Pickles

Just wondering if anyone knows why pickled gherkins contain no calories? I looked at the pickle jar today, and they say the calorie content is zero. Is the rest just fibre or what? Are there any other foods that have zero calories (but also with no artificial sweetners)?

In this case zero = less than 1. Gherkins are small cucumbers pickled in vinegar -- not _many_ calories there, but if you ate the whole jar you would definitely be eating some calories. Cukes hardly have any calories raw....

A long time ago, I read that cucumbers are ~95% water. I think celery and some lettuces are similar in that respect, but have more fiber. And as the above poster said, if you ate the whole jar, you would be consuming a few calories - literally a few, like 10. The drawback is the sodium content -- I love a good deli pickle but dear god, when I eat half of one I put on at least a pound of water weight the next morning.

OP here. Just had an "aha" moment. I've always wondered why peeps monitor their salt intake so carefully. I thought it was just because of blood pressure, and since mine is low, I've never worried about it. But of course, salt would make your body retain water. Duh!

Thanks :-))

PT heretic here -- I'm of the opinion that a pound of water weight is no big deal.
As it happens, gherkins tend to not be a high in salt -- there are differences between kosher dill (pickled in brine, which IS salt) and pickles in sweet vinegar.

The PT Heretic...

...knows WAY too much about her pickles!
Joking - it was actually interesting to learn the difference.
