Why do carbs fill you up so much more than protein?

I know low carb diets work but I was wondering why carbs make you feel full. It doesn't matter how much protein I eat, I'm still left hungry an hour later but a good bowl of pasta can last me 8 hours. Really, it can last me that long. What gives?

I don't digest grains well and so if I eat a lot of pasta or bread, I feel full for hours on end- but that's not a good thing. Might be that your body just doesn't handle the grains as well as the protien. Going without food for 8 hours while awake isn't healthy anyways.

well if your carbs have a bit of fiber in them that is what will keep you full for hours. fiber expands when it hits the liquid in our stomach/intestines so we stay full till it goes through.

Do you have any other symptoms

Have you noticed any symptoms of gastrointestinal distress. Usually you will feel fuller with protein because it takes longer to digest it therefore your blood sugar stays level. Carbs usually don't keep you feeling full because they are the quickest to digest especially refined sugar. If there are any other symptoms of distress after eating you might consider seeing your doctor or at least calling a hotline, there are nurse hotlines you can call if you are experiencing any medical problems. This might be a metabolic problem. Have you lost a large amount of weight or gained a large amount of weight in a short period of time. Do you feel tired a lot of the day. Do you have any swelling in your arms, legs , or neck. I say neck because that is where your thyroid gland is. Do you have less than 3 BMs in a week or more than 3 in one day? Do you have pale, fatty, or black BM's? These are all signs of digestive problems.

WOW. Carbs only last about 2 hours for me. But if I add some protein, like a grilled chicken breast or cod fillet, then I am good for hours.
