Are you all getting ready for church tomorrow morning?

Has it been a long time since you visited a church? Maybe someone might get brave and go to a new one or your old one again tomorrow. I love when I see someone that has been absent for a long time, come back and give it another try. No one needs to tell me off for saying this...because the someone that I mention in the second sentence knows who they are..if it's not you...don't worry about it.

I felt a little desire to try a church across town. It's crossed my mind a few times. Then I opened this board..and read your question. I think I am going.

9:20 - If you don't like the question, why do you feel the need to jump into the conversation? What is it that makes it impossible for you to let people who think church is important talk about it? I'm not trying to be combative here --- just really, honestly wondering.

Sorry, what I meant was that CHristians HAVE NOT been persecuted as much as other religions.

I was being sarcastic, which was not clear or appropriate.

And I have the all about the the Third Reich, have visited 2 concentration camps in Europe and been to Israel, so I would NEVER suggest that Jews have not been extremely persecuted in history.

Christians and Jews

We are part of the same family. The Messianic movement is increasing very quickly these days. Look into it if you don't believe it. Modern Jews who have decided to accept Jesus as thier awaited Messiah join the legions of Jews that historically accepted that Jesus was the king that was heralded in the Book of Isaiah. God sent Jesus to the Jews after all. This is a very important issue. Christians are beginning to experience the same brand of persecution as the Jews have suffered. Generally, Islam see us two parts of one faith, which we are.

11:53 poster - This interests me. Are you Jewish? Just wondering if this is an inside perspective. Is there a particular name for the group that accepts Jesus or is it just known as the Messianic movement? And is this a big thing in Israel, if you know?

Um, if they're born a Jew and then convert, they're still a Jew.

I find it fascinating that Jews who follow Messianic Judism are shunned, while other prominent Jews such as Gene Simmons who do everything he can to go against everything Judism stands for are turned a blind eye.

meaning, I assume , "you won't learn anything here and "we" are not inerested in learning more about Islam" ...

I had posted the "find a mosque in your area". I did not mean that you wouldn't find information here, only that you would likely find the most reliable information about Islam at their place of worship.

I was not raised in the church I currently belong to, but when I investigated switching denominations, I went to the church that I was interested in to find out about their theology and practices so that I could learn directly from that church. I did ask the opinions of the church members and took that into accout when I made my decision to switch, however, it was the beliefs of the church and their philosophy about my children's Christian education that weighed the most heavily in my decision. I think it's easier to go to the source, get the facts and decide for yourself. I didn't intend to offend - I apologize if I did.

To clarify, I am not the poster who asked about Islmam, but, wanting to learn more about any religion does not or should not imply that one is looking to switch religions. Perhaps that assumption is why there is so much animosity in these threads? I simply enjoy learning and understanding why others think and feel the way they do, and I want to actually know what they think and believe. To me, that brings enlightenment - which has nothing to do with my religion, but an awful lot to do with my character.

I don't know haw to put in a good link but try this on info on Islam www.johnankerberg.com/Articles/apologetics/AP0700W2.htm
This is a website that is extremely dependable for accurate information. He is on Daystar Network. Learning is great. Moslems will have more and more effect on our daily lives as time goes on, it's good to know where they are coming from.

To clarify my comment, I didn't assume that the poster who wanted to learn more about Islam wanted to switch religions. I just used my own experience as a point of reference for how I gathered information. If I wanted to learn more about Catholicism but not convert, as I am not Catholic, I would go to that type of church and find things out. I don't think that asking my Lutheran pastor would give me the most accurate information, as he is most familiar with Lutheran theology and not as well-learned on Catholicism.

To 6:52 am on Hebrew Christians

I am what you call a "Hebrewphile", (a lover of the jews) I am a Christian, but I cannot understand my faith, without feeling it's Jewish roots. My master and Lord is of the Jewish nation.
The numbers of Messianic Jews is growing incredibly worldwide..and yes in Israel also, Russia, South America and North America. There is a magazine called Jewish Voice that I like..and a tv show. I attempted to add the link, otherwise plug in Jewish Voice and I am sure you can find it. The Word of God says that the gospel was "for the jew first". That's pretty clear. Are you Jewish? If you tell me where you are I can see if I can locate a congregation for you if you are interested. That website is hugely informative. Thanks for asking =)

8:53 Thanks for the info. I am not Jewish, but it seems you and I have similar beliefs with regard to the Jewish roots of Christianity. I was just interested because I have been studying a bit about the Jews through history, and their beliefs, the evolution of their religious practices -- I find it all fascinating. (Kind of funny, since I hated History back in High School!) Thanks again.

Note: I recognize that this is a very general statement, and may not be true to all people; I am not trying to start a debate, just trying to give a viewpoint.

Traditional Jews (those who do not see Jesus as the Messiah) tend to see Messianic Jews in a very offensive light. We feel that they are trying to "convert" us from our religion, which is a huge offense to a Jew, as with all of the historical persecution, that is what our ancestors were forced to do - change their religion or die (or hide their religion very well). We see Messianic Jews much like the "Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" - a group trying to recruit you. Both groups/religions have similar tactics (yes, not every member of each religion will do this, but some do) of going door-to-door in neighborhoods, trying to pass out brochures and get you to join their religion. Really, I will never support any religion where members of it, in an organized manner, go door-to-door looking to convert people! I find that hugely offensive!

Messiah

To 10:42 As a Jew, how do you reconcile that the word of God tells the Jewish nation to wait and watch for the coming of thier Messiah or savior? Are you watching? How do you feel about it? I understand that you feel invaded by people that think that they have that information for you, trying to reach you, but what do you expect from your savior and how do you expect to hear about him when he does come? Just curious.

I'm not sure what I expect of the messiah, but I believe that when he comes, he will fix what is wrong with the world, the first time he comes. If he's so all-powerful, then why would he need to come back again before he can fix things?

2007 years after Jesus Christ was born, I think we have the perspective to be able to look back in history and say that he did not fix all that is wrong with the world, or even a small part of what is wrong with the world; thus I feel fairly certain that, by definition of the Messiah, Jesus was not him.

I understand that some people believe differently, and that's fine; I just do not want them showing up on my doorstep with brochures.

To ask another question - why do people think that they can change someone's beliefs with a few brochures anyway? Particularly when most of those brochures, at the end, ask for money!

This has turned into a really interesting thread. I like that people are sharing their beliefs without getting argumentative or defensive. It seems like internet communities offer such a great opportunity for dialogue between people who would never cross paths otherwise. It always saddens me when the dialogue on PT becomes nasty.

It must be because fat people are angry ...

Jews do not seek out converts and so it is very difficult to understand the "recruitment" of a religion. Also, unlike other religions, there is a Jewish culture; a history of language, music, literature, theatre, food, etc, that is not seen in other religions. Therefore it is possible to be culturally a Jew but not religious. Most Jews in Israel are secualr Jews and that has led to alot of social strife in that country as the secular and religious Jews clash over things from the military to women allowed on buses.

As for the coming of the Messiah; Jews are mostly concerned with this life and there isn't much thought about the afterlife. They most certainly believe in G-d and an afterlife but most of the teachings are about leading a good life here. I'm attaching a link that may be helpful.

To the 3:18 Poster
I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I can tell you that the reason our missionaries go door to door is because we truly believe that we have something of value – something that is so good that it would bring joy into the lives of every person on earth, IF they would allow it to. In today’s world, if you had something that you believed could bring peace, harmony, and joy to the world….wouldn’t you want to share it? And just for information’s sake, I don’t know of a single one of our brochures that asks for money.

for instance, the muslim and hindu religions are strongly interwoven into their cultures and many people practice their ways of living without adopting the worship associated with either faith.

Keeping up with the Jones's

There was a day when you did what your nieghbors did. All your nieghbors went to work, school and church. Now we don't know what our nieghbors are doing..but we have to work to live and we have to go to school by law but we have let church and faith become optional/translated as not needed. I believe that God is our Father and that we need relationship with Him. The word "religion" is usually said with disdain, but I love that word because I am a linguist and I know the root of that word is "religare" which means reconnect..like the word ligament, that ties things together and secures them..the reconnect is between God and man.

so we have, as a society, evolved into thinking for ourselves and not just following the majority like sheep in a herd. i see nothing wrong with evolution. as an aside, did you know that the word "yada" has its origins in ancient hebrew and translates as "to know", which in the biblical sense of the word means to copulate? no wonder it's gained such popularity in contemporary culture as a euphemism.

Weekend Inspiration

Body, Soul, and Spirit

Some psychiatrists view humans as purely chemical or organic beings whose mental state is created by or dramatically influenced by chemical reactions. Therefore, in their view, every mental malady we face can be isolated to chemical imbalances and "fixed with a pill." That Godless way of thinking is demeaning and narrow-minded at best. The Scriptures warn:
"The fool says in his heart, 'There is no God.'…The Lord looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God." (Psalm 14:1–2,)

God made you a complex, integrated being. Even alternative and holistic health practitioners make the same error as conventional physicians — they try to fix one system or function instead of addressing the whole person: spirit, soul, and body.

the words you quote from some novel that may or may not have been translated correctly only have meaning to others who believe that the novel is some sort of sacred scripture. if i quoted from Scientific American, would you be persuaded to change your veiw about your religion? if i sent you a copy of The God Delusion, would you read it and even think for one second that you have been wrong about your assumptions regarding your belief/worship in god? and just for the record, god did not "make" me, i evolved.
