Exercises to increase core strength?

I've just atared the the couch to 5k program and I'd like add some excercises to increase the stregnth of my torso - abs back and obliques. I'm looking for a set of excercies that can be done on a playing field after I've finished my run - so I'd prefer ones that don't require extra gear. Any Ideas where I should look?

Thanks!

Pilates has some basic exercises that you do just on a mat that are extremely effective. I learned most of them through physical therapy and can definitely atest that they are incredibly effective and I did not need extra equipment. They key though is to ensure that your form is excellent and that you are engaging the deep abdominal muscles. I would seriously consider one or two sessions with an instructor or a sports thereapist and tell them exactly what you said here. Having my therapist there to correct my form in the beginning and help me find my center was invaluable and once I found it I fell into it naturally and no longer require assistance.

My aerobic routine would not be nearly as effective without the strength, stability and good posture I have gained through core strengthening and I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly you can build a strong core and how much it will enhance your running.

I am including a link to the mayo clinic site for core strongth. There are quite a few here. Happy Running!
