Don't eat nutrasweet, you want to have babies one day

In light of all the stuff I've seen posted here today, I see some discussion about myths and things. My mom said this to me 15 years ago, when the diet coke craze was in full effect. I don't have babies yet, but is there a link? Who knows, food for thought.

I don't have a link, just a little experience. In the 80's my health conscious mother thought nutrasweet/equal/sweet'nlow was a gift from god. We ate in on everything and in everything. For years. I can count on one finger the times I have unprotected sex. That was the time I got pregnant.

You should consult your doctor if you're that concerned.

i have to agree. although there is much information to be found on the internet, i would not turn to the masses here to debunk a health-related myth. myths are perpetuated by ignorance and hysteria and you will undoubtedly find a lot of both on most sites. best to consult a professional whose credentials you can review.

What a crock of shit. If doctors were the answer, I wouldn't be on this site. I've had to lose 50 pounds for the last 10 years and I've gotten more help on the internet than I've ever gotten from a doctor who gets me in and out within 10 minutes. The malpractice insurance makes it bad, the health insurance companies exacerbate the problem and telling me that I can't debunk a myth on the internet?

OP, to answer your question, I don't know but I've gotten intelligent, scientific based responses in this community. This was a good place to ask. Ignore the top 2 comments. Yes, if you have a doctor, get info from them but don't think that's the only place to get help.

okay, i'll trust a complete stranger to provide me valuable information concerning my potential pregnancy and possible complications with conceiving. please. advice is one thing, but for a definitive answer, consult someone you can find again if you need to.

The bottom line on Nutrasweet is that it remains very controversial. There is nothing to prove that it causes cancer and nothing that disproves a link. There has been a sharp rise in the incidence of brain tumors that was closely preceeded by the introduction of Nutrasweet (thanks almost entirely to Don Rumsfeld and his political connections). This does not mean there is a proven link, only that something has caused overall cancer rates to rise.

A good rule of thumb that I follow is to try natural foods as much as possible. It is hard, following a strict diet like that would be a fulll time job. A diet coke here and there probably is fine, a billion times a day is probably not.

Oh brother

My wife drank beverages made from Nutrasweet. We had our first child Oct. 9; she's very healthy and extremely cute!

Now the birth control (or getting off of it), that was another story altogether. My wife refuses to use any kind of hormonal birth control, and I don't blame her. I'd be more worried about that than Nutrasweet, although if you are pregnant, you should avoid artificial sweeteners for the most part in case your baby has a reaction to phenylalanine.

But really, you should consult your doctor about this.

And to 11:12 poster, if you're blaming doctors for why you're fat, then perhaps you need some counseling.

I agree that it's probably more worthwhile to take a long, hard look if you're using hormanal birth control. There are other options. I just think the potential risk is too great for me.

Nonsense

I've been a gallon-a-day (not literally, but I DO drink a lot) diet coke drinker for about 20 years now. I don't drink coffee, tea, juices, or milk at all, and not enough water (according to the 8 glasses a day crowd). But I ALWAYS have a glass of diet coke (caffeine free) at my elbow.

And I have a happy, healthy, 11 year old daughter. I conceived a mere 3 months after going off birth control pills, before my system was even "normal" again yet. Certainly no problems there! And I drank diet coke all through my pregnancy.

Well I guess you're the picture of perfect health drinking a gallon of diet coke a day. maybe it didn't effect your baby, but you don't question what else it might be doing to you? That's kind of gross.

you can find mothers from the 60's and 70's who will tell you that they smoked and drank throughout their pregnancies because "they didn't know better back then", and they may point out that their kids are normal. but, c'mon. is having your diet coke, all 8 glasses a day, really worth the risk? just think about it sensibly. it's not healthy to drink that much diet soda when you're NOT pregnant. and just because your child has not shown any signs of being affected by this gross consumption of diet soda/artificial sweetner, you're going to promote this as an acceptable beverage to other pregnant women? irresponsible, but not surprising given that you did not consider your own child's health-why would you care about strangers?

Tuesday, 11:43pm here

In no way, shape or form was I telling the OP or any other potential mothers that they should drink as much diet coke as I do.

What I DID do, was give anecdotal evidence that in MY case, even "gross consumption" of it did no harm.

In the sites that say aspartame is unsafe, causes cancer in rats, etc, if you read them carefully, they've given the rats doses of aspartame equivalent to something like 1,000 glasses of diet coke. At one time. Undiluted.

The OP's comment implied that ANY consumption of artificial sweeteners would prevent you from having a baby. THAT is clearly nonsense.

As for my own child's health, who says I "did not consider it"???? I had gestational diabetes, and had to be VERY careful of every carb and calorie I consumed. I also had to drink milk (I detest the stuff!) FOR MY BABY. I didn't smoke, drink or do drugs (not that I did any before or after my pregnancy, either) I followed ALL of my doc's instructions regarding eating, exercising, etc. INCLUDING that my diet coke drinking was FINE!!! That child was the centre of my universe from the moment I learned I was pregnant.

You have a LOT of nerve making a judgement on me on the basis of *ONE* anecdotal comment about *ONE* thing in my life.

describing how your own poor food/drink choices had no ill effects on your baby condones others' poor choices. it says, " hey, i did (this) and nothing bad happened. you could probably do it, too with no bad consequences."

Soda

I love diet coke...diet pepsi...any diet dr. pepper...any diet drink. But soda (in general) is bad news...even the non-diet stuff. One of the really bad things with soda is that it contains phosphoric acid...the acid leeches the calcium from your bones leaving you prone to osteoporosis. For those of you who are small framed, female, and caucasian (all 3 apply to myself)...my doctor recently informed me that I am high risk for osteoporosis anyways...so let the sodas be a treat...diet or not.

I'm a science dork...so for you all that want the scientific part of this claim...this site explains it pretty darn good in plain English (not jargon). :)
