how many steps does a pedometer count?

Is a "step" counted by a pedometer literally one foot forward and then weight down on it OR is it the whole stride cycle with one foot forward, the other foot forward, and back to the start?

Thanks! Sorry I'm so ignorant.

well, i googled for the info and the 3 sites i looked at said the stride / step length is determined by how you adjust/set you pedometer. as i understand it, each person can set their pedometer how it works best for them.

I had a pedometer about 5 years ago that clipped to my waistband. The counter was clearly triggered by the forward movement of my leg - it causes the gadget to shift up, and that counts the step. My silly test: if you take it in your hand and shake it up and down, it'll count each upward motion as a step.

It counts each stride by each leg.
