Are you a hungry beast during your period?

Does anyone else feel the constant urge to eat during "that time of the month"?
I'm really trying to drink my water and eat healthy, but I want to eat all day. I keep thinking of food!

Actually, mine is about a six days before I start...I swear I am like a cow grazing in the field. I can't get enough of anything that is put in front of me. I can eat all day long and it doesn't have to be junk food...it can be carrots or whatever...just food - in mouth - now! :) Luckily, the grazing only lasts one day for me!! Whew!

I had a post about this very thing, called "It ain't all in your mind." It had some great scientific articles about why we feel as hungry as we do during our periods and why we crave salty and sweet foods. Do a search for the thread, you should find it.
:)
Hang in there, it feels like forever but just listen to your body, and do the best you can. It's only a few days to a week out of the month- your body will re-regulate itself.

sometime during the week before, that's when I'm munching all the time. I don't really care- it's just a bit of a reminder that oh yeah, about to menstruate.

The few days before and the first 2 days in, I run the risk of turning into an eating machine! And no matter what I eat, it never seems satisfying, I always want more.

This thread, and the one you bumped, couldn't have come at a better time! I'm expecting my period any day and I find myself sorely tempted to rip into a bag of chips and go nuts. Luckily I have been able to resist...like one other poster, all of my symptoms appear before my period. Including the snappiness and short temper. Yesterday morning I was ragging at my kids and one of my teens said, "god, did you get your period yet?" I had to laugh!

Usually I'm ambivalent about chocolate but I turn into the poster child for PMS and can't get enough of it. That and pasta with red sauce. And it may sound like an excuse but the first few days I get awful cramps which food actually helps. The funny thing is, my waist swells 1-2" but I only put on 1 pound during. Then right after, I drop the pound and my waist shrinks 1-2" below what it was when I started. TMI, maybe. The real beast in me comes out the week after, when I am all skinny (for me) and have gotten used to eating like a pig (because it actually does help me). But yeah, that week after my period, that's dangerous!

yeah, i am definitely affected a week or so before my period. i have been able to gain minimal control over it by telling myself that this is a mode of preperation for becoming pregnant, and since i am not going to become pregnent, i do not need to feed the urge (literally). this sometimes helps, but in most cases of logic versus hormones, usually the hormones win!

I am actually completely unaffected by my period. I think I eat even less the week before and during. Maybe I'm one of the lucky few, I don't know! I'm grateful though!

PMS driven hunger!!

I feel with PMS I have a wild driven hunger that is both physical & mental!!! These feelings are for REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am a slim person & eat healthy & count calories. But with PMS I feel like a crezy person ~ These hormones & chemicals are really strong, and every month it is a little bit different too. Ahhhh!! :0)

Your period is not preparation for pregnancy. Its the entire opposite. Its your body getting rid of the uterine lining specifically because you aren't pregnant, and can't get pregnant for at least a week if you're healthy and normal. It seriously concerns me that a woman would think her period is pregnancy prep. Hungry if you were ovulating sure, but bleeding??

I'm ravenous the few days before. I just go with it. I don't eat junk, but if I want a bigger portion of steak, or two cups of soup instead one, then I eat it.

Actually, PP, the poster said that the week prior to her period is when she gets ravenous and she views it as preparation for pregnancy. She did not say that it was her period that was prep for pregnancy. I could see her logic. If you think about the time between ovulation and your period, it is rather like what it will be like when you are pregnant. You've ovulated and the egg is trying to attach. If you're pregnant, the egg does attach and you start to get hungry all the time. I can see the logic. No need to be scolding someone when 1) the post was made 4 years ago and 2) you haven't fully read what was said.

again, the week before your period is not prep for getting pregnant unless you are pregnant. There's no hormones prepping for anything. If an egg isn't implanted *by the week before* (on a normal 28 day cycle) there's no prepping for pregnancy. Prepping happens at ovulation, which is not the week before your period on a normal schedule.

There's way too many women who don't understand their cycle. And when it's the kind of thing that can mean you're bringing a kid in the world you're not ready for, or aborting one you don't want, I consider that appalling.

On the bright side, your body burns more calories at this time, so as long as you don't totally overdo it, you can eat more and not do any real damage.

*cough* getting back on topic: I just had my period this past week, and my food cravings still haven't gone away. I think it's because I also haven't been getting to bed on time recently, which *never* helps with this sort of thing. Does anybody else have that particular problem? I stay asleep just fine, but dragging my butt off to bed in the first place is always the hard part.

Yes I turn into a hungry beast. But afterwards, I'm not that hungry so it seems to balance out for me.

If it isn't tied, nailed or glued down...

Dear Lord, I could eat the kitchen sink the first few days of my period... it is REALLY bad. It is only at night though. I mean during the days I am fine, but at night, those first few nights, I could eat an enitre week's worth of food in a night.

PP- How did aborting a child you dont want have anything to do with the dicussion. From what I read they were talking about the same week you were, and even if they were a week wrong so what? I dont understand how that makes anyone not ready to bring a kid into the world. I dont understand your logic

grazing

I get it about a week beforehand too- I feel all bloated and the only thing that seems to releive it is more food which ends up making me fatter for about two weeks- the week before my period then the week of. So I really only have about two and a half weeks a month that I eat right. It's awful!!
