What on earth is the Special K Challenge?

Is this some joke created by the marketing team at Kellogg?

haha....no, my friend tried it...you eat 1 cup of special k w/ 2/3 cup skim milk for two meals w/ fruit, eat your 3rd meal as you normally would and you can snack on fruits/veggies...they say you can lose 6 lbs in 2 weeks...my friend did....very odd and prob not healthy though!

Yes, it's pretty much a joke - it's basically cutting out two meals (which, on a diet, would still probably add up to close to 1000 calories) and replace them with about a total of 300-400 calories or so, with no fats or proteins to keep you full - you'll definitely lose, b/c it's about a 600-calorie deficit per day from a dieter, and way more than that for the average person (and each 3600 calorie deficit is a pound lost), plus it's a good jump-start diet, but, you'll never be full and it's unlikely that you'll get all the vitamins/minerals/protein that you need to stay healthy!

It's fine for the short term. If you have a special occasion or something, but I would follow boiled chicken/veggie diet too.

It's just like the Slimfast plan really - eat a vitamin-fortified product for 2 out of 3 meals. I'd be more likely to stick to it with cereal though because solid food feels more substantial. It's kind of filed in the back of my head as an option if I want to try something different for a while.

Anyone tried this more recently than 2006 when this thread was written? Have a wedding in 2 weeks and was thinking about it...I need something to kick me back into gear...the snacking has gotten out of control recently...

The special K challange will probably help you drop 6 or so pounds before the wedding if you stick to it. But as soon as you go back to regular food, you'll most likely put that weight right back on.

I'm trying a variation of this... I heard about it on TV and went to the grocery store to check it out, and it turns out that Special K isn't that much better than most of the whole grain cereals out there... I prefer Fiber One, Kashi GoLean, or South Beach Diet cereals. All three of those brands make cereals that contain 35% of your daily fiber needs, plus a significant amount of protein (8-10g per serving).

If you follow the plan loosely, and add in some healthy foods, it shouldn't be too bad. It forces you to get the fiber you need, and even if you only have the cereal for breakfast and a snack (like I do), you're already doing better than if you had eaten something not as healthy.
