I am an atheist so I rely on myself for help.

Don't subscribe to die hard religion. I rely on myself too.

i really think we should make an effort to NOT discuss religion / politics on this website. there is already so much "arguing" on some thread and i think this is opening up a can of worms that no one wants to witness. good luck in your pursuit of higher meaning.

Of course we can discuss religion and the power of faith. As long as we don't get into a "my God is better than yours" argument we are fine. The question was God's help, and relying on a higher power. Many people turn to higher powers for help. One of the great things about America is that we have the power to choose and be free, and we should be free to discuss that here.

In terms of dieting, turning to faith probably beats turning to food. God binge anyone?

I'm also a born again Christian and I find myself turning to God all the time. It does help and make me feel better when I pray.

Sure I ask God for help. I know I'm a happier more giving person when I feel healthy, and I feel more healthy when I make good food choices. I ask God to give me the wisdom to make good food choices, and the discipline to follow through.

I think praying for a good attitude and help to make good choices can really help. God answers prayer, it may not be the quick easy solution that would be the end to your weight issues, but keep praying and be specific and watch for answers. They will come in different big and small ways. God is using this struggle for you to learn from. You still have to do the work though :) God bless, I will pray for you also and add me to your prayer list too!

YES - all the time. Keep a journal and you will see how He answered your prayers!

8:04 - sometimes god answers prayers in the way you don't want him to. i could pray to lose weight without effort, but the answer would either be "no," or i'd end up with some horrible disease like tuberculosis or cancer that causes weight loss without effort. it doesn't mean god didn't answer my prayer. it just means i didn't get the answer i wanted.

sorry to get preachy (see different thread - ha ha). it's hard to keep praying for something that you want so badly, only to get the answer you don't want to hear. and i'm not referring to weight loss here exclusively, just other issues in general.

so - if you pray for something biblical that you long for, and really live the way you believe god wants you to live, but you don't get an answer....how long until you get tired of waiting and tired of praying? i know the sunday school answer of "you should never give up" or "well, adam and sarah prayed for X number of years for a baby...." blah blah blah. i'm not asking for the correct answer. i'm asking about reality here among other PTers.

and no i'm not talking about marriage or a baby, which i just realized this sounds like when i read over it again. but i'm sure there are others out there who have been in this situation with those issues.

Yes, I was a pastor's wife praying for the welfare of our church and the church fell apart... talk about a soul-shattering experience... talk about the collapse of faith... talk about playing 52-pick-up with my beliefs about God. It took about 15 years, but I found my answers in mysticism, or what I call 2-way prayer. I don't want to get more specific than that, but I truly believe that the kingdom is within. My heart goes out to all, including myself, who have prayed and found their answers in heartbreak.

Dear 10:02, this is 6:15. I'm not sure what you are apologizing for - I'm okay. I am, however concerned about 4:37. 4:37 is hurting regarding unanswered prayer, and yet received some terse comments about a slip-up over Abraham/Abram/Adam. Perhaps we should all tread a little more lightly on the issues of personal spirituality. Thanks for asking. No offense taken.

it's 4:37 - i had a good laugh over the slip-up, because i quickly saw the mistake after some sleep. i was obviously tired when i wrote it. people could have been nicer in their corrections, but i don't really care.

i know what you are talking about when you say watch what you pray for, i have seen it first hand. my friend and i have always been over weight . she has always been more religious than i and would pray to be thin. well her prayer was answered when she got cancer and went from 220 to 120 in a few short months. now she has to eat like a mad man to keep any weight on. this has scared to crap out of me and thrown me into a tail spin by seeing her do a complete turn around. you better believe that i now watch what i say. it isn't so much for weight loss anymore but to be healthy and to be guided on the choices i make .

God's Help

Weather you believe in God or not, we all need help. That is why we are all here in the first place right? Help can come in many shapes and sizes. Spirituality can be seen as many different things and many different ways. We all have one thing in commen here... we are trying to live healthier lifestyles and we are trying to loose weight.

I personally believe in Jesus Christ as my personal savior. I believe that he died on the cross for me and my sins. I personally pray to HIM about whatever may be weighing heavy upon my heart... including my health, weight, and life style that I am trying to change and make better. I know that what is not possible for me is possible for God. I do my best and he does the rest. Too bad I have not been doing my best lately. I have fallen off of the motivation wagon. I haven't eaten right or excercised regularly for six months now, and I have gain weight back because of it. Do I blame my God? No, I blame my lazy self. I pray daily and know that God hears all of my prayers no matter how small and mundain they may seem.

the Bible has given us a first hand account of how Jesus used prayer to help with a strict diet. Remember when he was in the wilderness and the Devil taunted him when he was starving and said "just turn the rocks into bread". He faught the temptation of food with prayer, so why not his followers.

Even for those who don't believe in God can still find inspiration beyond themselves that they look to, so don't feel ashamed when you find yourself searching for help outside of your own abilities.

God bless.

please. you could believe in the power of apples and pray to them, in all their glorious varieties, and get the same results as if praying to god. what about those who pray to allah, or buddha, or another god besides christ's alleged "father"? it's the belief, the faith that keeps people going, not who or what they are praying to. all the answers lie inside each of us.

i cannot stand it when people feel they can throw their religious views and calls for prayer onto me and into my world. who asked for your prayers? did god send you a card explaining that he had healed you? it's just a belief, not a fact. i happen to believe in the power of energy and nature, but i would not try to will someone else into following my path. i get a lot of people trying to persuade me to embrace god and i am offended by that intrusion. can't those who believe in god accept that not everyone who doesn't think like them is wrong? don't they choose to believe? don't i have a right to my choices, too?

sept14 10:10 - you said you cannot stand it when people throw their religious views on you. but if i understand peertrainer correctly, you entered a thread about asking god for help - you came looking for this. no one threw it on you. you didn't have to open the thread. when i see threads on things i disagree with, i just let them go without opening them. let people have their beliefs. you don't have to go snooping through threads you disagree with and start stirring up trouble.

i happen to agree with 11:09, and i loved the encouraging words from 1:04. i wonder, if we were here talking about our hindu beliefs, would other people come in and trash them? or would they be thrilled with the diversity and open-mindedness on peertrainer? it's funny how people can welcome outside opinions until those opinions are too christian for them.
