Is giving your body a shock once in a while in terms of diet or exercise good?

I have been doing erratic strength exercises, but I have been doing it in spurts and it is really making a difference. For example, I did 230 pushups a few weeks ago during a week where I did about 600 total. My wife noticed a definite difference. Now a group member of mine said that "shocks" like this are good. Makes sense- are there any sort of "one day" events that I can do to mix things up?

I like to have one day where I do a "double" workout - like, I normally spend an hour in the gym but I do two hours instead. A nice long hike is even more effective because it's automatically at a fat-burning pace...which overlaps with another suggestion - just try something new that isn't part of your usual workout, like rent a canoe for an hour or two (double duty - your wife might like being rowed around a lake!).

There's also a dieting strategy where you have one "treat meal" a week, where you don't count calories or anything. The theory is that your cravings won't get too crazy if you have a weekly indulgence. Unfortunately a lot of people, either intentionally or not, have a binge day instead of a single meal, and this can often undo all the good you've accomplished in the previous week.
