this is so pathetic...

I dont even know why I'm posting this because it makes me feel so pathetic and I dont know what I want to get from you guys but I felt like I needed to vent somewhere. my roomate had a birthday recently and her cake was sitting in our fridge for about a week. She doesnt like cake and I think she forgot it was there so I took a few bites and threw it away so it wouldnt just rot. a few minutes ago I actually took it out of the garbage and ate the entire thing. I took it out of the garbage!! I ate it like there was no tomorrow... I dont know what triggered this binge and it makes me feel so out of control. Any advice would be appreciated.

Deep breath

Have a glass of water and plan three ways that you will be mindful about your health and eating choices this next week. Think of three healthy rewards: sparkling water with fresh lime, a walk every day at lunch, stretching each night before going to bed. etc.

Don't beat yourself up about the cake. You aren't the first person to do this, you won't be the last. Instead just use the way you are feeling to plan some healthier changes this week.

Good luck!

A while ago I had got some peanut butter fudge in the mail from an aunt, and it wasn't even very good, but I was eating lots and lots of it any way. I have huge issues with throwing food out, but I finally got up the nerve and did it. And as I threw it out, I made sure it dumped out of the bag and got good and mixed up with the other trash in the can because I know exactly how you're feeling - I've pulled stuff out of the trash way too many times.

Roommates can be torture - they bring all sorts of things into the house that you wouldn't have around otherwise. Hang in there! Do a cleansing this week - eat only fresh food (no prepackaged stuff) and no sugar. It'll make the icky feeling go away, and you'll feel proud of yourself, too. And just keep in mind that you're not alone - we're all here with you!

YOU are NOT alone

You can't have that relationship w/ food where it becomes your enemy -
first, forgive yourself. . . .we're all here for you and support you - and you know that you did the greatest thing by saying something

You are SO not alone. These things happen.

My suggestion is................ next time you throw it in the garbage, pour water over it before you throw it in the garbage. This will take care of any later urges.

This is not a big deal. Don't drive yourself crazy over it! Tomorrow's another day.

I can understand how you feel... I did something like that and felt disgusted with myself..
Next time make sure the cake is well mixed up with the other trash so that you cannot pick it back up
It takes a lot of courage to own up something like that.. I am proud of you

I just ate a half a bagel and threw the other half out, but threw it out in the bag, knowing in the back of my head that I could take it back out if I really wanted it. Well, I just took it out of the bag and threw it to the bottom of the garbage after reading this - now I can't take it out later! Thank you!

Try pouring vinegar or salt all over the food that you don't want to eat. That way, there will be no possible way of salvaging it!

Do you watch Sex & the City? Miranda had a similar issue - she threw it away - but then was tempted to eat it out of the trash - she ended up pouring dishsoap all over it so that she wouldn't eat it!!

I've been there.

Hang in!!!!

I did something like that a few months ago at 3am. I took several bites and felt grossed out so I threw it in the garbage knowing even before I put it in there that I really wanted to just eat the whole thing, I took it out and had one more bite and rationalized to myself that there wasn't much left and I should just finish it instead of wasting it. I got so disgusted with myself I washed it down the garbage disposal. We have all done it. Don't beat yourself up.
I think sometimes we try to figure out whats wrong with us that we would do such things. Heres a thought: maybe nothings wrong with us but the simple fact that in some people sugar has a chemical effect on our brains. That is why people get addicted to things, some its food, others booze and drugs or sex. I no longer keep anything in the house that I would do that with.

I'm with ya

As the others have said, you are not the first. I have this inner battle with myself all the time. God only knows how many times I've lost that battle and the food won. Keep on trying and don't get too down on yourself. Thanks for being so brave and telling us!

I've done that

With chips. I've bought a bag, eaten part, thrown it out in disgust, and then... rescued it.

If you throw out food like this again, you can "ruin" it by dumping water or soap on it or whatever.

Listen, I've also fished cigarette butts out of the garbage.

You are right in thinking that it's pathetic :) but you are certainly not alone, so don't beat yourself with self-disgust!

Last night, I did the tip on this page!! My fiance and I were starting to munch in the kitchen, and pulled out a very old bag of Golden Grahams. We both reached in, ate a bite, and realized they were stale. Then we both ate another bite. Then he said we should throw them out, so I threw the bag in the garbage. Then he said, half joking, "don't pull that bag back out and eat them!" It was so ironic, b/c he never says things like that, and there's this whole post that's been going on on here for the past few days! So I pulled out the bag and poured the cereal out into the garbage can. Crisis averted!! Thanks!

I do it, too. And like others said, I end up sabatoging the food to make sure I don't pull it out. I use salad dressing, since I can never find any I like and therfore have tons of icky ones around. :)

I'm sorry but I don't have a lot of sympathy. This is gross. Then again, I bite my toenails, and that's gross too. I guess we all engage in disgusting behavior.

Was it the 3 second rule?

Don't beat yourself up. We have all done the "3 second rule" once in our life. Some it the floor...Yours hit the trash. :)

Now, drink some water. Empty the fridge of any other temping goodies and take the trash out of the house. Far away from the house. :)

Tomorrow is a new day. There is nothing you can do now. Going to PeerTrainer was your way of calling yourself out on your behavior.

Good luck tomorrow.

Ha ha! You're not alone, my friend! Been there, done that.

Hasn't anyone ever heard of a Garbage Disposal? That's what I do so I don't revisit it after I've decided to get rid of it.

I've NEVER done this...but I can sympathize with you.

I liked the idea of pouring vinegar or even better (cleaning product) ... after spraying cleaning product on it...you couldn't possibly eat it anymore.

Couldn't hurt.

I guess someone needed to confess they bite their toenails...

Well, with the OP likely being gone, I can say that eating a cake out of the garbage IS pathetic, and disgusting. Anyone who's willing to eat a cake out of the garbage has a problem that they might want to get real help with.
