The 10-10-10- question

So I'm a big Oprah fan (no, this isn't an invitation to O-bash) and read an interesting article in this month's issue of O. Suzy Welch (I think that's Jack Welch's wife?) has a 10-10-10 method for making decisions. How am I going to feel in 10 minutes-10 days-10 months. I thought it was an interesting one. And useful for monitoring calorie intak / eating choices. How is this chocolate cake going to make me feel in 10 minutes time? And in 10 hours time, will I even remember it? And in 10 months time, if I keep making decisions to eat these things, how will I feel/look then? It's a holistic way of looking at any decision, weighing up short-term gratification versus long-term consequences. Thought I'd share and see what others think of the idea.

I don't even need to think of the 10 months or 10 days. Just thinking how chocolate will make me feel in 10 minutes is enough of a rational argument to not eat it. Because, in 10 minutes I will feel just as I did before eating it: nothing. So may as well pretend I've already eaten it and move on :)

I like that, because how often do I think of 10 months down the road when there is a forkfull of brownie a la mode zooming towards my mouth? 10-10-10 a very nice mantra...10-10-10
thanks for sharing

i like that idea b/c I often eat emotionally to try to fill some gap w/out regarding the consequences...but this is a quick and easy way to check myself- thanks!

hate to be a downer, but...

Isn't this the opposite of "living in the moment", which Oprah also advocates? In my life, sometimes I think I've made all decisions for the distant future (ie, WAY too much time in school and work, for instance) and never allow myself to do things for the 10 minute period (except eat!)
How to find a realistic balance?

I like that advice 10-10-10 but unfortunately I live in the moment to much when it comes to food
