared to many women so I should be happy...and my partner loves my body - he must comment on it 5 times a day! But I just want to be slightly thinner and try so hard! I am 5ft 3" and weight about 9.5 stone (but that is mostly muscle). I am a size 10-12.

so it seems that a lot of what i personally experience is common to womanhood in general but here are my specifics... for about 8 years now (i]ll be 21 soon) i've been trying to lose that last 5 - 10 pounds haha.. sad, i know..anyway.. this never ending goal has caused me to be somewhat neurotic about it at times (in theory sometimes more than in practice) soo please don't mind my rambling!.. anyway currently my goal is 132 by august 28th, and getting there, as usual.. is NOT so easy..

here's the deal..

last week i was 13.5ish (down from 142 a little over a mnth ago) but although ive been eating (somewhat) consistently, and exercising each day..burning probably an average of 6 - 700 calories 6 days a week, today I weighed 139.5!!! Today is 6/24 and I am due for my period 6/28. The weird thing is.. I'm not sure if this is pre menstrual weight because honestly I don't even feel bloated, and my "breasts" aren't sore just yet..I am experiencing some other wacko symptoms.. including some bad skin as of the past few days, and inappropriate crying episode (started crying yesterday in a new beginners pilates class simply because i was let down by its quality.. now THAT is sad/weird)... so is it possible that this IS in fact pre menstrual weight gain...despite the lack of the normal symptoms that accompany it?

I'm hoping it is and that after I get my period, and a week and a half has gone by i'll be less than my original (137.5), maybe even 136.5 when I weigh myself next...

Thoughts? Words of wisdom? blah, feeling disillusioned..

I am sleepy (10hr and im still exhausted), running on the treadmill when I normally can sprint no problem and I love it (the week before I feel like I am carrying a heavy backpack), and I eat like the world is coming to an end in one day I ate (bagel, burrito, taco, mac n cheese, cake, redbull, dr pepper, grilled chicked, hugh spinich salad) and I was still hungry. I also drank 90 ozs of water. I also gain about 3-4 pds and my knee hurts.

Wow 12:33 that's awful. I gain maybe 2 pounds if that. I can't imagine gaining 10 pounds just because of PMS. Are you drinking enough water every day of the month. It's usually water that we gain but we can only gain water if we don't drink enough. Try drinking more water, that might help with the 10 pound gain.

when is the actual "time of the month"

When people mention that they gain weight in one day, due to the "time of the month" are they referring to the time of thier actual period or is it during another time of the cycle?

I have working out more and really watching what I eat. This week I started a Boot Camp at my gym. I've been trying to also eat less grains and increase the amount of vegetables. This morning the scale was up 3 pounds. I can't really ever remeber such an increase in one day.

My weight goes up as much as 10 pounds during the first few days of my period, and actually, I think my record was 12 pounds - but that only happened once. For me, it's usually between 5 and 8 pounds at that time every month. It had me in tears at first, but honestly, it happens every single month at the same time, so I know to expect it. I am on Weight Watchers, and I weigh in every Wednesday night. When I'm starting my period and find my weight skyrocket a few days before that weigh-in, I just do my best to maintain my exercise regime and stay within the appropriate number of calories. Watching your salt intake is a biggie, too, because even if you aren't going through your period, you can be up as much as 5 pounds after a dinner of pizza, pasta, etc... I still haven't gotten entirely used to seeing my weight go so far up during menstruation, but at this point, I at least accept it and realize that it is not real weight. It also helps tremendously to know that this is a common problem for a lot of people!

PMS weight gain can be stressful when trying to lose weight

Over the weekend I knew I hadn't eaten over my caloric intake for the day but yet each day I gained one pound! I was so frustrated and then when my period started I was all happy realizing that was the reason for the extra weight. But now that it's here I thought the weight would go back to normal. I really hope that when my period ends is when I will see a change because I am so confused and frustrated right now. I work really hard and seeing that extra weight is really disappointing.

The appetite surge during PMS is CRAZY!!!

I was worried thinking that something was wrong with me I am usually very controlled and not hungry after I have already eaten. But this weekend I could not resist cake and ice cream! Also usually when people offer me food after I have already eaten I just say no thanks. But this weekend I was accepting extra food and eating snacks but still not going over my calories of course but still my appetite was out of control! But then when my period started it's like it just completely went away. I'm now 100% opposite and can go without eating the whole day if necessary! But of course the extra weight is still here and my belly looks slightly larger. I can't wait to see these menstrual pounds go! :o(

I just wanted to share something I found by accident. See I normally gain 5 pounds during my period. I also get moody and cry a lot. I crave sweets and cheese. I started today without any warning. I couldn't believe it. I had no cravings whatsoever, no pms. I had noticed that for a few days before.
I began eating a slice of fresh pineapple with my breakfast and if I tried eating sweets, I just didn't want them. I lost weight quickly because of this and the fact that it has vitamin b and c in it and an ingredient that is found in some diet pills. I was so excited to get on the scales, see I had lost 10 pounds, try on a pair of shorts that never fit and finally did. Then, the day went on I felt my stomach bloat up, I got on the scales gained the 5 pounds. Went to the bathroom, sure enough I started. The cramps aren't as bad though, actually they are barely noticeable. So I am praying it's the pineapple doing it. But just try it. Just make sure it's fresh pineapple and not canned. The canned doesn't help it's loaded with sugar.

whew!!! I feel a lot better too. None of my friends get PMS like I do, and the symptoms like weight gain and super increased appetite make me feel like something's wrong with me. I work out every day and eat very well, but still get huge bloating near PMS time which results in weight gain. Some good tips are to make sure you get 1200-1350 mg of calcium, as I think it does help. Try to eat light servings of starchy things like cereal, bread, pasta, potatoes to prevent suger deficit and to ward off bad, bad cravings. Even with those, I gain weight and feel like junk! Glad to know I'm not alone tho!

Reading everyone's comments made me feel so much better about myself. I have a horrible period every month (bad cramps, bloating, break outs, mood swings, the works!) The worst part about my period is that I gain tons of weight in what seems to be overnight. This month I gained about 10-11 pounds! I work out religiously everyday (twice a day) and I watch everything that I eat. I always get down to a new record weight, and then my period comes along and ruins it. Then I feel like I have to start all over again. I've been at a plateau for months, and It's hard to break it when I gain 10 pounds back every single month when I'm on my period. IT SUCKS!!!!!!!
