when do people notice weight loss

I have been exercising on and off. Weight loss achieved is not impressive but can feel that some clothes are hanging a bit looser.

It feels great to have someone notice the teeny weeny bit of weight loss.

In general, how much weight is lost for others to notice a change visibly? Share your experiences to encourage one another

I had to lose 10lbs before anyone noticed, but now that I've lost over 15lbs, everyone is noticing.

10 plus

i've lost 12 lbs and people don't say "wow you look like you've lost weight." they say, "wow you like great." while the latter is indeed a compliment, i'd like to hear the "weight loss" comment.

guess i'll have to keep working at it.

10 lbs

I don't check my scale that often but I've noticed that 10 lbs equals a pant size for me. So when my pants start getting lose (or when I can fit into my "skinny" jeans!) I know that I've lost a big chunk of weight.

However, I've started adding weight lifting to my workouts and when I visited my family last month, my sister asked me if I had been working out. She said that my arms looked really tone! Eventhough I've only lost 5 lbs so far, my muscle tone makes me look like I've lost even more!

who many lbs = a new dress size

just wondering, how many lbs does it take to go down a size in clothes? anyone know?

The poster above said 10lbs = one pants size for her...and I've found about the same. It depends on how you're built and how you gain weight, though - my shirt size hasn't changed even though I've lost 10 pounds and am wearing a size smaller pants. Also, for me, my pants and dresses tend to be the same size.

changing sizes

I know for myself - when I lose - it takes a lot - before I actually change sizes - mainly because I tend to lose first in my butt (and rarely does my stomach reduce until after I've reached the 20 lb mark). I wish the weight would come off evenly... *sigh*

Having a *relatively* small bumm and a big tummy doesn't help much in hearing compliments. People aren't checking me out down there. And just because my pants look baggy - I'm no-where close to being able to change sizes. (oh well)

I think it depends on your size to begin with. I have lost 36 pounds in the past 5 months and am finally getting the positive comments from people. I've gone down 2 pants sizes and feel like I'm close to the next size. But I started at 249 pounds. I pretty much feel like anything after this weight loss will be very noticeable.

Notice

I notice when I drop weight, is when I have to buy new undies. I dont notice my jeans as much, because they can just fit differently, but when my undies get big, and I buy a smaller size I know I have loss inches in my hips

Regarding pants size: It definitely depends on what weight you start at. I've read somewhere that if you are a "plus" size, it takes about 20 lbs. to go down one size. If you are a "regular" size, it's about 10 lbs. I have found both to be true in my case.

Right now I'm down 12 lbs. and people are noticing something is different, but most don't comment on weight - yet!

how many pounds equals one pants size?

based on my experience 5 pounds = 1 belt notch, and 8 pounds equals 1 pant size.

I find that I get comments not when I've reached a specific poundage, but, when I see people that I don't see regularly. The people that I see regularly mostly have not noticed at all (and I've lost almost 15% of my body weight), but people that I only see on occasion definitely almost always tell me that I look thinner!

I got "noticed" by people at about 15-20 lbs. people I haven't seen in a while are always shocked when they see me now and they comment first that my face is thinner. I have lost over 35 lbs. now and I have lost about 3 pants sizes. I have a large chest and have only gone down one shirt size b/c my breasts just don't want to lose with me! The best has been being able to get into my "skinny jeans" I have been holding onto for about 4 years now! now it's onto toning.... I need to firm up my tummy for swimsuit season

Noticing Weight Loss

I have lost 23 lbs and went from a size 12 to a size 6 and very few people have noticed (or have said anything). VERY FRUSTRATING!!!! I am not sure what it takes, but I have lost about 14%
of my body weight. I guess you have to look like you have an eating disorder for people to notice?

To the 4:41 poster; just because no one has said anything doesn't mean they haven't noticed. Trust me, going from a size 12 to a 6, someone's going to take notice.

I've found that some people don't like to mention when somebody else has lost weight because they're afraid of hurting the other person's feelings. You know, the whole, "you look great", "well are you telling me I looked like crap before" situation.

If you're talking about having to look anorexic in order to get noticed for being thin, well, then unfortunately I feel you're right. I am actually 100 lbs and a size 2 (sometimes a 0) and I rarely get comments about being thin.

Last time i lost weight (which i unfortunately was not capable of keeping off due to my lack of healthy eating habits), people noticed something was different but could never pin point it, but only after i lost 37....yes 37 pounds... did someone at work finally ask me if i lost weight. I was so excited that day. Since then, i have put on 20 lbs...and now i'm just waiting for 37 to come along again :)

I've lost about 25, and I've only had one comment from a friend about my losing weight. But I look in the mirror and love what I see, and that's enough for me :] When you're in an environment where you see the same people everyday - like me, I'm still at high school - it's just too hard for people to see gradual changes like weight loss, so you can't let it discourage you!

I'm similar to you, but for most people, it takes much more.

The taller you are, the more pounds you'll need to lose before going down a clothes size (I guess b/c the pounds are more spread out?) And, plus-sized clothes are made with bigger differences between sizes, so it takes longer then too.

I think the rule of thumb is around 15lbs for regular-sized clothes, and 25 for plus-sized clothes. But, that's just a rule of thumb.

My family finally said something when I lost 15 pounds. The people at work haven't said a word. But they see me every day and probably haven't noticed. But I just saw some friends that I haven't seen in a year and they all gushed about my appearance. That was very motivating!

3:55, it sounds to me like they're not trying to patronize you, more like they've noticed you looking better, but didn't know how to bring it up (but maybe I had to be there)! you sound a little skeptical of your own weight loss.

I've lost 10 lbs, gone from a sometimes-13 pant size to a sometimes-8. Though its happened over the course of 6 months, so no one's mentioned anything. My mother has been trying extra hard to fatten me up with cookies, though. that's gotta mean something!

I started out at almost 350 lbs and a very tight size 32W. I'm now at 300 & a loose size 26W (but 24W is still too tight to wear without splitting seams), and went down one size just about every 15-17 lbs. People first noticed my face was thinner and my bust was getting smaller. And I did have to buy new bras first. I've gone progressively from a 54DDD to a 46DD, and the current bras are now a bit too big. I still feel like I have a really big belly, but it has gotten smaller. It's just that with the bust getting smaller too, the belly shows up more. Anyway, it'll all work out in the end. Getting rid of the rest of the excess weight is about another year and a half journey at least.

I started out at 370.. Im now 187.. it took a little while for people to notice on the first batch of weight. I lost about 30 pounds and my clothes were fitting looser and my face was losing some of its tripple chin... now Im losing the last 70. I have taken off 32 .. I have 40 some to go.. people are notiicing like crazy.. I even have male and female customers making comments to me.. I feel amazing and Im ready to get rid of the last pounds for good.. I have kept teh first 165pounds off for 6 years.. it takes time to lose the weight and for people to notice, but your doing it for you.. to live a longer , healthier life.. trust me even if people are not saying they are noticing.. I bet your confidence is shining through you now.. you hold yourself differently.. at least Im speaking from experience on my journey..

good luck to all of you.. believe in yourself.. you will cross the finish line.

When I was 300 lbs everybody always said things like "she has such a beautiful face" (or lovely hair, beautiful hands, etc). They never said anything overtly negative about my weight, just how beautiful certain parts were. And taht left the unsaid "fat thing" hanging in the air.

Now that I am 210 lbs (still have about 75 lbs to go), people are saying really mean things. Like my ex-husband's mother (grandmother to my kids, so we see her a lot). She says things like "boy you're starting to look really old lately, with wrinkles around your eyes and wiggly skin under your chin you look older than me". And my ex asked the kids "what happened to your mom's boobs? She used to have a gorgeous rack and now they're gone." What a rude thing to say to your own kids about any woman's bust, but especially their mom! Yes, I lost a lot of boobage, but I also lost a lot of belly and thigh and butt and triple chins. You'd think somebody would say something nice.

when do people start to notice weight loss

I've been one to lose and gain weight like crazy. I've lost and unfortunately gained back as much as 70 pounds. When I'm up to a size 18, very observant people notice when I lose 10 to 12 pounds. More start to notice at 20 and after 30 the compliments become a daily occurrence. The heavier you are the more weight loss it seems to take to change a pant or dress size. At a size 18 it takes almost 20 pounds to get down to a 16, but then it's usually 10 or 12 pounds per size.

It took 40lbs for anyone to mention anything to me. But on the other hand, I'm sequestered in a tiny office, and see only 1 other person on a day-to-day basis. I don't get out much, and have no close family/friends, so there's a very small pool of individuals that might notice, if they're having a particularly observant day.

my weight has fluctuated 10-15 pounds the past few years, between 158 and 168ish but i've had compliments when i'm around 160. BUT the heaviest i've been at 175, i've had compliments that i look thinner, too.. idk maybe my friends are just nice but i think when guys notice, that's when it really shows.. at least for me. my hot college football player friend said i was looking good and i just glowed for the following week. i think that's definitely one of the best parts of losing weight - when others take notice and make it a point to compliment.

Fat Face!

The first thing that my friends and family noticed after my first 4 weeks was my face. I lost 17 lbs in the first 4 weeks and with it went my double chin. My face went from pumpkin shape to a much slimmer look.

This is where most people make their initial noticeable changes. I read an article that says this is the case because your head has more blood flow than any part of the human anatomy. Makes sense eh?

It depends, its different for different people. I think the quicker you lose weight, the more dramatic it looks so people may notice more! (Although i'm not recommending loseing weight too quickly!) I've lost almost 3 stone and people still havn't noticed and I wasn't that big to begin with, which is quite worrying.

I think it depends also on your body type and how the weight is distributed before people notice... and it depends on the kinds of people you hope to notice! Sometimes folks are not comfortable mentioning weight unless it's really dramatic.

A friend I hadn't seen in a year kept saying that I had lost so much weight. In reality, I hadn't really lost much weight (maybe a few lbs) but I have been working out (weights/cardio/yoga) regularly, so I must have significantly changed my body shape. She couldn't believe that I didn't lose weight because I guess I looked so different. For me it goes to show that the scale does not provide the whole picture when it comes to fitness!

On the original topic, after I lost about 5 lbs people were noticing and making comments. But it's probably my body type and the clothes I was wearing.

For those of you who said that "no one noticed", I have a theory because I have felt this way in situations where I wanted to compliment someone... in these times of such extreme illness, esp. cancer, I think that people just want to play it "safe" and not say anything for fear that someone is actually losing weight due to illness. It's human nature to want to be noticed and complimented, especially after working so hard at being a better you - I'd be the first to want a pat on the back. One of my goals is to work really hard at focusing on doing this for me and no one else.

People didn't notice I was losing weight til I'd lost 37 lbs. And then they'd say things like "you look different today" but no mention of actually noticing weight loss. But then I started out at 344 and they didn't start making those kinds of comments until I was down to 307.

Now I'm at 296 and people are saying things like "your face looks slimmer".

So, I guess it all depends on how much overweight you are to begin with.
