Is salsa a vegetable?

I know chips and salsa have the potential to be very unhealthy. But if you do eat it, is salsa a vegetable? It is based on tomatoes, right? Or is counting salsa as a vegetable similar to counting ice cream as dairy?

I would say salsa is a veggie. You can make it from scrach, and just use tomatos, pepers, onions, and whatever else then you will control all of the added stuff.

Also, don't forget that salsa is not limited to "chips and..." I put it in eggs, I put it in veggie burritos, I put it on peas and corn.... Fresh homemade salsa is the ultimate versatile seasoning as well as a great way to make sure you get tomatos in your diet!

a nice alternative to corn chips is baked pita bread. just slice the rounds into wedges and bake.

I agree that the homemade salsa would count... also there are some really simple recipes out there. The one I used uses tomatillos as well as tomatoes and a little lime juice and that's basically it. The tomatillos are sweet/tart and so they add a different flavor. Also, I used mine to cook chicken and it's quite good. Good luck!
