tree nut allergies

We found out the hard way this weekend that my 6 1/2 year old is allergic to tree nuts. He has a doctor's appointment this Friday and so for now we are just really checking labels and making sure he doesn't eat anything with cashews, almonds, pecans or walnuts. My question is as follows: is there anyone out there who has dealt with this personally, especially with their kids? He has been eating granola bars for years, but when I checked the label, it said it was made in a plant that may contain traces of tree nuts. I don't know what he can have or can't have anymore! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am also allergic to walnuts. You need to be very vigilant as far as reading labels goes, many foods are even packaged using the same equipment as tree nut products, some that seem so unrelated.
I keep benadryl on hand always, in case I start to have a reaction to something, I can delay the reaction with the benadryl until I decide if I need medical attention or not.
Latex allergies are also sometimes linked to tree nut allergies, so be cautious with your child when it comes to that as well.
