How much water should I drink per day?

Hi,
How much water should I aim to drink each day? What about on days when I do/ don't do cardio? Do drinks other than straight water count towards this e.g. tea, coffee, soft drinks, gin, etc? (I'm joking about the gin of course...)
I'm a bit confused as I've read a few conflicting opinions on this. What do people think I should follow?

i say drink water when you are thirsty! drink water when you get a craving for something bad (often we confuse thirst with hunger!). Aim for a minimum of 64 oz of water a day-there are so many different numbers circulating around, it's hard to know the exact number you need, but if we really pay attention to our bodies then we should get enough. I think you can count herbal teas as well as they don't have calories or caffine that can dehydrate you. if you don't like the taste of water alone, try adding a lemon or a lime to it, or drink soda water.

What I usually do, is drink water until my urine runs clear...I usually drink about 1.5 to 2 L per day.

Where's the woman who always posts "search previous threads first" when you need her? Usually that comment annoys me but for once we're on a topic that has been beaten to death quite a few times before this, with some very helpful and well-researched information on what qualifies as a "water equivalent".

what is the harm in asking the same question? the people who comprise this community keep changing and, naturally, some questions will come up repeatedly. why would that bother anyone? I really don't get it!

64 oz is good for one day - or more if you can take it
