why are people obsessed with their dogs?

I'm not a pet person. I don't get it.

My pets make me laugh constantly, such clowns. They always improve my mood, even if I am just thinking of them. They give lots of love. They are always happy to see me. Makes it a joy to nurture and care for them. I love to train them in obedience and tricks and play. I live in the country and enjoy a wide variety of pets.

Also, to 1:34 good link.

i'm obsessed w/ my cat-she's my buddy and i'm constantly looking to her to make me smile, relax, slow down etc. i think people w/ dogs are the same way-it's company and friendship.

although-i don't get why dogs have become a fashion accessory-why many people carry little dogs around in designer bags is beyond me. i find that annoying!

I am a dog person, but I don't know that I'm obsessed.

I can only speak for myself but here's why I LOVE my dogs:
...I have no children, so they are my substitute children
...they are ALWAYS happy to see you, whether you've been gone a week or 10 minutes
...they NEVER talk back or question anything you say
...they're just so darn cute (I have 2 big Labs)
...they NEVER judge you based on how you look or if you do something stupid
...they can be very comical and make you laugh when you really need it
...they will sit and listen to your problems or just keep you company
...they're good protection to take on walks
...they depend on me for everything - which makes me feel important
...nice to have around the house when my husband is gone
...My husband also uses them for hunting (ducks, pheasants, geese)

OK. So maybe I am a little obsessed... but you should see all of the albums I have filled with their pictures!

frankly, i could ask the same question about people and their children- i have never wanted children. but, to answer your question, i can count on my dogs and cats to lie beside me and keep me warm on cool nights (free heat !), to just be with me when i am sad, to enjoy my energy-filled moments and run in the yard, and to always greet me when i come home. there is an unspoken appreciation for each other that goes beyond verbal/written description.

- my dog teaches me a lot about myself
- only one willing to run with me whether it is 100 degrees, pouring rain or 10 degrees
- keeps my feet warm on cold winter nights
- doesn't hold a grudge

Research also shows that petting animals can lower blood pressure. Also, have you ever seen how children, the handicapped and elderly people respond to animals? I have even known of disabled children learning how to walk on their own after riding horses.

I agree with you op!!! I am not a pet person either. To be perfectly honest, it wouldn't be so bad but I CANNOT handle the hair (even if they don't shed, still gross to me) and most of all the poop and pee. I hate walking around and finding dog poop in my yard or on the sidewalk because some owner doesn't follow the rules. My inlaws have a dog and a cat and no matter what they do there is always that gross animal smell in their home. To each their own, but keep the dogs and cats out of my yard!!!

I gotta tell you, there are no end to the amount of times my dog has made me feel better after a bad day- you come home from a bad day, you flop down on the sofa, and next thing you know there's a wet nose in your face, and it's saying "you know what would make you feel better? A walk!" the funny thing is, it doesn't matter if it's snowing or raining or 120 degrees in the shade, He's always right. Taking the dog for a walk always puts me in a good mood.

If you don't get it, that's cool. To each his or her own.

I will say this- I love MY dog. Not a huge fan of other people's dogs. Especially the ones that take a dump in my yard. I clean up after my dog...

yeah, i don't like poop in the yard any more than i like the odor of a used diaper in a public restroom. i know, i know, there is no where else to put it, but i think it's gross just the same.

I didn't like the hair thing either, and but I had to let it go, becuse my dogs are so adorable and cuddly, and very very funny. When my stepson was young, he was very needy because of abandonment issues, and I didn't seem to ever be able to give him enough affection. Having puppies and dogs that he was a part of choosing, helped fill the "affection gap". Eventually, he became more independent because of it.

They give you all the good parts of normal human interaction, and none of the bad. They don't judge, they don't pick fights, they don't have unrealistic expectations. They love unconditionally, have unbelievably distinct personalities, keep you laughing, I could go on forever. When I was in an extremely depressive state (like...extremely!) my psychiatrist advised my mother to get me a puppy. I was having shock therapy - not fun, believe me - three times a week. But when I got home from the hospital each day feeling like death, there my puppy was, ready to lick my face and curl up on my chest to sleep.

" IF''

If you can start the day without caffein
If you can get going without pep pills,
If you can always be cheerful, ignoring people with your troubles,
If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,
If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,
If you can overlook it when those that love you take it out on you when,
through no fault of your, something goes wrong,
If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,
If you can ignore a friends limited education and never correct him,
If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,
If you can face the world without deceit,
If you can conquer tension without medical help,
If you can relax without liquor, or drink,
If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,
If you can say honestly that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed, colour, religion, or politics

Then my friends you are almost as good as a dog :)

I cam't understand why people don't like animals, but people that generally don't like animals, never had animals while they grew up.

To the second 2:24pm poster:

I THINK THAT MOST PEOPLE HATE: when a dog takes a poo and their owner isn't responsible enough to pick it up - your anger should be towards the owner .... NOT THE DOG!

Think of it this way: If a young child is dirty and smelly...it is the fault of the parent for not keeping the child clean or teaching the child about proper hygene. Blaming the child is stupid....same goes for dogs. If a dog is dirty and smelly..it is the fault of the owner. Blaming the dog is stupid.

Dogs don't cry in the middle of a movie, dinner or make a tantrum in the middle of a store because they can't get what they want.

Some benefits of having pets:
- Pets encourage you to get out and exercise
- Pets can help with social support
- Pets can improve mood
- Pets can control and/or reduce blood pressure
- Pets stave off loneliness and provide unconditional love
- Pets can reduce stress - sometimes more than people

Above are some benefits of having a pet.

One of my reasons, I can't have children so my dog is my child...I love him more than some people love their human children I am sure.

I'll admit it...I'm obsessed!

I work at a dog kennel that is 15 acres out in the country. It is heaven for dogs and dog lovers! We have HUGE fenced off play groups where we put a few compatible dogs together to play. We have baby pools and a tank for swimming and lots of fun things! The best part is getting to know all the dogs. You have to really learn their personalities to make sure 2 dogs can play together and boy do they have different personalities! I LOVE THEM! If I could I would own a mansion in the country and rescue every dog I could....

maybe a reason people who interact with animals all the time have relational problems with other people is because they see what unconditional love and acceptance are really like through the animals they care for. in comparison, other people just don't measure up anymore...

i have intimacy issues with people because it's hard to tactfully say "get away from me ! i don't want to talk or listen right now ! just let me sit here and be !" animals seem to sense those feelings and don't have any grudges associated with that acceptance. i don't care waht you want to call it, my pets just call it love.

I will admit that I have some intimacy issues with people. It stems from abuse of trust from previous relationships. So, life experience has caused it. Although I have a wonderful marriage and lot of wonderful family and friends in my life , these relationships didn't just happen. Quality relationships with people require a lot of effort, though it is worth it. However there are a lot of people who use and abuse and take advantage of the people they relate with. My availability comes to a close real fast for those people. I approach people with a lot more caution than I do animals.

If you live near Austin, TX then send your dog on over to our kennel! lol

I will admit after only being there for a year it does make you a little dog crazy and less enthusiastic about human relationships. I know for me after a day at school and dealing with all the idiots in the world, it's relaxing to go to work and know nothing is expected of you from the animals, they're there to make you laugh and have a good time.

9:13 poster you are completely right! Dogs do teach you about unconditional love and kindness so when I interact with people, I tend to surrond myself only with those who hold a high enough standard. I feel it's possible to be the type of person a dog would be and why settle for anything less? Meaningless relationships just aren't part of my agenda.

By the way I'm taking this opportunity to rave about my 3 dogs and cat...
I have a crazy husky/shepherd mix named Duke, another jumpy mix who looks like scooby doo named Duchess, a black flat-coat retriever (rare breed) that was a hurricane Katrina refugee at the kennel which i named Sadie, and a goofball cat I rescued from Utah named Jitters.
I come home from college every weekend just to see them...

Groucho Marx said:

"Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read."

Okay - this has nothing to do with the topic, but I thought it was funny and reading about dogs made me think of it.

And to the person who said, "I love MY dog" and not necessarily other people's dogs - - that's how I feel about kids. I love MY kids, but most other people's kids bother me. And that goes back to the comment from someone else who said, "blame the parents, not the kids."

Research shows that having a pet can lower blood pressure. Dogs can give you another reason to get off the couch and go outside and MOVE. They offer unconditional love (where else are you likely to find that?) Willing to eat the pizza crust you're trying to avoid. All they ask for in return is a pat on the head and a bowl of food. Best return on investment human beings are EVER likely to find.

I have had my dog longer than I have had my husband, my child, and my house. She goes everywhere with me in the house so is a constant companion. Recently when I had surgery and was bedbound, she laid by my side the whole time. She always greets me when I come home and never complains.

I think that people with attachment issues and problems interacting with other people are drawn to animals because they can find a non-threatening, non-judgemental interaction and connection with the animals that they so rarely find in other people. It is amazing how interactions with animals can bring out people who are disabled or have suffered emotional trauma.

For me, I love my pets because:
No matter how bad my day is I can go home and always expect both of them at the door to greet me with a huge celebration as if seeing me is the best part of their day.
If I'm sick or sad I have two guaranteed cuddle buddies (who are for added benefit all warm and soft).
And I guarantee there's not a person on the face of the earth who could get me to play tug-o-war at 6am. (That happened this morning.)

I should say off the bat that I love dogs, not so much smaller dogs but bigger ones, although there is a small dog next door who every time I see I feel happy, that being said I am now going to state my opinion. And this is JUST MY OPINION, its not meant to cause a feud. Personally I think people have milked the system when it comes to companion dogs, or pets for that matter. I'm fine with seeing eye, seizure and other real companion dogs going places even when in training I'm not okay with what is going on. Its seems it has gotten out of hand, quite frankly I don't want to go into an upscale clothing shop and try on clothes that has dog hair on it or see fur on the ground. I'm sick to death of seeing people driving with their dogs in their frigging laps. It is a danger to other drivers as well as the driver themselves and this should be illegal. If so many people can't cope being in society without having to bring their pets with them everywhere we have a much bigger problem. I do believe that some people really have a problem and if those people benefit from a true companion dog great but I also know that this is being milked and perfectly socially accepted people use this as an excuse to bring their dogs with them everywhere. Does anyone else feel this way? I had a friend who was rear ended at 50 mph because the lady who hit her was feeding her dog that was sitting on her lap, just had to have the dog on her lap because it made her feel safer. I guess she didn't think of the risk of holding a dog while operating a car as a safety hazard. Needless to say my friend suffers from a lot of problems now and this lady's dog was killed, internal bleeding from being crushed into the steering wheel. I see this all the time.

For the poster considering getting a pet.

Best wishes to you. I am a pet-aholic. Dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, horses, chickens, ferrets. I need to have a pet zoo! Or, do I already?

One thing that I have found is that when I get a new breed or type of pet, I research on the internet for its temperament history and requirements and learn all about it. This way I am a good and responsible 'mommie.'

Not all breeds are the same. Some need only to be a lap dog (chihuahua, boston terrier). Others require miles of exercise (rodesian ridgeback) and others require mental challenge (herding dogs). So, take the time to match your personality with the type of pet you choose.

And learn to train your pet. A pet that knows its boundaries, is a much happier pet. Be consistent, have a routine for them, use consistent commmands. If you keep your pet in the house, crate train them. All the info you need is on the internet. Plus the pet stores are very helpful.

You will be amazed at how happy both you and your pet will be. You will be amazed at how well they communicate once you learn each others' "language."

The effort makes for an awesome relationship and experience with your pet. Others will appreciate it, too.

Please consider pet adoption (for dogs or cats) rather than purchasing one at a pet store. Many dogs from pet stores come from "puppy mills" where the females spend their lives having litter after litter and the health of the animals there and the puppies they produce is often poor. Millions of animals die every year because homes can not be found for them. There are some great pets who just need a home.

i can't agree more!!! adoption from a shelter is beneficial for all involved!!! to get used to a dog, you could even volunteer a couple times and spend play time with and walk many dogs to help find the right match for you and your environment. please consider this option!!

When I was in the last three months of writing up my PhD research, it was a very harrowing time, with long long long hours. I had some wonderful support from my partner, friends, and family - but the truth is, nothing compared to the support I have from Wiki my dog. He was there with me from 7am to midnight, night after night after night. My partner took a photo of me holding my first bound copy of my thesis - and who was sitting enthusiastically at my side - Wiki of course. In my acknowledgments in my thesis I included an acknowledgment to Wiki for 'being there for the long haul' - people thought it was really funny, but it was also absolutely true.

I've really enjoyed reading all of the positive posts about the many many benefits of having a dog, some of your posts have made me laugh, and all of the positive ones have made me smile. Sometimes it can hurt to be an animal lover - to see animals abandoned, or in pain, or not loved like they should be. But the joys of appreciating animals far far far outweighs any sadness. The pleasure I get from walking down the street and getting to pat a cat, or see a dog being taken out for a walk - every single day of my life, almost without exception - I get some additional pleasure in life from my love of animals. I'm so grateful that my mum was an animal lover, and so that we had the pleasure of always having a pet or three and having that appreciation of animals instilled in us through animal loving throughout our childhood.

It's put a smile on my face just thinking about animals....

children are not f*****g animals

i have a strong opinion about this subject probably due to my personal circumstances.I cannot stand it when people compare children to animals, the reason that animals are so diiferent from people in good ways is because of exactly that they are different from people, and in alot of bad ways too, just an example a twelve year old person that poops on your dining room floor people would be appalled and when a dog does it "they dont know any better" the same goes for humping each other and pillows toys ect., and chewing things up and jumping up on guests.i personally cannot stand the smell of a house with animals there is hair everywhere you sit and on everything you own and they stink like dogs and your bedsheet couches furniture ect,all of it stinks, not to mention the many many times they pee and poop on the floor and over time not even a steam cleaner helps you just have to replace the carpet.i have a mother in law whom me and my two (beautiful daughters) live with and i have to take care of her 4 dogs all week while she is working and sometimes on the weekends when she goes away and i have to do it because i live here and cant efford my own place right now.she if obsessed with her dogs and animals she has 4 pitbulls and a jack russell terrier three cats 3 ducks and she is always talking about getting more animalsi think the reason why she loves them so much and considers them great bleesings is because she is never here to have to feed or walk them break them up when they are fighting/humping each other and best of all endlessly scrubbing the carpet from fecies and urine she hasnt given them a bath in over a year(remember they are inside dogs)now all of them have something wrong with their skin and scratch and itch constanly bite at themselves and bleed all over the house floor, furniture ect. she acts as if her dogs are her children which she has her own children and they have young children that she spends no time with acts like they are so bothersome and such a burden she greets her dogs at the door with treats and walks right by her grandchildren.i would have to agree that being obsessed with animals can create a great distance with people, unless maybe the person was already distant and unable to relate to people and thats why they confide in animals either way anybody who thinks that a animal of any kind is equall to a child would be very wrong and needs to go to school, church whatever because the value of human life is far mor important than that of and animals and children are alot more special than animals afterall nobodys pets will be making the future decisions for the world, plus pople are able to understand life, appriciate life, make decisions and think for themselves so a persons feelings are alot easier hurt than that of a dog.and this is why they shouldnt live in our houses, sleep in our beds, and eat at the table.(yes she lets one of her dogs sit in the dining room chair at the dinner table while we all eat)i dont hate animals but i dont want them in my life and think if someone wants to have so many pets they should stay home to take care of them or hire someone.and if your gonna have a bunch of nasty dogs that poop on the floor, put them outside it is very unsanitary especially in a house with young children who spend most of their time on the floor.AND FOR ALL OF YOU WHO DO COMPARE CHILDREN TO PETS YOU IF YOU THINK YOUR PETS ARE SO SPECIAL AND BRING YOU SO MUCH JOY IMAGINE THAT TIMES ABOUT 100 CAUSE THATS WHAT CHILDREN DO,AND FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO CANT HAVE CHILDREN THEN THAT IS THE NEXT BEST THING BUT DONT EVER COMPARE THE LOVE OF AN ANIMAL TO THE LOVE OF A CHILD THERE IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAN AND BEAST AS IT SAYS IN THE BIBLE!!!!

1 - Just because it is written in the bible does not make it the truth or even fact for that matter.
2 - Pets bring a joy into people's lives, DO NOT belittle the experience, nobody puts down you having kids
3 - I will treat my dog and cat like the princesses that they are, and give them everything that I can
4 - If you ever came into MY house you and your kids would fall way below my pets in the pecking order

Unconditional Love

To answer the OP's question... that's it.

I am a pet owner and a mother. I would never put my pet above my kids, but I have to admit, I don't get the same level of unconditional love from my kids.

lol - that's a lot of pent up anger if you're digging up nearly 2 y/o threads! Wow.

Had to chuckle at 3:07's tip #5...even in print, how you 'say' it is still relevant!

I used to have pets - loved them to death! Now I have kids (and no pets) - love them to death. I find them strikingly similar in terms of the love, joy, and frustration they bring. Kids just require bigger picture parenting for a lot longer and they're a lot more expensive, but I only had to clean up their poop for 2 years. Of course, I could put the pets in the basement when they annoyed me... :)

I'm "obsessed" with my dog because I couldn't have children. I had a miscarriage at 5 months, then another two years later at two months and they were completely devastating. I was suicidal and it's a loss I wouldn't wish in my worst enemy. After years of fertility treatments and adoption nightmares, I had to give up. Getting a dog was the only way I had another being, small and cuddly, to nurture that was even close to having a baby. So before anyone ever judges us "obsessed" doggie owners, stop and think and be objective to why we might be that way. Thanks for letting me share.

Wow, thanks for putting this all in perspective and for sharing with us.

I would classify myself as a cat person. I don't feel worthy/capable enough for a dog. It's that unconditional love that they have in abundance that just makes me feel so guilty, like I'm getting way too good of a deal in the relationship. I don't think there's enough poo for me to clean up that would even the deal.
That's why I've got the cats, as opposed to the kids, there are way more cons than pro's for me to be bringing one into the world today. That's JUST me though!

In addition to the answers provided by the above posters, I'm "obsessed" with my dog, and love animals in general, because unlike humans they are forever pure. It is very fulfilling for me to be able to provide a nice little world/life for an innocent creature.

I think it is wonderful to see so many caring people, whether it is for children or animals or both. As with anything, we all have our varying degrees of affection, obsessed or otherwise.

why i'm "obsessed" w. my dog

after recently realizing that i am probably "obsessed" with my dog, i googled it, and this page came up. i thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone's comments.
why am i obsessed with MY dog??
1. unconditional love, baby!!
2. she makes me laugh, like crazy, w. her silly facial expressions, and especially the way she puts her paw out to touch my hand when she wants me to pet her!
3. she does not become resentful when i yell at her, for eating the garbage or pooping on the rug.
4. she does not stay angry at me
5. she understands when "its not a good time" to be all up in my face! LOL
6. she keeps me warm in the night
7. she is non-judgmental
8. she is happy to just get fed at all, doesn't matter when or what it is!! (ok, that was a little lie, i have to mix her dry food with some kind of meat, or she won't eat it)
9. she is a great (did i say GREAT?) ice-breaker!
10. children love to come over my house because of her
11. she is content w. whatever amount of love i give her at the moment: she is good for either a pat on the head or full-force cuddling and kissing mode.
12. when she starts snoring in the night and i tell her to shut up, she doesnt get mad at me, but actually STOPS snoring!!
13. when i go away for the day and she is home alone, i actually cant wait to get home so i can see HER!!
14. she is cute
15. she NEVER makes me mad on purpose: she is not hateful, angry, spiteful, resentful, jealous, mean, etc
16. people are SOOO much nicer to me when i am walking down the street w. my dog than if i am just walking alone--- if you dont believe me, TRY IT!! i swear its true!
17. she is always up for a good hug, and lets me know everyday she loves me
18. she truly has become my :"best friend!"

No more dogs everywhere! This has to STOP!

I don't care if people are obssessed with their dogs, but the fact that they want to shove their dog up my ass everywhere I go, it's just wrong.
I"M SEVERELY ALLERGIC to dogs, and fleas. Dog owners bring their dogs to Restaurants, which is disgusting. I don't want to eat near any animals. They bring them to Malls, and my throat starts closing up.

Dog owners are needy, and obviously have low self esteem to constantly require the attention of their dog, but they are bullies in FORCING everybody else to ACCEPT their dogs.

The barking is the most annoying thing I have ever experienced. It's a Nuissance of great proportions.

Let's have some respect for others. We all know you don't care about human beings as you care about dogs, but think about it, how would you like an Anaconda owner to bring his snake next to you at a restaurant or a mall?

Grow the fuck up. Leave your dog at home!

Empowering People to be happy is the best way

Empowering those sad souls who lack self esteem, confidence and social skills would be better than giving them a dog, who falsely is believed to "love' you when they would ran out the door if you left it opened, and never come back. They're only there cuz you feed them. A cat on the other hand, as independent and self-sufficient intelligent animal that it is, truly loves you.

People need to stop depending on their dog for company and start bonding with human beings. It is so much more rewarding if you volunteer at the Big Brothers/Big Sisters organizations.

Dog owners in the U.S. spend millions of dollars on their animals, instead of loving other human beings and helping ppl.
What a pathetic bunch of selfish yet needy humans.

Dogs are stupid and you need to see a psychologist

They're not happy to see you, they have just learned you FEED THEM.
They don't judge you because they are not capable of 'reasoning" (I can though, lol) You lack self esteem and confidence. Work on that!
They "make you feel important" you say. Those are deep issues. Why don't you do something 'valuable' for humanity? so you DO feel important for real.
Dogs are ANIMALS! They are not listening to 'your problems'.

I'm sorry to say, you and all the dog obssessed people suffer severe lack of self-esteem, confidence and desperately need psychological help.

So many children without parents in this world all the money you spend in your dogs could be helping, real human beings, yet you selfishly spend tremendously in animals who can't even drive you to the hospital if you needed help. Children and human beings are worth so much more!
Pathetic the way dog owners view their dogs. Makes me SICK!

I love my dogs. I love my cats, too. I've been raised around cats and dogs literally my whole life. (My parents are pet people, too.) I could probably give *at least* 20 reason why any person should own a dog. If I had the time, I may even be able to get up to 100 reason why it's a good idea...

That being said, in my experience, if someone is not a pet person, then they just are not a pet person and no matter what I (or anyone else) has to say on the matter, it's very unlikely to change.

Woof

1:07 yes. I have to admit the last three postings were my work. I read a few postings and thought the tone could be a little lighter. I am a "cat person" but I delight in dogs too....and the people who love them.

We all have our shortcomings. We all irritate each other sometimes. Sometimes we all need a little nudge to remember life is far too short and if you work to look at the positive you are far more likely to get there. So the videos were just a little nudge...and a present too.

Happy Holidaze everyone. Woof!

why are people obsessed with their dogs?

I have noticed that people "obsessed" with dogs, what I call "dog freaks" are misfits that normal human beings don't want to have anything to do with. The only humans that become involved with dog freaks are other dog freaks or people with serious personality disorders. There is something badly wrong with a person who actually walks around behind a filthy dog and reaches down and picks up its warm excrement in their hands! Only a very sick person would want to do such a thing! It has gotten to the point that I don't want to shake hands with anyone because they may have been picking up dog crap -- and you KNOW they don't wash their hands afterwards. Another thing is people who sleep with dogs -- everyone KNOWS dog freaks are into more than just "sleeping" when they take their 4-legged crap machines into their beds even if it is illegal in most states.
