haha! My work is the biggest temptation zone I face. Forget the coffe stand with super yummy brownies right downstairs, and you still have the candy, trail mix, and mini-chocolate bars that are always on the filing cabinet. Then there are all the well meaning coworkers who bring in doughnuts, cookies, brownies, etc. Oh, and don't forget all the parent-coworkers selling girlscout cookies and cookie dough and cheesecakes - yes, elementary kids are selling whole cheesecakes now!

It's a mine field!

My office is pretty terrible between birthday cakes and cookies in the kitchen. A while back I decided that I just wasn't going to eat anything free at work (unless it was exceptional in some way). No commercial cheesecake, no sheetcakes from the grocery store, no hershey kisses, etc. This is hard somedays, but actually a real good move for me in terms of cutting out the extra cals that sneak up on you.

Yes, constant barrage. There are only 20 people in the office, but every day, at least one is bound to bring in something homemade and leave it out in the kitchen or bring mini candy bars to a meeting or want to go out to lunch...

umm ... yeah! I work in a real estate office. There's always someone looking to win the favor of the realtors (title companies, insurance companies, mortgage companies, etc.) who brings in free goodies. I'm getting pretty good at ignoring these treats though!

I guess I'm in a really lucky situation! I work in a small office and everyone here is pretty health conscious. We even had a company wide fitness challenge! At staff meetings, yes we do have cakes and brownies, but people know to also get veggies, hummus, water, etc.

It tries to!

This week alone we got three deliveries of candy and cookies from vendors, someone made brownies, we ordered pizza for a coworkers birthday, someone brought in thin mints and there is a gumball machine full of peanut m-and-ms...and I only work with 5 other people!

I beat these temptations by having a drawer full of healthy snacks - dried fruit, nuts, fresh fruit, granola bars. If I need something sweet I reach for a few dried apricots - that usually does the trick.

My old workplace was terrible for weight, but so much fun to work (Allstate headquarters in Northbrook, IL). Tons of camaraderie. One group brought in a huge spread of food every single Thursday morning, and it was very unusual for a day to go by when no one brought in food.

My new workplace is much better; there's almost never free food around! At first, it was quite the adjustment. But now, I'm so much thinner!

It sure did today- staff meeting this morning:

"We're closing our doors as of today."

"We've been losing money for the last year."

Really? is that why we hired on 2 new staff just a month ago? Is that why we just dropped a bundle on a bunch of equipment we really didn't need?

So, I got laid off. No severance. Fantastic. Plus, My wife and I are having a baby. So that's even better.

So, yeah, my workplace is definitely sabotaging my diet.

Last poster, I'm so sorry to hear about your job. Everything happens for a reason?

My current job doesn't sabotage me at all, I work with family and we are all health concious.
However, in my last job we went out to lunch all the time, ate snacks together all day everyday... Needless to say I gained 20 pounds. Happy to say I lost it all too!

Wow, I didn't realize how lucky I am! We don't have a candy dish, or anyone with kids selling things, or anyone who bakes stuff for the office, or any birthday cakes for that matter. Sometimes when we're doing a big project the boss will buy us cupcakes and cookies but they're bakery-made so I usually enjoy the indulgence. I don't know if I could resist the temptations on a daily basis... I guess I would try to be like the poster who only indulges in "special" treats, not run-of-the-mill stuff.

BEFORE YOU INDULGE IN THE OFFICE TREATS THAT CO-WORKERS BRING IN, or any food for that matter, ASK YOURSELF, "HOW MANY HANDS HAVE COME INTO (oops!) contact with these snacks/baked goods/chips/m& m's? do i know for sure that the person who prepared this treat had clean hands and a clean food preparation area? am i sure that those who resist regular hand washing have not stuck their germy hands into this bowl? it may sound like i am a germ activist or something, but you may be surprised how much food you pass up when you ask yourself and then honestly answer these questions. i have not eaten soooo many calories that i would have ingestes without a second thought before...and then wondered why i am not losing as much as i think i should be, haha.

thankst 1:25 poster. I think that everytime something appears in the office kitchen. Besides, knowing how "clean" that place is anyway is enough to keep me out of it.

My workplace has lots of goodies that are hard to resist too. But I had a small victory today when I walked right past the donuts that a co-worker brought in. I am not going to waste all those calories!

Our office is food less, only the execs eat well. They have a cook to cook for them all day in the brand new kitchen. We aren't really allowed in there, the cook is old, russian and very grumpy. They only provide water, there is no slack allowed here, not even for bringing in your own goodies for the office. One Bday party a month allowed. I guess its good if you're on a diet, otherwise..... not so much!

Work = developing your tempation fighting muscles

poll answer - yes it tries, but I have turned the corner...
The snacks and treats and eating out and vending machines - My rule is never touch any of that stuff and only eat the healthy stuff I bring from home - ALWAYS - so in a strange way it actually helps make me tougher...
Now if I could only apply that willpower to social events on the weekends!

yes and no -
I work in a small physical therapy office and both my boss and many of our patients are triathletes and runners so they are a HUGE motivation to be fit/become active in the fitness community.
But we still have our fair share of the little old lady patients that bring us cookies/brownies etc.
I usually just stick them in my boss' bag to take home to his kids.

DEFINATELY!!!! I work with a bunch of guys that like to go out to breakfast about everyother week. Problem is that it isn't decided till we are already at work, so it's hard to plan it into the calories. Then we also have a command meeting once a month and the boss ALWAYS brings in either pizza or fried junk. Grrr... they know what I'm trying to do, yet they tempt me every chance they get. It's definately a pull on my resistance muscle.

i used to work for a renowned midwest boxed chocolate company, and it was pretty bad.... we had chocolates everywhere, if we wanted anything specific we could have our admins order it (there is departmental budget for chocolates). we also had test kitchen for our retail stores near by so they were always bring over cookies and such made with the candy to see which cookie base we liked better or if there should be more or less candy in the cookies. it was also a terrible place to work that drove you to eat that stuff from being abused by upper management to the glass ceiling. it was a rough work enviroment. they did build a fitness facility in the building to encourage us to work off all that candy we ate all day.

now i work for another world renowned company, and we have more of the other goodies everywhere, recently we had 3 birthdays in one week. why not combine them to one party, because why do that when you can have 3 days of treats? the worst part is, in the area i work they set up the party right outside my desk. i smell brownies, cakes, and candy all day......... it's torture too. at least it's a good place to work!

"food day"

wow PP that is INSANE!

I had a similar experience at a food company McCain - no samples but it was like "food day" every day - totally insane - each person would bring in enough treats weekly for everyone and there was literally always piles of crackers, chips cookies, donuts, pies, cakes, brownies, etc...
I mean I couldn't even beleive it ! There was a window sill running along the whole north wall that was packed and some unused cubicle too...
I gained 20 pounds in a few months of working there plus there was no gym

now I work at a place with no "food days" just the ocasional pot-luck or treats from vendors / employees... plus there is a gym in the basement so I do crazy cardio at lunch every day and eat only my food from home...now I weigh less than I did in high school !

I think there should be an award for the worst office food environment of all time ;)

I also work for a chocolate company.
There are almost weekly give aways of excess product
On top of buckets of chocolate straight from the production line
On top of monthly departmental breakfasts loaded with muffins, bagels, pastries
The birthday cakes....
Food Food Food.....
I have honestly lost interest in the chocolate here, thank goodness!

my work place USED to sabotoge any healthy living style -- i managed a mcdonalds. they don't allow managers to take long enough breaks to enjoy something good and healthy. i tried to stick to the salads sans the dressing for a while which was great, but the job itself demands that i don't have time to eat the good things, so i'ld always cut back to quick cheeseburgers.

i now work at a place that has wraps, subs, and rice boxes. unfortunately we don't have brown rice but i use more veggies. the job itself does not sabotoge my diet in fact all of the food is fresh veggies, fresh chicken (mostly breasts but it's a mix of breasts and thighs)... waht sabotoges it is my cravings for food :(

Used to work in a pediatric dental practice where more than half the staff was obese. The "break room" always had a fresh pan of homemade cookies or a box of donuts. People would announce the arrival of food.

To get real about eating I established a rule....if I didn't bring it, i wouldn't eat it. Everyone knew my rule so they gave up tempting me after a while. I dropped a ton of weight after I started to follow my own rule. It was that simple.

Have to add this....sometimes I had small planned sweets, but because I BROUGHT them in with my lunch, I was fine. Usually, I left work a lunch time to stretch my legs and get some walking in. It broke up my day and gave me a fresh outlook. Also, I wasn't eating with people who had disordered eating patterns.

i work for DD delivering at night. and quite honestly after seeing all those donuts all night. im not interested in having any. i get sick of the site of them all the time so ressiting temptation is easy. plus i agree witht he popster that said every time you want something think of al the germs that ar on it. i have certain foods that i wont eat now because. when i was in school we did an experiment and put those foods under a high powered miroscope and saw all the germs and microscopic bugs on it. uggghhhhhh

My workplace doesn't sabotage my diet. I do.

Until you take responsibility for being the one who's actually eating the food, you are just going to keep failing.

"it's not my fault- I HAD to eat a cookie!" BS. You WANTED a cookie and didn't have the willpower to resist.

sorry PP but I disagree
some workplaces are really fraught with diet landmines that make it really nearly impossible to be good, I know it is really about your own choice and your hand puts the food in your mouth, but I have sympathy for people who work in offices that are filled with tons of donut bringin' stress eaters - it is killer
I have worked in all types of places one of which was a food packed cubicle village - really way tougher than where I work now to be good.

There are a few girls in my office who like to bring baked goods, but since starting my diet I have had about three-coworkers join me on my weightloss venture. We all say no together. It's like real life PT, and it's wonderful.

I think having accountability at the office is what keeps my hands out of the donuts.

This "business" of being SABOTAGED at your "place of business"

Yeah, this deal with being sabotaged by every "well meaning" person in the office who comes into possession of extra cookies, cakes, chocolates, etc. make me infuriated. This "well meaning" person, by the way, isn't so much thinking about you but about themselves instead. They want to get it out of their sight and mind, so they throw it over your way and see if they can get "rid" of the temptation before they succumb to it themselves.

Now, here's the remedy: Go into the kitchen (or wherever the sweet gratuity is placed), kindly pick it up off the table, walk a few steps, and proceed to toss it in the "hard" file, a/k/a the trash can. Now, see what you've done? You have made the "executive" decision to do everybody the biggest favor, and that is GET RID OF IT!!!!! On another note, it gives you the most POWERFUL feeling when you do that. Try it next time and see!

NO my workplace doesnt not.. the food is there , but its my choice to eat it.. so I follow becks card walk away no choice.. I also have a few people watching my logs that keep on me about what I do.. that helps

but ultimately the choices on this journey is mine and I am so close to being where I want to be.. 34 pounds from goal... the JUNK isnt worth it.

sure I have a bit of something now and than. I indulge, but not on a daily basis. my body doesnt crave those foods anymore.

like today for example I went to lunch.. my bro got a dessert.. di it look good sure.. white choc macadamien cookie with vanilla bean ice cream.. did I take a bit.. no it wasnt planned for.. besides I have a good quality piece of dark choc at home if I wanted something so I walked away and said no.. well actually I sat at the table and sipped my lemon water which was my drink choice... I do the same thing at wor.. sure there is candy and they order in pizza and what not.. I bring fruit, fresh veg with hummus, oat muffins.. and a piece of dark choc.. thats always in my plan..

doing this has allowed me to release 190 pounds and to be 34 pounds from goal... nothing taste as good as being healthy and thin feels and that what I live by.
