I followed a macrobiotic diet for several years. It is basically vegetarian (fish broth is occasionally used) but no dairy. It is meant to balance foods between yin and yang, a fundamental of Chinese medicine. Foods are descrbed as either yin (cold) or yang (warm). Most fruits and vegetables are very yin, meat is very yang. All foods fall somewhere along the continuim of yin and yang. The object, generally, is to eat foods that balance. It is also used in illness; eat more warming foods for yin conditions, more cooling foods for yang conditions. In Chinese medicine, EVERYTHING is described as yin or yang. This really isn't that foreign to us, we have soup when we have a cold.

Macrobiotics is very healthy. This time of year it would emphasize lots of soups and vegetable or bean stews. Some argue it is low in protein. You can certainly get enough protein through beans but you need to know what you are doing.
