Diet Soda linked to weight GAIN !

New study found no-cal sodas are linked to weight gain.

Before you go for a no-cal drink...THINK!!!

A new study from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, which studied 600 soda drinkers for up to EIGHT years, showed that those who drank one to two cans of regular soda per day became OBESE 33 percent of the time while the so-called diet drinkers became OBESE 54 percent of the time.

The study didn’t pinpoint the reason for the correlation, but it is thought that diet sodas may increase appetite.

studies like this have been going on for years. the research and the results are nothing new. it's surprising that the new diet-of-the-moment spreads so quickly, but facts like the ones linking diet soda and weight gain get swept under the carpet until someone rediscovers them or conducts a new study...only to be labled an alarmist or something like that and dismissed over and over again.

As a general rule I avoid things that are not "real" foods (I learned this from Dr Oz). Anything that is naturally occuring, I eat. Or smoke ;)

It's all variable by individual, though. I have a Diet Coke every day, and have had NO trouble losing weight. In fact, I reached my goal weight and then lost 10 pounds more.

and my grandmother smoked at least 10 cigarettes every day for over 60 years. still an unhealthy choice.

I have to wonder - is it the diet soda? Or is diet soda consumption a common symptom of a person who has food issues? Diet soda might not be the reason for the weight gain, merely an indicator of someone who is does not make good food choices (note: I'm not sticking up for diet soda here, just wondering if it's the primary cause or merely an indicator). What would be more interesting would be to have some of those particiapants stop drinking diet soda and then study those people to see if not drinking diet soda then corresponded to a weight loss in those individuals. I hope they follow up with that.

I drink one diet soda per day and have attained my goal weight and maintained it for years. I guess it depends on the person.

2:42- This isn't exactly scientific, but I've found that diet soda makes me really hungry if I drink too much- 1 can I'm fine, but at 2 cans I start getting the munchies, and 3 cans, look out- I feel like I haven't eaten in days.

This is all totally subjective. But, for me, I have eaten the same things on different days with the only difference being diet soda. On the soda days, I'm craving more food (salty or savory) like a junkie craves heroin. On the water days, I'm good- no real cravings.

my stats- male, 6'2", 206lbs, athletic.

any one else have this issue?

2:44 - Exactly. There is a correlation but there SO MANY other factors that deal with weight gain, it's ridiculous to pin it on diet soda, specificaly over 8 years. If you know anything about research and/or statistics you know how easy it is to manipulate them to say what you want. "90% of women who get pregnant while using a birth control pill also have toaster ovens in their houses. Ergo, if you own a toaster oven your birth control is more likely to be ineffective." Completely ridiculous.

I know there's a lot of studies out there like this, there was recently an article in a WW magazine. However, the reason they gave for the weight gain was that they found people were allowing themselves to eat things they normally wouldn't because they "saved" their calories by drinking diet soda. It wasn't necessarily anything in the soda that affected weight gain but a more mental issue. The take home from this is everything in moderation, and don't think just because you're eating something labeled "diet" that you can eat it in unlimited portions.

And PS...just drinking a diet soda will not make you get fat so don't freak out.

I do have that problem, but not with soda -- I have it with apples! Apparently any food that irritates your stomach can make you feel that way. It's probably more common for carbonation to be a problem than fruit, though.

What?

To the 8:00 poster, few people, unless accustomed to the flavour would actually say diet soda tastes good. Diet coke? Gag me it's like dishwater.

The study didn't say that fat people drink diet soda- it said that people who drink diet soda GAIN weight. SO, if they're likely not drinking diet soda for taste, they're doing it in an effort to reduce calories and thereby weight. Few people are going to try to lose weight by making the sole change of soda choice. So, that means that 54% of the people who were making some effort to control weight in fact gained weight.

Perhaps you should take a refresher course on analysis...

9:27 Perhaps you should rethink your premise.
People who are on a diet to lose weight ARE DRINKING DIET SODA.
Why are they on a diet. How come they didn't pick people from the general population? this study is floored!

again, they GAINED weight. Not they were fat, or that 54% of diet soda drinkers were fat. 54% of them GAINED wieght; according to the OP, BECAME obese. Most "diets" are not geared to make you GAIN weight. And lots of people follow a "diet" to maintain their weight. As a study is an inanimate object, I fail to see how it could possibly be "floored" unless you intended to mean "flawed" which woul clearly explain your failure to understand the English language, let alone a study on soda drinkers...

They didn't gain wieght from drinking the soda! they gained wirght from not staying on thier diet!

They probably had a false sense of security about how much they could eat because they were drinking the soda (i.e. "I'll have the double quarter pounder with cheese and a diet coke.") Based on the physical properties of the soda it is impossible that they gained weight from drinking it so the weight gain has to be with the person.

I've heard this from more than one person, diet sodas make some people hungry- there's no false sense of security, they just give me the munchies. very weird.

Right, but in that case the weight gain is from the munchies, still not the soda itself.

9:27 needs to check her OTHER premise, as well. I LOVE Diet Coke, can't stand the taste of regular Coke. Yes, I DO drink it for the taste.

Uh, the 9:27 said few people like the taste of diet coke- that means that some will. But I've never met a person myself who enjoyed their first sip of a diet soda. I can't stand the taste of aspartame. I can't eat sugar free jello, sugar free gum, or pretty much sugar free anything. I can taste the aspartame, I can taste the splenda, and it makes me wanna wretch...

What can make you unnecessarily hungry

In Chinese Medicine, there is a such a thing called 'Stomach Heat'. This is referring to anything that causes too much irritation and acidity in the stomach. (Not the same as a good amount of stomach acid that causes a good/healthy digestion) It can happen from overeating, eating too fast, eating heavy foods, eating under stress. When the food sits there, heat builds up and causes hunger. This can lead to a cycle of eating a full meal and then being hungry in a very short time.

The best thing to do is to eat smaller meals, at a slower pace, and in a calm environment.

Grehlin and Leptin are two hormones that cause hunger and satiety. They may be what are changing in amount when someone is saying they are feeling hungry too often, or have a lack of appetite.

If you are so against soda (diet or otherwise) why not start a new thread instead of kicking up old threads to repeat the same things over and over.
