Shoulds vs Wants

How do you feel about doing things you "should" do versus things you WANT to do? For example, you're invited to a party for a coworker. You put yourself down as a "maybe," but when the party day arrives, you don't want to set foot outside the house. Are you driven by guilt, or are you able to shrug it off and say "life is too short to do things you don't want to"...?

for social engagements, it's almost always a WANT thing for me. i feel like i SHOULD clean my car, exercise every day, not eat cake for lunch, brush my teeth & shower even when i'm really sick...but for me, going out to a party/gathering when i'm not in the mood is not ideal for anyone involved.

i have felt like you in the past. i should go (but really don't want to...) i have since decided that socially, i only do things i want to. on evites, i never reply "maybe" if the answer's really "no". saying "no" from the get-go has really releved me of any guilt. all the host wants to know is how much food and drink to provide... she won't be upset unless it feels like you blew her off! good luck.
